In a Rut

I will explain my thoughts on this one. I would love to hear what your thoughts were, good or bad.

Section one: you are in a boring mundane job making widgets at the local factory. The monotony of the job is getting to you (the drums, Chimes, and sometimes the bass-through out the song) so you forget about working and start daydreaming (the guitar). The drone of the factory fads in and out (the pads) through out the song.

Section two: Thus the boss yells at you so you get back to work (the bassoon)

Section three: You get very angry and have a hissy fit (the Guitar and Bass)

Section four: You realize you need the money, have no skill sets for any other job, and no desire to go to night skill so the mundane job is all that you have. But you have learned how to work and partially daydream simultaneously.

BiaB stye - Meteor Ambient Synth Guitar
Tempo 40 BPM

I deleted the bass track
Drums - the audio of the MIDI track
Piano - Kontakt - TZB05 - Soft Focus
Strings - Kontakt - 15 Sparkling Angels
Utility - Synthmaster 3 - Layer1 - OSC1-phase

I am playing the guitar (Xaviere 335 P90s) and bass (SX Fretless) tracks and via my breath and keyboard controller the Swam Bassoon.

I think you nailed it, Mario. There is something very disturbing about it, which I think is what you were going for. Or maybe I'm influenced by your suggestion. I wonder if it has been described as something meditative with flashes of insight if I would have had the same visceral response.

Hi Mario!
I could hear the production line in the percussion; the sadness in the bassoon; the anger in the guitar; and the tedium in section four. It makes me glad I’m retired!
Andrew
PS Well done! You’re very good at these atmospheric, emotive pieces!

Hi Mario,

A very beautiful, sad song. I like the congas, although you didn't call them congas.
That solo guitar is also very nice, just like the bassoon. About this last one; perhaps it is a bit too loud when it comes in (not all the time during the song).
I had to look up what a Rut means. Something boring. But your song isn't. I like that calm rhytme of the percussion and other instruments.
Funny you labeled your sections. Like I did with my lyrics in my last song. It makes listeners listen more intense to the song. A new style?

Mario, your narrative is perfectly scored. Each of your instruments play their parts according to the script and don't miss a line. Like how the bassoon comes in a little hot, just like a bad boss. The FX chain on the guitar does a nice hissy fit for sure, as does the playing, of course. Super job!

Telling a story without lyrics is an art in itself. Even without your guidance, your songs convey vivid images to me.
The best part for me was the crying of your guitar.
There's a lot of emotion in it, and in the last part, the person just gives up.
Really well done, Mario!

I never worked on an assembly line while on drugs, but this dream-like track, with its varying textures, made me wonder if that's what it might be like! I also agree that the bassoon, coming in, was a little jarring, but I love that sound. I esp liked those down-ward slides from the bass early on. As always, I enjoy your creativity!

Hi, Mario.

That was interesting and musical, even without the added narrative.

A bit disturbing too. crazy

Nice work!

Section 1: I fall asleep in front of the TV.
Section 2: I wake up feeling zomboid and worse I have to race to commandeer the poop deck.
Section 3: It's worse than I thought! I've got a stomach bug!
Section 4: I fall asleep on the poop deck.
Section 5: (Repeat Section 1) I wake up on the floor next to the poop deck feeling zomboid .
Section 6: (Repeat Section 2) I clean myself up, cursing my cruel stars.
Section 7: (Repeat Section 3) Feeling better I go back to bed.
Section 8 (Repeat Section 4) I put headphones on in bed and I slowly drift off to sleep listening to a playlist of Mario's more soothing music and I have amazing dreams of being pampered by a seraglio of 156 divine houris.
Section 9: I awake and there's initially there's a blissful silence, but then I suddenly realise that all of the above was a dream, but I awake to the reality of actually having 156 houris who are all shouting:
"YOU'VE OVERSLEPT AGAIN, CHAY! WHERE'S OUR FREAKIN' BREAKFASTS?! MOVE YOUR SAD [*****] OR WE'LL CONFISCATE BIAB!"

Thanx so much Beth. This came about as I was thinking about some of the people where I worked that did the same thing every year, didn't get a promotion, then complained about it. They did nothing to improve their situation and got mad at those of use who did.

Thanx Hans. I have to look at that last section. In a rut is a common expression on this side of the pond. I had to label my sections on this song as otherwise it may not have made any sense to the listeners. YMMV

Thanx Ron. Yes that hot bassoon intro was hot for that reason, I'm glad you caught that. Yes the guitar was hissy for a reason also. I'm glad you liked it.

Thanx Tom. I have never worked on an assembly like either but I have seen the same behavior with some in the R&D world where I worked.

I certainly like it. I think it is very well conceived , performed and produced. A good video would tell the story you wrote in text.

Thanks Mario for the explanation regarding the song's structure. An original but rather depressing idea about the individual's future.
Beautiful atmosphere; I really like the percussion.
