CARRICKFERGUS

I don't normally post covers or unoriginal material here, but a recent post by Brno with the same title prompted me to unearth a BIAB track I made in 2021. The arrangement borrows ideas from a version I heard years ago by Celtic Woman.

Carrickfergus (and the castle in particular) is of interest to me because one of my ancestors was born there in 1332.

Style is _STROLL.STY (Strolling Acoustic Folk) Key B; 115 bpm

RealTracks in style: ~2479:Bass, Acoustic, HeldSimple Ev 110 (reverb 0)
RealTracks in style: ~405:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Ev 120 (reverb 47)
RealTracks in style: ~1677:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking CountryBrent Ev 120 (reverb 53)
RealTracks in style: 3131:Fiddle, 5-string, Background AmericanaFolk8thsHeld Ev 120 (reverb 89)
RealDrums in Song: :BodhranCelticAir^2-a,b:Sticks, Simple (reverb 55)

Other instruments:

Reason 10 Flute sound-sample played on Korg K61p midi keyboard

Vocals recorded through Shure PG57 mic, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, Reaper DAW with Noise Ash Vocal Finalizer.

A bit different melody and lyrics than the original one I followed in my version. But so is often the case with folk songs. You have a nice voice, but your arrangement was too sweet for my taste as a fan of Celctic music, but may please a wider audience, even country song fans.

Brian, what a beautiful song. Loved the arrangement and instrumentation: loved that flute. Your voice is outstanding. Everything is mixed perfectly.

Loved it.

Love this, Brian. It's so cool that you have such a strong connection to the subject of your beautifully sung lyrics. An excellent arrangement with the perfect backup band. I really like that vocal a lot. My mom wished i could sing like that.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Fabulous job, Brian. First, your singing is nonpareil. Second, this song over the years has found quite a comfortable niche with a lush arrangement, as Celtic Woman did at the Slane castle concert. I love that 2007 show, it's available for free on youtube. Again, great job!

Hi Brian,

I've told you several times over the past couple of years that I think you are a marvelous singer and songwriter. I was so happy to see a new post from you.

This is so pretty - lush is the correct word. I think someone else already said that. I fully agree. if I had a million bucks, I'd give it up for a voice like yours.

Such a gorgeous song and production. I enjoyed this so much.

BTW, you might not know, but my wife, Di, passed away back in May. She is a direct descendant of King Edward the Third. If I recall correctly, he was her 17th great-grandfather.

All the best. And welcome back!

Alan

Hi Brno,

Thank you so much for listening and for your feedback. As you have noted, taste has a not insignificant bearing on our appreciation of (or interpretation of) Celtic music or perhaps music played in a Celtic style.
My own experience has been shaped by artists such as Celtic Woman, Aoife Ní Fhearraigh ('Mo Ghrá Thú' ), and the Norwegian/Irish duo Secret Garden. Their arrangements are considerably more lush than those one might find in an Irish or Scottish pub.
Personally, I find it refreshing to take something from the 18th or 19th century and giving it a bit of polish -- just as rock bands might give a modern twist to Beethoven or Bach, or The Boston Pops Orchestra reinterpret the Beatles.

Have a great day!

Thanks, TM. I watched the concert that you mentioned on TV. Epic. Bought several of their albums over the years (as well as a couple of solo albums by Hayley Westenra (who was part of the CW ensemble at one time).

Hi Alan, I appreciate your comments very much.

Yes, I did hear about your sad loss. I've lost parents, but I have no idea what it's like to lose a partner. I sincerely hope that you are finding it easier with the passage of time.

The ancestor I mentioned was my 21st great-grandmother, Elizabeth de Burgh, wife of Lionel of Antwerp, son of Edward III. Naturally, anyone who is descended from Edward is also descended from William "the Conqueror" et al (the list is so long it's almost tedious.

Thanks for stopping by.

I love the instrumentation in this - I initially thought it was going to be an instrumental version - but for my tastes it's not 'too sweet' as Brno commented.

Some favourite Waoist Adages:
#1: Play on the Way.
#13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you.
#58: Bring consciousness to it.
#63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made.
#92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.

Hi Brian.

This is really delightful music. Your arrangement, production and your singing are superb. I love the Irish folk-music lilt that you've managed to capture in your presentation. It's a perfect fit. I really enjoyed listening.

Such a ear-pleasing production. Very well sung with a smooth and expressive vocal. Flute is a nice touch and adds an authentic flavor.

DCRon stated it so nicely, " A fitting tribute to ancestors never met but not forgotten."

Great to hear from you. We love the open airy mix and the lush feel of the entire production.

We are also fond of digging deep into the past and working up arrangements of tunes.
You did an excellent production with this one and we'll have to check out some of the artists you mentioned.

Outstanding vocals and all sounded excellent on our monitors.

Great work!

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
