In Win 11, I have BIAB set up to use "Asio Always". However, when I use The style maker the volume of the playback is effected by the volume slider in the bottom RHS of the desktop. Similarly when I export a Wav file, this also uses the Windows volume. I assume this means that ASIO is not used in any exports?
I want to export stems for a band using optimal settings, into Cubase 14. I am new to this. I have not seen a meter or anything to monitor the signal strength. Not a fan of normalisation.
Can anyone explain please.

ZeroZero, I can't answer your first question with certainty. But as for the "optimal settings" in your 2nd paragraph, you can normalize the stems or not. I've done one or the other on hundreds of songs and never heard an audible difference. It DOES make a difference with how you adjust volume levels in your DAW, which is where you will want to measure signal strength for your mix.
I use my sound interface's native driver, and my normal BiaB workflow now is to NOT select optimization when exporting stems.

Thank you. If you turn down windows volume and then, using a track that can clearly be heard on playback, export it, to a wave, do you. Get an audible signal?

Z, why are you using ASIO? Are you recording in BiaB? FYI I use MME in BiaB and I have no problems with any volumes. I have tried ASIO in BiaB before and gave up as there were to many problems. That was some time ago so that may have changed. Like I said I use MME in BiaB and ASIO in my DAW, thus I can have both of them on simultaneously.
Also what is your audio interface and does it use native ASIO drivers or are you using a MME wrapper like ASIO4ALL?

Z ZeroZero, I do not believe Windows volume has any effect on the volume of exported stems. Easy enough for you to try it with your setup though, right?

I run a Focusrite 18i20 and i run Asio to keep latency down. I could run windows ancient drivers for BIAB. I don't like having the volume controlled by windows, its not a professionsl thing to do, as if you have other things going on, maybe a webpage, the volume is also effected. The tech is not designed for musicians ASIO is. Even when ASIO is "Always Asio" it is not. TBH I have used BIAB for years just for playing practice tracks, running my virtual keys outside of the product. My confidence with the product is shot through be because everytime I try deeper integration, I run into problems with things not delivering. That is my opinion, others may disagree. Only this week I tried to reactivate the count in feature and it went flakey. But lets stick with this particular issue On my system, even when I run Always Asio as it is called it is NOT always Asio. One time I spent hours trying to find out why the Styles playback was playing at a whisper only to find that gthe styles playback is subject to the windows volume control which happened to be turned down. Similarly, the stems export to wav files is effected by the windows volume control, if it is down on my system, even when using "Always" Asio, then the recorded volume, of an exported wav file is too low. If the windows sound is down completely, then the wav file is silent. It does not seem right to me to have the volume control of windows dictating the recorded levels of Save Special exported wav files, whilst in BIAB the volume is playing fine. But hey that is how it is programmed. More flakey programming is no suprise to me. I have never used the BIAB VST, in my Cubase 14, until now, but today i did. i was not impressed by the results, the levels are wrong. Maybe, probably that is me. I searched for some way to monitor the levels of the output to the VST from BIAB, but I found nothing. I suppose that i can must alter the recorded levels of the song export to Cubase by altering the Windows volume control. It is hardly pro, but it should work. At the moment, I am trying to get out of the BIAB environment by exporting stems into Cubase, then I shall continue adding vocals and band members.
For me BIAB is absolutely fantastic, the best thing on my DAW, used every day, like a Maserati F1 sports car, tethered to a leaky raft, made by Robinson Crusoe in win 95, to travel the oceans.

ZeroZero, I must not be understanding your issue. Every music app I have on my PC DAW workstation is controlled by Windows 11 audio. Dozens of them from dozens of manufacturers. Windows volume has zero impact on how they FUNCTION, only on how they are HEARD. I have never experienced stems export being effected by Windows volume. Hopefully someone will recognize your issue and chime in.

If it has a name, could you please share it with us? B: What are some of the names of the 'windows ancient drivers' ? C: My experience is that Windows only controls the volume of the output, unless you make changes to its internal sound settings. I also run a Focusrite 18i20. But how is that related to asio in your case?

Please tell us the steps you use to export stems into Cubase. As I recall, some DAWs use a temp folder in BIAB that must remain, and other DAWs do not need this because they store all needed files in their own storage scheme. The reason this MIGHT be relevant and might be inconsistent has been described above, since it may involve an additional playback or reading of the audio. But that’s only a guess at this point.

I too cannot duplicate this - I tried ASIO, WAS, and MME, and in all cases exporting stems from BB resulted in the same volume whether Windows was set to 100% or 1%. I tried both the export dialog and the drag/drop function. Like Matt said, can you list all the exact steps you take to export stems, and also which exact ASIO driver you're using?

The volume fader on windows should not affect the output volume of the WAV files you export.
I have found that in my DAW, if I have the outputs too high or too low that does in fact affect the volume of the WAV file.
I have my system set up so that the first thing that uses ASIO will grab it. That makes it unavailable to everything else. So when I open BB after my DAW, BB has to use one of the other drivers. Even when doing this.... I have never had any kind of issue with the resultant volume of the WAV files I export from BB.
Regarding Normalization..... Use it when necessary. If the audio is of a sufficient level, it's really not necessary at the track level very often. I use it when it's needed and almost always on the final output WAV when it's in my audio editor while I'm getting it ready for prime time.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
