Out the Door
====================
Last year I wandered in to find you and grabbed a chair,
And pulled up to the red hot stove ya had burnin' there;
And warmed my frozen soul by the flamin' coal,
Blown away by the marvelous tales you told;
Listenin' to the stories that were bein' spun;
I said, Pardon me, fellas--I think I might have one.

So I jumped right in, pitched an op'ning yarn, then sev'ral more;
Before too long it seemed I'd chipped in a couple score;
They seemed to me superb, lacking any flaws;
I loved the warm and fuzzies, your kind applause;
So I kept goin' on, with spiel's I conjured up;
Eatin' up the glory, fill my cup.

It was a lovely gathering,
You put up with my blathering;
I'm glad you asked me to bring a covered dish;
The potluck was so amazing;
From A-to-Z I went a-grazing;
Glad you liked my special latin fish.

I took my turns, anticipatin' the great unveil;
Knowin' that the boys would like my fresh-cooked tale;
Aimin' for the hoo-rahs growin' ever louder;
Soon I had the feeling I was never prouder;
But then I thought..this ain't right!
If all I'm doin' is hungerin' for the light..
So I'll thank my friends and give up the floor,
As I let myself quietly OUT THE DOOR.

You are equal parts poet and musician. I really liked the quality of your voice on this one...very relaxed and certain. The story is very charming...a theme song for many a storyteller! Certainly a departure in style for you...at least what I've heard from you.

Lovely song, Tom. Like your use of the bluegrass band. Cool arrangement, and the stops and solo were very nice touches. Cute story, and very nicely sung indeed. Opening melody line on the verses kept taking back to Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" until I had heard it a couple of times. Really nice to hear this new(?) genre, looking forward to hearing where else you take us.

Fun trip!

Hi Tom!
An allegory (?) of this songwriter’s forum? Or of songwriting in general?
If there’s no audience, it makes me think … if a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
That’s it - I’ve used my post quota of question marks.
Good song!
Andrew

Love the minimalistic instrumentation in this song. Good to hear your voice singing again.

Tome,

I like your story! It's really fun. In places, the words are a bit rushed. I really liked the backing tracks. Sparse, but everything that is needed. The fiddle is particularly nice! Enjoyed my listen very much.

Man, you keep bringing us so much goodness in your writing, Tom. So many different styles and with each one you sound as if you grew up on it. AND your vocal fits them all. I like the band you hired and how you use them. Excellent production.

Enjoy whatever happens!

What a narrative and what a way to open it:

"Last year I wandered in to find you and grabbed a chair,
And pulled up to the red hot stove ya had burnin' there;
And warmed my frozen soul by the flamin' coal,
Blown away by the marvelous tales you told;
Listenin' to the stories that were bein' spun;
I said, Pardon me, fellas--I think I might have one."

Great and cool rhymes too.
As two who played in bluegrass bands for decades we gotta love the band!
Excellent use of those RT's and a fine arrangement also.

Throw in your fine vocal and it's all a great production.
Nice cover photo also.

Enjoyed it!
