She Talked an Awful Lot About Texas

Just a simple country tune.

Based on a real person. One of her dreams came true but I ain't tellin'...

Lyrics: R.W. Davis
Music, vocals, production: Me
AI: None. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Style is _HAGPDS.STY (Swinging Country w/ Pedal Steel)
RealTracks in style: ~1136:Bass, Acoustic-Guitar, FolkSwing Sw 110
RealTracks in style: ~370:Pedal Steel, Background Hank Sw 120

RealTracks in style: ~372:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Hank Sw 120
RealDrums in style:NashvilleSwing8^5-a:Sidestick, HiHat , b:Snare, HiHat

SHE TALKED AN AWFUL LOT ABOUT TEXAS

She wants to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader
I know she’ll make it some day
I wish I could see her face once again
Georgia, I know we’ll find a way

She wants to sing in San Antonio
I’ll buy her records in the store
I thank the Lord for the year she was here
And for her memory even more

She talked an awful lot about Texas
She told about the cowboys living there
She longed to get back to old Texas
The Lone Star state is waiting for her there

She wants to own an oil company
She wants a rig out in the bay
I’ll stay here in the East for a while
But I’ve got to go to Texas some day

She talked an awful lot about Texas
She told about the cowboys living there
She longed to get back to old Texas
The Lone Star state is waiting for her there

Well Ron, that's my kinda country friend. Nice simple, laid back track, good lyrics and well sung. Harmonies were just right imo. Nice job, most enjoyable listen.

Hi Ron,

This is a terrific country song. I played in San Antonio almost every weekend back in the mid 70s. Lived there for almost 5 years.

It's a really nice arrangement with a good vocal. There's a little bit of "essing" on the vocal in spots, but it didn't distract from a nice listen.

The pedal steel in the BG music was simply perfect. Good work in all respects - but, that's what you typically do.

Best to you,

Alan

Hi Ron! While I’m not a country fan, you drew me in with this ooo and ahhh backing vocals, and if you’ve heard a few of my songs, you know I value them highly. This song has all the elements you’d expect from a good country song - campfire guitar, pedal steel, swing feel, a girl, Texas, and a road trip for love. It’s almost enough to convince me to turn to the dark side.
Well done.
Andrew
PS the mix and arrangement is really clear.

A nice story, beautifully told.
Songs about real persons always seem to have something special about them, and that goes for yours too.
Beautiful vocals, and the mix is as good as it gets.
Great work from all involved [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Wonderful country song. Totally enjoyable and I particularly liked your backing vocals.
I so hope she didn't become an oil tycoon! eek

Thank you, Alan, you're too kind (as usual). Well, with so many "lonestar state" and "Texas" lyrics and the like, there are LOTS of essess, aren't there? I have gone back and touched up the vocal track with Melodyne's sibilance reduction tool, and have reposted. The Melodyne method is most effectively done on a syllable-by-syllable level, which is time consuming, but I prefer the results to more heavy handed approaches. So THANKS for the listen AND the valuable suggestion. Always helps to have extra ears on things, especially ears as finely tuned as yours. smile

Howdy, Ron. Well, if I listened to more country, it would be this kind of country. I like the laid-back rockin' feel. I also like the character your singing about; for her sake, I hope the dream that came true was owning an oil rig! The only thing sticking in my craw is the line "The Lone Star state is waiting for her there" because Texas is the Lone Star state and my (possibly over-thinking) mind is like, "Texas is waiting for her in Texas?" But everything else comes across smooth.

Ah, a mystery. What a cool song to go with it, Ron. Georgia? What a good write, and it's always tough about a real person. I like the vocal and there ain't nuthin' simple about country when it's done this well.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, Andrew! Yeah, BGVs and bridges are my favorite songwriting elements, and I almost always have one or the other, or both. I listened to so much country (and country-adjacent gospel and folk) when I was growing up that it feels very natural to me. But exploring new genres is always a fun (for me) songwriting exercise. Glad you liked the tune!

THANKS, Floyd! Yeah, I was sure SOMEONE would buck the trend. smile Y'know, the Eagles have a lot of contemporary hate, not all of it unjustified, but I LOVE that early Eagles sound. Truthfully, I was probably trying to channel Gram Parsons more than any of the Eagles, but they both had Bernie Leadon, so not that much separation in those early days, is there? Appreciate the listen and the positive review. You're too kind, but it's nice to hear just the same.

Hi Ron,

Excellent song, listened a couple of times.

Love your vocal! Maybe a little too much de-essing, but not a big deal.

Good write, and love your mix!

This is a really funny song DC.

Props to your brother for the very funny lyrics.

I'm not sure if the exact word to apply to this style of humor, is it sardonic?? Very deadpan too.

It's definitely not "on the nose" and it's my favorite style of humor. Great job and really nice production man.
