Use Bar Settings to change style, tempo, or feel for just one section — perfect for making your chorus pop.When creating within Band-in-a-Box, I was looking to add a bit of variety to my song. I thought maybe a bit of change within my Style for a chorus would add that extra flavour I was looking for. Using a right click on the bar I wanted this change to occur at, I opened up the Bar Settings and used the .STY button to find a perfect variant to make that chorus sing. With a new Style selected, I hit that apply button and generated my change. With a red line appearing under the measure number, my Style change was set and a perfect chorus change rang through. Once I was happy with the length of my chorus, I selected the measure I wanted to return to my original Style, right clicked and set that .STY button back to my original Style. I generally use the bar settings for tempo changes. When I want to end a song by slowing it down to a final hold..... this is extremely useful. Most rit endings happen over no more that 2 measures. To do my endings.....assuming for this example that the song tempo is 120 BPM in 4/4 time.... I will add a number of measures to the end of the song.... maybe 8 or so.... I then change the last 4 measures of the song to 2 beats per measure. Each 2 beat measure gets reduced tempo by 10 BPM or so.... some more, some less, it's not super important to have the reduction exactly the same. But each measure is slower than the one before it. The last measure is a hold. The reason for the change from 4 beats per measure to 2 beats is so that the tempo change is not in "steps" that the listener hears. By using 2 beats per measure, the change sounds natural. A little bit of experimenting and adjustment may be required to get it sounding right. But when done right, it sounds really nice. I use the same technique as Herb does. The change to a 2-beat bar helps overcome the limitation of BIAB to integer tempos.

The reason for the change from 4 beats per measure to 2 beats is so that the tempo change is not in "steps" that the listener hears. Yes! This is a very important tip that a lot of newbie Band-in-a-Box users might not think of but can hear as an issue. Even those who are not overly musical can hear this sort of thing even if they can't explain what sounds "odd" in regards to being able to hear those "steps", and that's definitely a good way of tackling it. I've grown very comfortable with the bar settings window over the years, and it has certainly proven a handy little thing.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass.
