by accident i came across an advantage of the latest mac m4 mini.
i have been forced to look carefully now to consider emissions eg emf in any electronics i get as it seems as i age im becoming more affected by emissions.

for example my wife and i got a new vid player which it seems affects me.
it seems to apples credit that the new m4 mac mini has lowered its carbon footprint and emissions if one googles.

eg....
https://gagadget.com/en/523739-m4-mac-mini-apples-first-carbon-neutral-computer/

there are some good sites on the net that discuss emissions on a range of electronics.
thus i suggest if you feel you might be susceptible to emissions/emf that you research carefully any potential purchase.

all credit to apple though...more details from apple...

https://www.apple.com/environment/pdf/products/desktops/Mac_mini_PER_Oct2024.pdf

maybe this might help someone.
im left wondering how m4 emissions compare with other apple products.
in closing i got a cheap emissions tester...very usefull called...'RDINSCOS'.
its really opened my eyes.

Here are ways to avoid radiation from computers:

Keep your distance
Use wired devices
Turn off Wi-Fi
Don’t put your laptop on your lap
Spend some time away from your device
Surround yourself with plants
Fit a Faraday cage around your computer - Pop a cake or biscuit tin over the unit.
Completely unplug devices when not in use
Keep computers out of your bedroom
AND some thing like this...

Ray.

good list.
i'm aware of it haveing done a lot of emissions research
to protect my family as we age.
but its a great list to detail for anyone lurking on these forums.

the bake tin is cute.

frankly i dont use laptops for obvious reasons.
i now use mini pc's which i'm very happy with and i can put them ways away from me.
i have one for the net cost only 140 bucks/fanless and has surprised me what it can do. but obviously not capable of my production mini pc's over 300 track capability as reported by rb.
but could scratch out a rough song idea on the net mini pc.

as i said both have surprised me and cost together under 600 bucks.

my big prob is i have to find a good pc monitor with low emissions compared to what i have. yes ive used a emissions filter.

maybe someone can confirm this but it seems that the latest mac mini m4 has lower emissions than some other apple computers ?

happiness.

Why is this here and not in Off Topic or Help Tech S.O.S since it has nothing to do with Recording, Mixing, Performance and Production?

To be clear, had this machine existed when I bought my M2 Studio Ultra, I would have saved myself a couple grand and bought one.

Had you thought of installing one of these Faraday Cage gadgets? They sure seem to work in reducing the effects of emissions wink

We could talk about my 1961 Jaguar Mk II but, like EMF, it has nothing to do with Recording, Mixing, Performance and Production.

Rayc.

thanks for the info.
-------------------------------
the thing that bugs me about the wonderfull mini m4 is one is limited as to the amount of ram...which makes me wonder how do apple users with big plugin counts in a song that consume oodles of ram address this ? ive been struggling to find info on benchmarks.

it will be interesting to see what apple announce in the fall.
i would love to see more flexibility re the mini.
but tbh i still love my ryzen mini pc and no complaints.

happiness.

I use an external SSD for my alot of my stuff. However there are now upgrade kits available from third party's that let you install 2 tb for a fraction of the cost of Apple. Do a search on YT for mac mini upgrade kits.

If, as you say, your issue is with the monitor, why all the blather about the computer?
The science, aside from the plethora of sites labelled EMFdoomconspiracy, suggests very few people suffer from problems with computer based EMF, that the actual problem hasn't enough scientific data to be verified and that there are a few ways of managing possible symptoms, (modern gear, good grounding, blue light filter software, time away from the unit etc.), if it exists.
Video player? Put a lid over it/tin foil/distance/human shield.
Overall, talk to your doctor or an EMF specialist, who isn't a conspiracy theorist, about your symptoms and your anecdotal, potential causal relationship pbservations.

RAM isn’t the issue you think it is as far as plug-ins go. One can have an audio project with 300 instances of VIs and 2–4 plug-ins per track and do just fine on 32GB.

AV, any graphics usage, browsers and especially AI are memory intensive. That the M3 Studio Ultra now offers up to 512GB RAM is entirely due to AI. My M2 Studio Ultra is maxed out at 192GB—I can crunch huge graphics files but a 3 minute AI rendering task sends me out to lunch with the hopes that the file is done when I get back.

Free RAM is important—memory leaks incl. plug-ins, open apps and browser pages can consume most of 32GB in a hurry. Virtual Memory is no substitute as Apple found out when they built the G4. Rebooting is the only thing that completely clears the RAM cache——about once a week for me but daily when I had only 32GB.

I have external TB4 boot drives for testing. When booted from an external, there is a notable speed difference. Also, one cannot install a Recovery Partition on an external and other considerations. Thunderbolt 5 is about double the speed of TB4.

iFixIt.com M4 Mini repair and upgrades page iFixIt.com is where to go for info on those Mini M4 upgrades.

Those internal upgrade kits for the Studio from France are pretty good. Availability is off and on as Apple keeps trying to shut them down.

Studio Storage Upgrades

There are some big differences between the Mini M4 and M4 Pro. The M4 is available up to 32GB RAM and has TB4 ports. The Mini M4 Pro is available up to 64GB RAM and has TB5 ports.

Now about the differences between my Jag MK II and the green one used in the last Indiana Jones movie…
