Leon, Rustle Up Some Grub on Soundcloud
Leon, Rustle Up Some Grub on YouTube

A song about a bongo-loving cook in the town's best greasy spoon who'd rather jam to the beat than make the patrons happy.  My first home-studio in the early 70s consisted of a sound-on-sound real-to real with 2 channels a various speeds. I had a bass, an acoustic, a flute and for percussion I used pots 'n' pans. (I'd slow down the track to record the acoustic for solos, so when played back at regular speed it sounded like a mandolin.) For this one I resurrected the pot'n'pans for the choruses and borrowed bongos from “Zydecoal" Bill Davis for the Bridge and fade. Forgive me.

Style is _PULSE.STY (Pulse Soulful Rock Piano)

RealTracks in style: 4288:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm BritRockSoulfulKevin Ev16 095
RealTracks in style: 3351:Guitar, Baritone Electric, Rhythm SwampyBluesBrent Ev 095
RealTracks in style: 3245:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm FunkyBluesSol ev16 090
EZDDrummer.
And I played bass, sang and played pots 'n' pans and bongos. Instead of having Bill or my son Matthew play the bongos, I told them I wanted it to be not so good. Bill said I nailed that.

Leon, Rustle Up Some Grub

Leon's in the kitchen and he playing pots and pans.
He's grooving to the rhythm of the beat with soapy hands.
The waitress at the window is pounding on the bell.
She's screaming for attention, but he's too gone to tell.

"Leon get some grits on. These peoples gotta eat.
Get back to flippin' burgers. My tips are gettin' cheap.
Get that kitchen hoping. This ain't no dancin' club.
Stop the music, Leon. Rustle up some grub."

Leon couldn't hear her with his headphones on his ears.
Another waitress called out, "Get me three more beers."
He just loved those kitchen bongos, and his jamming to the beat. The patrons all a'clamorin', "Hey, we gotta eat!"

BR- He kept right on drummin' cuz the kitchen door was locked. He just poured his heart out through his hands.
No matter how much screamin' he knew he couldn't stop.
He thought they were his screamin' fans.

Leon placed his bongos on the shelf next to the stove.
His hands kept right on moving to the beat those bongos wove.
So many stacks of pancakes and burgers piled neat.
He set his bongo table cuz Leon had to eat.

Marty!
If Leon played like this, the local greasy spoon would’ve been the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights! Those waitresses should’ve been more understanding ‘cos Leon’s rhythm was bringin’ ‘em in!

A most enjoyable and fun song, Marty! You can serve up more like this any day!

Marty,

Wow! This is absolutely great. It sounds like a long-lost track from one of The Band's early albums. You even sound like you're channeling a bit of Levon.

Loved this - a new favorite!

Hey, I see what you did here. Genius level stuff! Fun sounds that SOUND great. GREAT vocals, even the screaming. Nice, bouncy bass, and those bongos are MUCH better than I could play.

Stop the music, Marty, and take a bow. Nicely done.

Marty, you are a great scene-painter with your songs!! You’ve given us a vivid snapshot of the weirdness in your mind, all along creating a solid piece of music..listening to your work always puts a smile on my face, probably the exact result that you want from your listener! Enjoyed it all the way around!

Marty, that was extremely clever and brilliant.
Super vocal, lyrics, video, and mix.
At least you had a white haired and white bearded pianist wink (you know what I mean)
Loved it

Lyrically very creative. Another Marty hit! Really love the piano throughout this.

Marty...another brilliant write...great title (hook)...you're the "punniest" writer I've ever heard...your vocal reminded me of Roger Miller also a very clever writer...I love the piano part...the breaks...never met anyone who could write great music from the situational stories that are roaming around in your noggin...they're never boring , sometimes weird and always entertaining!

Thanks, Beth. I'm with ya on the poor Leon part. A lot of musicians need to work part-time in kitchens. smile

You're right, Andrew. I could run the dishwasher and play bass. The waitresses argued that they bring in more than Leon ever could. They could've at least shared tips with him. Thanks!

Thanks, Bob. Good nod to Levon, too. Yeah, this was from before they bought all that pink paint.

Thanks, Ron. The bongo playing sucked, but I dig the pots 'n' pans in the choruses. My hands hurt like hell after just one take. Not sure where that Leon Russell thing came from, but maybe I started off by asking BiaB for something by him.

Great rhythmic piece, the piano reminds me of Elton John's rockers, but although not Taupin's, the lyrics are a perfect example of Marty's buoyantly bubbly imagination smile I always wonder from where your wild ideas come. The song title perfectly describes the mood in the rhythm of the words.

What a splendid arrangement, bongos and cheers are clever additions! Your vocals really shine here. A song that makes me smile and makes me want to get out the spoons and pans and start jamming along smile

Hi, Marty.

Nice! The pianist really earns his pay.

You're a fun vocalist to listen to - expressive and digging into the lyrics.

There's a reason the word "entertaining" keeps popping up in these comments, and I echo them whole-heartedly. smile

Sorry Marty.
I've listened twice before now & had thought I'd commented at the 2nd listen...well third time is the charm...
COOL song, each new pun for the laugh but they don't diminish the song or narrative at all.
The song is a tightrope for a mad dog accompanying Englishmen. Salisbury steak anyone?
The piano solo is REALLY cool...love those chiming chords.
" & Bongo Drums a specialty" sang the late Joe Strummer.
LOVE the vocals, bass and arrangement.
Enjoyed the story and the overall sound.
Aced it!

Cheers

Thanks, Mario. Yeah, of course Ai balked at me requesting images of Leon Russell, but finally came up with a couple good hints.

Thanks, Chay. Marty hits are when there are more than 20 listeners. BiaB has some excellent pianos --as YOU know.

Nice honky-tonk tune, Marty! Sounds like a fun place to hang out on Saturday night, if you can get some food ;-)

I enjoyed your singing, bass, pots 'n' pans and bongos, and the BIAB piano.

Keep doing what you're doing, love it!

We can see Leon Russell killing on that piano! smile

Your imagination serves up some delightful productions, Marty.
And we can tell that you’re having fun in your joyous vocals too.

The pots and pans reminded us of our nephew first learning to walk and having fun in our kitchen.
He'd pull out the pots and pans from the cabinets to play a song for us. smile

Cool bass, vocals, bongos and pans. But where is the guitar case drum?

Super cool write and loving the last bit:
"Leon placed his bongos on the shelf next to the stove.
His hands kept right on moving to the beat those bongos wove.
So many stacks of pancakes and burgers piled neat.
He set his bongo table cuz Leon had to eat."

Big Time Fun!

Very clever. I like the play on words in the title.

This immediately reminded me of Rod Stewart on Stay with Me.... And then a brief glimpse of some Beatles vocals a bit further along.

That's sure enough a jukin piano player. I really like that track and I'll have to remember it if I get lazy and decide I don't want to play the piano on one of my future songs.

I totally enjoyed this song.
