I don't have a great singing voice, so the possibility of cloning a lead vocal is appealing to me. I have been experimenting with several possibilities, and this is the first I am happy with. The bones of this song include BB tracks 1030 fingerpick 12 string guitar, 1007 piano, 1119 strum guitar, 2937 fretless bass, grunge drums, and 1850 muted guitar. Feel free to comment on the ethics of using a dead man's voice, I am pleased with the result.

Hi, Will. Like the classic rock vibe and overall production on your tune. Some of the aspects of the arrangement remind me of a Petty tune for sure. I'm guessing there's a bit more going on in the backing track than BiaB, as some of these sounds are hard for BiaB to pull off.

Never would have guessed these were Tom's vocals though. I mean, knowing that they were I can kind of hear it, but not so much that I ever would have figured it out.

No issue from me with using synth vocals if that's what you want or need to do. I'd hope that Tom's estate is collecting royalties from his voice, even though I'm not sure I'd pay for these myself.

AI is offering musicians a lot of options. It's going to be an interesting journey as the technology develops.

Hi Will! A great track! The parts that stood out to me were:

1) the intro chord progression is wonderful - if I got it correctly, it went C - Am - F - Dm - Dm6 - G - Em - C ... that Dm6 (if that's what it is) is a great touch. I don't know if this progression repeats elsewhere in the song other than the outro - but I wanted it to!
2) Solo - very powerful and I was glad it repeated - it created a good yet complimentary change to add variation.

Regarding the AI vocal, I wouldn't have known it was Tom Petty unless you'd mentioned it. For me, it was the lack of rhotic 'r' that I find is distinctive in Petty's vocal. While you did the right thing in mentioning it (IMO), it is different enough you could drop the reference I think. BTW, you're natural vocal I heard on some other tracks is good - reminded me of Andy McMaster from late 70's British band The Motors.

Not sure if you're looking for feedback on the mix, I would've loved it if the drums and bass were a little more forward (more volume - in my ears anyway) because they became momentarily lost behind the tremelo of the guitar from time-to-time, with maybe a bit of hanging delay or reverb on the final chord in the outro to lengthen it a bit. Overall, this is a very appealing song and good on the ears!

I've had a sneaky peak at several of your songs on SC - you've got a really good catalogue of songs there, and very listenable.

Hi Will, super groove on this one. I would have never guest that was an AI Tom Petty as it really doesn't sound like Tom Petty to these old ears. Like Andrew I would increase the drums and bass volumes. Great choice in those RTs.
Regardless I did enjoy this.

Hi, Will.

Interesting beginning. The guitars definitely have Tom Petty vibe.

I enjoyed the song - nice pop sound! smile

The vocal sounds fine, but only a bit like Tom Petty. That's normal, because even with the best vocal cloning software, the underlying performance needs to sound like the target in order to create a credible cloned vocal.

And that's probably best from a legal standpoint.

Legally, the use of sound-alike vocals is prohibited (except for instances like parody) by the Right of Publicity, which protects against the misappropriation of a person’s name, likeness, and even voice for commercial benefit.

Tennessee has passed the "ELVIS Act", which prohibits the unauthorized cloning of someone's voice by AI. It's likely to be followed by similar legislation at the state and national level.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I definitely hear the Petty...he was a good choice (and I don't think he'd mind but what do I know?). I like the classic MTV kind of sound; it's definitely something I would have hoped to catch on the radio so I could press the record on my cassette player!

PS: Updating to say after reading David's comments, I suppose it is rather unethical to use a dead man's (or women's) voice. Oh, AI! You're going to create so many new headaches and ethical issues for humanity.

Hi, WIll. I really like the melody and changes you have in this song. Good write and... well, well sung, Ai Petty. Man, this is excellent. I particularly that strong fretless. You seem to have a nice wall-of-sound affect, and I like how you mjixed the vocal. Keep those experiments coming, sir.

Enjoy whatever happens!
