Hello,
I will have to play Chucho from Paquito D'rivera with some friends (not professional). I'm not a jazz specialist. I have BIAB 2010 UltraPlusPak + RealBand. I want to make a file for guitar training. What style is the most appropriated for this song?
And how BIAB + RealBand can help me to find the correct guitar line?
Thanks for your help.

the Latin Pianist which is available at PG Music is a valuable software program for learning Afro-Cuban Music. It includes "Chucho" as a song name "Mambo Mulato" which will get you going on this very hip tune and chord progression..hope this helps...

Thanks. But I still have no idea of the correct guitar lines! That's why I would prefer to use BIAB + RealBand. I can import the mp3 or the midi file and work from this base.
The question is what style to apply to this song in BIAB? I've tried many but I'm not really satisfied.
This music is very far from what I use to play (blues, Beatles, coutry-rock ... the seventies!).

Hi, FB. If I'm not mistaking, there's a style called latin jazz or something to that effect under ether "latin" or "jazz" styles which I think is pretty close to what Paquito, Chucho and the rest of them used to play when the whole group was together. I can look for it to be more precise and report back.

Thanks. But I'm looking for a style with realtracks and I have 169 jazz styles with RT!
If you find something more precise it will save me a lot of time!
After that, I will have to find how to play it with my guitar and it doesn't seems very easy (for me).

Ok, if you go to the style picker, under "Styles w/real tracks" there are several latin jazz styles, they are of different tempos and the limitation with real tracks is their stretching capabilities, in other words if you go beyond or under their recommended tempo by more or less 15-20 BPM they start to distort. I couldn't be more helpful because I'm not familiar with that particular song from Paquito (which I own several CD's of). As far as how to play it on the guitar, no help there, I'm not a guitar player, although do no feel bad about it, the nuances of latin music or Afro-Cuban one is a different ball game on any instrument if you want to make it sound right, (many non latin musicians find that to be the case). In any case, start by looking in the style I mentioned before, maybe since you're familiar with the song you might be able to find one with the right "feel".
Report back if you find anything I'll be curious to know how it went.
Good luck

Mike B.

Pete, Once you can input the chord progression or a midi file of the song into BIAB, select the guitar icon and this will bring up a guitar fretboard that allows you to turn the Tutor on.

In there you will see a box that you can check and this will further allow you to select the type of Jazz chords you may want to use on the study. (4 Part Advanced, 3 Part Chords, Walking Bass Jazz Chords, etc.) Once you start the song you will see the chords visually on the fretboard.

You can also use the Improviser within BIAB to create a solo which you can also study for the song. The great thing about BIAB is you can slow it down to a walking pace and loop the parts until you thoroughly learn them.

It works wonders for self study.

FB, I listened to the "Chucho" song and like I though, it's pretty much straight "salsa" with jazz overtones (which is very common of Paquito's ways). Go to the style group I mentioned earlier in this post and find the style that match the "feel" and the tempo of the song the closest. Now, all the Rt's you're going to get in most of them are: Base, Piano accompaniment and drums or latin percussion assemble. I'm not quite sure what part of it your friend wants you to play, but other that rhythmic backing on guitar (if any)I heard no other guitar part on it. But anyway, I hope this helps.
