Well, here goes nuttin'. This represents some experimentation. I started with a style for once and went from there. Simple chords. Lyrics came (I was feeling a bit fed up with the world and channeled that). Voila. Too far out there?? Actually, even if it is, I don't care. grin The 2nd half of the piece is instrumental...maybe too long, but I dunno. I kinda like it.

Fresh Air

Style is _OORT.STY (Oort Spacey Ambient Synth)

RealTracks in style: ~2579:Bass, Synth, RnBModernSub Ev16 065
RealTracks in style: 2666:Pedal Steel, Rhythm LushChordsSlow Ev 075
RealTracks in style: 3621:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm AmbientBalladArp Ev16 065
RealTracks in style: 2328:Shakuhachi, Synth, Background NewAge Ev 110
RealDrums in style:WorldPercKeitaSlow16ths: a: WorldPercKeitaSlow16thsb: WorldPercKeitaSlow16ths
I added RT 4381 Erhu and RT 4566 Guzheng.
There a worldArabian bass loop too.
Doubled main vocal with some distortion for the heck of it and some harmonies.

Lyrics:

Floating out into outer space
looking down on the human race
Feelings mixed with both
awe and hate
Wondering now
what's to be our fate

too tired to care
to weary to dare
I need fresh air

Don't know how we can come together
seeing as how we blame one another
the truth is it hurts in every bone
collective soul but crying alone

thank you for experimenting! I think it turned out quite nice. I really liked the sparse melody line and your doubled vocal sounded good as well.
So, cheer up--your tinkering produced something really nice!!

Hi Beth!
I think the music backing and singing really supports the lyrical concept in this song - the backing - especially the pedal steel that swells - and the meter of the lyrics - gives a floating sensation, and that the observer has plenty of time to consider what's going on below. 'Fresh air' is ironic, and I wonder if you intended it, given the singer is inside a space capsule reliant on good air filtering, but it's not the ship's air filters that is stifling the breathing. One can't get more objective than from outer space!

The instrumental and outro have a very oriental feel as a result of the instrument choices which sounds cool.
Looking forward to the YT video!
Andrew

Wow, this turned out nice, Beth! Expertly written and arranged, and I LOVE your vocal FX chain on this one. The ambient vibe of the first 2/3s transitioning to the extended instrumental outro is very cool, too. It all SOUNDS great as well.

I always start with a RealStyle and add/subtract from there. There are just too many great sounding pairings, and it's so easy to sort and audition them until you find the right(est) one. Like the one you started with here a lot, but in many, many years of using BiaB, I've never used it...

Appreciated, Ron! Thanks for the expressive caps. I enjoyed the process of working backwards from my usual workflow and will try it again now that I know.

Love the atmospheric instrumentation in this song, Beth, plus the effects you use on your vocals work really well. The use of erhu and guzheng was excellent. I've used both on some tracks, but I always wish I could literally tell the erhu player to vary things a bit. In this song the erhu works brilliantly without any orders given! laugh
What's to be our fate? I'm the worst person to ask as I'm an optessimist: I derive a very positive view of humanity's later future via a very pessimistic view of out present in which nonconsciousness aka ignorance rules in tandem with literal insanity. Just after I moved to this retirement flat in the Year of My SNAFU Catch 2022 I had a dream in which Asman was showing me down the road, which is a few minutes walk from the beach, and he said to me, "All of this will be gone by (or 'in') 2028." I'd never heard the name Asman before and so I looked it up and he's the Sky God (Logos) in Zoroastrianism. As this area is a major flood zone such could easily happen, and it did in 1953 due to "a huge storm surge which hit Holland, Belgium, England and Scotland. A total of 2,551 people died." A repeat of that is very likely, but that's actually a best case scenario re "All of this will be gone by 2028."

Some favourite Waoist Adages:
#1: Play on the Way.
#13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you.
#58: Bring consciousness to it.
#63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made.
#92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.

It's always good to try new things and I really like the result, especially the vocals are really beautiful.
To me, the pedal steel sounds a bit boring and “hollow”, I would probably replace it with an acoustic (finger-picked) guitar or so to make it a bit more interesting, but that's probably not what you wanted.
Enjoyed my listen anyway smile

Hi, Beth.

This turned out nice! smile

The use of ethnic instruments was inspired.

I see Andrew beat me to the "of course you need fresh air if you're in a space capsule" snarky response. laugh

Beth - your creative juices flowing here, everything gelled together
really well on this song! Like the lyrics, the gentle feel, the production
& mix, the choice of instruments! Experimentation - gorgeous!!
I share living in a broken marriage - your songs clearly prove
that you're riding above it.
May you continue to be inspired,

I loved this, both musically and lyrically. I'm really happy when users employ the Asian RTs, I hope to use them some day myself. Great job!

Thank you, Bob.

Thank you, Chay. Interesting dream, there. I guess time will reveal all.

Thank you, BD. I know what you're saying. I did try a couple of replacements on that RT and decided to stick with the original.

Thank you, David. grin I never even thought of a spacecraft when writing this. I was thinking more "astral travel".

Thank you, Carl.

Thank you, Rob.

Thanks, Mario!

Hey, that ain't nothin', kid. A good way to deal with the frustration and disappointment in the world is to make it smaller, AND listening to music like this. You may think you were showing how fed up it all is, but there is still a ton of hope in there. The long intrumental ending seemed so right, as if to let the words sink in and bring about a change. Yeah, I'll say inspirational, Beth.

Oh, starting with a style then writing around it is always a fun approach.

We’ve always liked “connect your own dots” lyrics and this is a good one indeed.

Nice band and the pedal steel works very well for the space sensation.

Excellent harmony … very effective.

We really like the feel from those RT’s as they expressed a transition.
One from the sterile outer space to the instrumental beauty of what we imagined as an oriental lush garden.

Excellent experiment all around.

Well for folks like us it takes a while to get to all the songs we want to thoughtfully review (get to the monitors, listen several times, carefully read the lyric and muse for a bit before writing). And to define “folks like us” we mean we spend most of our time enjoying outdoor activities. And lesser time producing songs and trying to keep up on the forum. 😀
