It's time for me to pay SoundCloud. I was wondering if there's something better now?

Thanks,

Billy

Why do you feel you have to pay for this free service? The only thing I can think is you are running out of space. That would be the only reason I would consider to..

Storage space?

Does that imply you don’t want or care if folks listen to your tunes?

There are other considerations. It all depends. Soundcloud plans and pricing

Now that the ELUA makes you agree that your content can be use to train AI, I will be cancelling my Artist Pro subscription and removing my content except for my Christmas pieces that are in the PD. Those can stay with the free Basic.

Hi Bud

LOL...No... No, but I find it interesting to listen to things I did 13 years ago and posted to Soundcloud.
Secondly, I don't want to listen to all their ads.
That is worth the $100 a year.
I would like to know if there is something better for the future.
The YouTube ads irritate me, too.
So does the deluge of useless email, along with the incessant updating of my iPhone and Windows 11.
As this has turned into a minor rant, I might as well complain about the stupid things the government does, local, county, and national...lol

Cheers,

Billy

Hi Dan
I don't think I'll run out of space anytime soon, but I am getting close.
The main reason is to get rid of the ads.

re soundcloud.

ive tried various of these sites over the years...and found for an artist who would like wider exposure of their songs it can be a challenge to achieve that.

what ive concluded from my marketing background in a previous life is...
'the mass of normal new music consumers' out there dont seem to be going to these sites often.
in my travels talking to these folks and asking why...the response often
is not enough time/too busy with other things etc etc or just normal human ennui.
thus ive concluded that IF one really wants to attract a wider audience one must do lots of marketing to what i call 'gatekeepers'...
eg radio and tv stations//the media as examples.
its not easy and tons of work.

just my opinion.

As always, a lovely voice, Janice. I guess we all are compelled to use the damn phones. It is the most intrusive device we have ever invented.

For me, Soundcloud is just a place to store music. Soundcloud provides a place to exchange ideas with other musicians worldwide.

The chance of someone discovering something on SoundCloud and purchasing it is remote at best.

An independent artist trying to compete with the commercial music industry is about as easy as winning the lottery.

I’ve used SoundCloud a bit, and while it’s still a decent option for sharing and streaming, I wouldn’t call it the best current storage place. It feels more like a social platform than a reliable archive, kind of like how cnn is more about broadcasting than long-term keeping of information. If you want stability, cloud drives like Google Workspace or Dropbox are much better for actual storage and backup. For musicians who also want exposure, SoundCloud works fine, but I’d still pair it with a proper storage solution.

Man there's a bunch of free options.

I started using BOX.COM because, it's free... up to 10G of storage. That's a lot of songs. You can select the exact song you want to share.... it's set up so you can listen only, allow DLs, and even allow other to have access to the folder so you can collaborate, all in the same place.

Soundclick and soundcloud are not set up to stop at the end of the song...... they will go to the next song and continue to play..... I asked if this was able to be shut off, and they said sorry, we no can help. And....Soundcloud at least, is one that has a new user agreement that gives them the rights to use your music to train AI without remuneration to you. Not cool.

Also DropBox, and if you have a Prime membership, they also have date storage included..... while it could be argued, that's not exactly free.... it is, nonetheless, storage. There's probably a bunch of other lesser knowns as well.

^^ THIS!!
Get a website/hosting package, learn how to use it, and it's much cheaper
Even if you just use the storage

Bandcamp

For the reasons already posted, I moved from SoundCloud to Bandcamp. I much prefer the way they do business.

Some good ideas have already been suggested, but I'd like to offer that they are complementary. If you are interested in selling your music, you need a partner like Bandcamp that deals with all of the storefront issues, but you also need to direct customers to that partner and not expect them to do all of the marketing for you. So, I agree: get a website that you can point interested people to via the different social media channels. There are a lot of different things you can use it for: song samples, who you are, gig dates, times and locations, but use something like Bandcamp for sales. Account management and money transactions add a ton of complexity to a personal website.

Wordpress & Woocommerce
NOPComerce

etc.
There are many free solutions when combined with Paypal for payments on a website ..
the transaction side is the least of your worries IMHO

I respectfully disagree. Wordpress and Woocommerce may be free, but integrating them into a storefront that does and looks like what you want is a freaking nightmare that even some professional website developers I know struggle with. Someone new to website design will fail miserably. I know. I did. I wasted several years trying. Instead of paying a professional thousands of dollars to help me, I just abandoned the project. There are other, better options available, but they're not free.

As I started this thread a good while back, this is what actually happened. I paid Soundcloud whatever it cost. Not because it may be the best place, but because it is convenient.

I get to go back and listen to songs I wrote and recorded fifteen years ago. If they had been on my computer systems for that long, some of them would have been lost due to computer failures.

$100 is the new $10 bill. Decisions to spend those amounts of money don't change my life. Soundcloud is useful, so I put up with their BS.

Have you thought about CD ROMs, Thumb Drives or SD Cards?
If volume is an issue an external 20 TB SSD can store over 300,000 songs assuming 5-minute, CD-quality stereo songs.
Just store it in a fireproof/waterproof safe.
If you are really prolific buy two smile

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.
