Hey Folks,

This one's a fairly simple jazz piece. I was listening to Alan Watts in the car the other day and was inspired by his quote, "If I am my foot, I am the sun." So everything was built around that and the melody that had popped into my head. I think there are unaddressed latency issues with the vocals, but I'm finding I prefer the creative process to the perfection process. Thanks for listening if so moved and commenting if so inspired.

LYRICS:

This world is like a fun house
full of crazy mirrors
distorting everything we see
How am I to know myself
when every image lies
tryin' n tell me I am not Thee

When I close eyes
then I realize
that there's nothing
that's not you

If I am my foot I am the sun
If I am a dream I am the one
one who loves you
one who serves you
one who knows the truth
one with you

the mind is always judging
comparing good and bad
separating me from everything
We were made in your image
but we behave like fools
imagine what waking up could bring

All I wants the truth
Heaven give me proof
that there's nothing
that's not you

If I am my foot I am the sun
If I am a dream I am the one
one who loves you
one who serves you
one who knows the truth
one with you

Beth,

This is one of the best things I've ever heard on the forum. I love the pacing & production on this song. And your vocal is KILLER! You are a great singer.

A new favorite!

COOL: "creative process [over] perfection process." I'm gonna add that to my function over fashion saying.

I really like the lyrics you came up with just from that little seed, and the melody bounces perfectly with them. Oh, yeah, I'm inspired to say what a wonderful vocal and a fine song. Much enjoyed, Beth.

Enjoy whatever happens!

You've described my writing process pretty accurately: I hear a phrase or see an image, and ideas pop out and I write a song around it.
Even as a non-jazzer, I really like your song.
I love the lyrics you came up with, and the way you perform it.

Great melody, great singing (of course). I liked the conceit of the funhouse mirrors, that was great. I really didn't get "if i am my foot, I am the sun." It sounds very French. (I walk, therefore I tan? Sorry, couldn't resist that.) I'm not hearing the acoustic guitar at all and the result is the track feels very empty on the right channel. (Maybe my system's problem). Really nice effort here!

Beth,

An interesting, thoughtful write.
I enjoyed the Big Bass sound of the mix. I thought the drums could use more volume.

Well done.

Hi Beth!
A good song, and lyrics that makes one think. I love the bouncy bass. Like others have said, I’d prefer to push up the volume of the drums, and I like that acoustic guitar at the end, and that could come in earlier and louder to fill out the song. However, I realise I am talking more about perfection than creation. BTW, I also am wired to be ‘ I prefer the creative process to the perfection process’. I know when I get suggestions for song tweaks, my mind says ‘Nope. I’m over that.’ smile

Wow, Beth. Just...wow. WOW! Super song and supersonic vocal performance. Super duper arrangement and mix. Dunno what you're quibbling about, this IS perfection. Wow. Super. SUPER WOW!

Beth,

Not just WOW, but Super Duper WOW! Sometimes I got lost in the meaning of certain lines in the song. But the sound is so good it didn't matter.

Agree the drums could have been louder, particularly given how sparse the backing tracks are. But the sparse backing is a perfect fit for the song. Very nicely done!

Rob, LOL...I just got your joke. It took me a minute! I'll give things another listen. I hate the thought of a sparse right channel!

Thanks, Floyd and Andrew. I often don't think of even touching the BIAB Style tracks, so thanks for that reminder.

Superb spiritual lyrics again, Beth. I love the chord structure and arrangement. Also great to be inspired by Alan Watts. I'm so glad that so many of his lectures were recorded,

Aside #1: in various spiritual writings and teachings the ego is defined in many different ways, but over 30 years ago I first defined it as simply "the focal point of externalising consciousness" (most definitions actually being more to do with the robotic externalising of subconscious contents), then it was only maybe 6 years ago I read Alan Watts definition: "The ego is nothing other than the focus of conscious attention."

Aside #2: Re your "I prefer the creative process to the perfection process." I've never taken on a spiritual master as "my master" as by the time I actually met one (in the mid-80s) I'd been studying world spiritual traditions for over 15 years, the guy I met and whose works I studied long after, being the Australian Barry Long (1926-2004 I think). Eckhart Tolle also went to his meetings in the early 80s and was very much influenced by him. But one thing Barry said (actually in reference to an ex-follower of Osho criticising Osho) which has always stuck with me was: "If you're looking for perfection in anyone or in any thing you're going to be disappointed, because only God is perfect." I was only 21 when I first rejected the common term in Hindu schools, "Perfect Master", for essentially the same reason. As is stated in one line of one hexagram in the "I Ching", even the sage can err, and over the decades I've so many times come across statements which in my personal inner and outer world experiences are simply wrong ~ and as many masters have stated, if it's not true in your experience, reject it. Thus I also "… prefer the creative process to the perfection process"!

Some favourite Waoist Adages:
#1: Play on the Way.
#13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you.
#58: Bring consciousness to it.
#63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made.
#92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.
