Little Fingers
Musically, I got the idea for this song from one of Andrew Dee's posts where he mentioned a song challenge using the following chord progression: Em Am C B. Since I have no discipline, I was unable to stick to just those chords as you can see from the chord chart posted below. There are no pop melodies in this song, so sit back and enter the darkness..

Little fingers caught in the pie
Little fingers point to the sky
Little fingers turn back the hands
It’s the sleight that they don’t understand

Who stole your mother’s life
Violated your brother’s wife
Blasphemed the father and the son
Was resurrected in the barrel of a gun
Little fingers
Little fingers

Little fingers tore away my coat
Little fingers wrapped around my throat
Little fingers cross when they sign
With borrowed blood on the dotted line

Who stole your mother’s life
Violated your brother’s wife
Blasphemed the father and the son
Was resurrected in the barrel of a gun
Little fingers
Little fingers

Send back Mustafa, Ibrahim, and Javier
Dine on pirozhki, pelmeni, and caviar
Put on your man gloves to cover your skin
Lock all the doors and let no one else in

Little fingers

Scott, uber cool HUGE sound. LOVE your bold vocals, and those high harmonies are extra sweet. Nice work with the lead guitar fills, too. SUPER mix and everything just sounds HUGE (again) and glorious. Dark lyrics, but dark is cool.

"Little fingers" are referenced in a line from Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives". That one's dark, too.

So you're in great company!

Hi Scott! As long as you use the chord progression *within* the song - no worries. You can add other progressions. I think 7ths are okay as well. For your troubles, you have become an honorary member of the songwriting jam that Knee Wobbler and I attend, with a third. Every 5 or 6 weeks in Adelaide, Australia if you happen to be nearby. smile
It is dark isn't it. But of course, so are the words. Little fingers ... I wonder if that song is about someone I've heard of? I have a theory that fits the lyrics, but unsure if the name should be uttered in the forum.
Well done!
Andrew

Really enjoyed this, Scott..everything about it..esp how "complete" a production it is. I really liked the "Little Fingers" melody motif and how you used it repeatedly. Excellent work!

Thanks, Ron. I had forgotten about that line in WTD. What actually was running through my head was "Tiny fingers you almost feel" from Costello's "Tiny Steps."

That's very cool. When Taking Liberties came out I can remember being blown away by the quality and quantity of his B-sides and throwaways like "Tiny Steps". Still one of my favorite albums...

Scott,

What a cool song! Strong vocal and interesting lyric. Although I didn't listen to them much, I'll go with a Pink Floyd analogy. Strong in every way.

Well done!!!

Alan

A BIG sound, big vocal and BIG narrative.
A very universal narrative until the cuisine section too...mind you the food doesn't dent the global nature of the story.
Ab Fab Scott.

Hi there Scott

This has a really intense almost sinister sound to it…I like it. It also has some interesting counterpoints where it goes from high intensity and changes to an “at ease” melody as at the solo at 1.24. And the lyrics man, talking about violating your brother’s wife, wow, that’s pretty heavy songwriting stuff. Your vocal was also reminiscent of Bowie, I could hear him sing this, if only it were possible.

Great song, kind regards.

Now that's a cool Pink-Floyd-with-attitude sound - love it!
And I love the dark lyrics, and your vocals are just perfect for conveying that dark mood.
And I love everything else smile

Wow, great job accepting the challenge and making it your own, Scott. This is outstanding. You know I always like your vocals and this dark one is really quite special. SUre glad you have no discipline. What you may "lack" in that you make up for in creative goodness. The lyrics are as heavy as the melody. Some really fine twists in the music, which is mixed so pleasantly.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Brilliant song. I love the arrangement and production and the use of both rhythm and lead guitars. This song really has a great rhythm section.
