One option in the stem splitter dialog box is "preserve wav files"

If I select this, I notice that wav files of the splits are placed in the folder that holds the project.

If I do NOT select this, will BIAB not save any stem files, and thus when I close the program, all the stems will be lost and I would have to regenerate stems next time I open the song?

"Preserve WAV files" means that duplicates of the stem files will be saved wherever the original source audio file was opened from. Not selecting that means that stems will only be loaded into BB. After that point you would need to save your song in BB to have those tracks saved with your SGU/MGU file - if you don't save, then these are lost.

I Simon. Hi found this to be very confusing and I ran several tests of different sorts. No matter what I did, if I did click save when closing BB, there always were stem wav files in my folder with the original track whether I had ticked the preserve wav files or did not. Also with all of these tests, the naming of said wav files were simply numbered. Sometimes when I was doing a split the names actually had the name of the instrument listed as in bass, vocal....

So for the life of me I cannot figure out what the best work flow is for simply bringing an audio song track into BB, splitting it and then having all the splits saved in my folder with proper names indicating the instrument of the split file. There seems to be way too many options that do not seem to make a difference when I am trying them all out. The complexity has me baffled.

Can you give me the one best way to achieve my goal?

When you save your song in Band-in-a-Box, the wav's file name will be based on which track it resides on in BIAB - if the bass track is on Utility 1, then the wav file will be named "Your song #1". These file names cannot be changed, either during saving or after. Selecting "Preserve WAV files" will not change any of this behaviour, it will simply keep the WAV files that were imported into BB, named as below.

If you're looking to simply split files without importing them into BIAB, just make sure that all 5 stems checkboxes are checked, and Preserve WAV files. This will name the tracks "File name" followed by Bass, Drums, Other, Vocals, or Residual. Again, these file names cannot be changed.
