Maybe you knew someone like this in 8th or 9th grade: a kinda likeable kid who made strange sounds, but was both weird and funny. Tommy Bosco was that kid for me, and this song is about a kid like him. But, I found in my HS yearbook that another kid--really a great, smart guy--signed his name as "The Gunky"--why, I have no idea! But that strange moniker always stuck with me, and I combined that name with the memory of that strange little weird guy. ======================= The Gunky If you see me comin' you skidaddle; You go flying up a creek without a paddle; 'Cause my daily itch is to make you sick-- And if you hang around, I can do my schtick. I know when I show up you wanna scatter; Tell the truth it really doesn't matter; You folks just wish I'da disappeared; But I'm not nasty, just really weird! Crazy like a dodo but sweet like a donkey; Look like a hobo and I smell kinda funky; Grin like a troll and cackle like a monkey; I'm The Gunky...The Gunky! The only time you want me near is 'never'; But I know you think I really kinda clever; Things I do make you wanna smile; You find my creepy but you dig my style. Wacky to the knees and wired as a junky; Kooky as a banshee, but smarter than a flunky; You want me as a friend, but you find me kinda skunky; I'm The Gunky...The Gunky!================================= _B3THREE.STY. Tom, loved those backing tracks. Outstanding vocal. Great arrangement Super mix A weird song but I loved it.
Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Hey Tom! One thing I’ve learned in my limited time on the forum is the variety you provide. This song gave me the image of a person that for most part is ‘mainstream’ (verses) then has an episode (choruses). Did you record the animal-like noises in the background? If so, I would have loved to be present in a nearby room and hearing the recording process! Loved it! While the vocal first appeared louder in the mix, it gave me the impression of a person standing close to me filling me in with running commentary of what was unfolding in the background. Task accomplished! Andrew D

Such a cool song, Tom. Love the opening walking bass and the jazz trio in general. Very inventive theme and translation to an entertaining listen. Your vocals are really nice, and fit the song perfectly. Am not crazy about the vocal FX on this one, as it sounds a bit buzzy, and a more classic treatment would seem to fit the material better. But it wouldn't make the song better if you changed it. Great job!

Mario/Andrew/Bob/Ron...thanks for being willing to visit the "wierd" side of me...I had to get this out and hoped that it would further muddy my reputation on the forum...and, as always, thanks for the mix tips.

The drums in the chorus took me my surprise and I had to wait a couple of bars to confirm it wasn't an error. They're probably a little to quiet for their unsettling potential. Kinda like a Tom Waits B side with a sketchy beatnik jazz groove...cool.

Thanks Ray and Arri...regarding the drums, not real sure how to get BIAB to "solo" drums like this--or maybe there's a better tool. Thanks for listening.

Wacky to the knees and wired as a junky; Kooky as a banshee, but smarter than a flunky; You want me as a friend, but you find me kinda skunky; I'm The Gunky...The Gunky! Man, is that ever different in the clever write and overall production. But it’s a “good different.” Nicely sung along with fine BiaB session folks. That upright is great with a tone that perfectly cuts through. You do any special processing on it? Great organ solo … kinda funky Enjoyed it! J&B

LOL, that photo! Ya know, bass is my favorite instrument so great intro and rather interesting changing landscape musically speaking. It's sort of a children's song, but really for adults. I don't dislike it but I don't quite know what to make of it...which is probably about right.

Hi, Tom. Fun write! Definitely some Tom Waits vibes with the arrangement. Some clever and fun things happening as well. Very cool!

J&B/Floyd/Beth/David/Dan..thanks for the feedback, and glad you enjoyed it. I really wasn't thinking "beatnik", but I guess that fits. BIAB is super at this type of style!! J&B--no special effects on the bass, just delivered 'fresh' from RT bank.

Really great theme and lyrics. Love the instrumentation which so well reflects the gunky weirdness.

Fun, creative and ... weird Clever use of the BIAB instruments and the chord progression is a perfect combination. The bass intro and the organ solo fit the weirdness like a hat on a donkey. Very inspirational, Borge meets Zappa, those strange voices are pure fun. Your lyrical and rhythmic skills are exceptional on this forum. Janne
