Kelton's Lullaby
This is my first venture into instrumental territory. The original melody, which comes in at about the :53 mark, comes from what I used to sing and hum to my son when he was a baby and he would instantly fall asleep. For this composition, I added more, so the song encompasses more than the lullaby, but also the nighttime experience for the infant. It is a simple tune. I am Salieri to your Mozart. No AI, just my brain, for better and for worse (often, much worse).

I usually use Studio One 7 as my DAW, but I also have Mixcraft and Reaper. I find Mixcraft is best for recording from my controller because I don't get any lag, so I used Mixcraft here. I haven't figured out how to eliminate the lag from the other two DAWs.

The Band:
RT3707 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm 90sAcRockArpPick
RT2482 Bass, Acoustic, Bowed Held
RT2509 Cello, Background PopEven Ev
The rest of the instruments are played via my keyboard controller:
NI Lores
NI Hybrid Keys
NI Schema Light
NI Symphony Essentials Woodwinds
Ujam Striiings
Ujam Score Virtual Pianist
Ujam Usynth Drive
Mixcraft: English Horn, Magic Flute, Flute

Wow, that was cool. So different and magical. You definitely captured a fun scape for some sweet dreams. Maybe you're actually Mozart! Or Willy Wonka. I just watched Wonka on Netflix and this has that sense of high fantasy and whimsy.

Very cool indeed, and VERY impressive. Hooked me with the subsonic rumble in the opening bar. Beautiful theme with oodles of interesting movement. LOVE the vocalized synth(?) sections, they sound like they're singing in an extraterrestrial language. The whole composition has a wonderful, dreamy ambience. Masterful stuff.

MIDI controllers should record on Studio One without noticeable lag, they do for me. At the very least is should record the same as Mixcraft. So I'm baffled. Think Mario uses Studio One with his MIDI arsenal, so maybe he'll come up with something.

You asked in a separate post if I was impacted by the shutdown. Short answer is no. I retired in 2017 and OPM continues to send checks since they are not funded through the annual budget. My son on the other hand had to work without pay. He'll get backpay though, so all in all the shutdown is a pretty senseless exercise. But then it always is. Hope YOU weren't impacted!

This was so good, it made me want to get back into MIDI. Is Lores what we're mainly hearing here with the vocals? You made me go to the NI page and listen to demos. Terrific mood piece, many elements but it all came together so well. Great job.

Scott, that is an absolutely incredible instrumental. Brilliant job on everything.
Loved it

PS - I use Studio One Pro 7 and I have no problems recording MIDI. Thus far I have recorded up to around 25-30 MIDI tracks with no problems. If you want to carry on a conversation about recording in Studio One just PM me. I would be happy to help.

Scott,

This is a truly wonderful instrumental piece.
The intro is grand, and I wondered what kind of lullaby would begin, but the main melody changed to a very gentle melody, which gave me a sense of peace.
The benefits of MIDI are really on display.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hey Scott, Well, as your first venture into Instrumentals, I’d count that as a success then.
Such a great feel and mood throughout. The opening and closing parts seemed very intense almost resonant, was that a conscious decision to add that as a sense of something imminent?

Really enjoyed it. Kind regards.

Hi Scott!
That sounded like it was taking me to a magical land! Some interesting passing notes and chords that really added intrigue and made me want to keep listening. The 3:31 was over in no time and I wanted more! Did your son usually fall asleep in 3:30? Like Ron said, those sub-sonics were cool - I reckon I could fall asleep to those low notes. Initially, I thought my audio interface was malfunctioning, but glad it wasn't and glad they came back at the end.
I have to admit that the half-instrument-half-vocal sound was a bit creepy, but maybe it is my adult ears listening that have been conditioned to weird voices at night.
Very interesting - I loved it!

Beautiful lullaby instrumental. The 'choral' intro and outro are particularly well done. I really enjoyed the listen.

I'm impressed, Scott.
World music, very atmospheric and a great selection of instruments.
And really well arranged and produced.
Tells a story without a single lyric.
Enjoyed my listen.
A lot!

Thanks, Ron. I wasn't impacted by the shutdown. I teach in Loudoun, but I know a lot of my students' families were.

Rob, yes, Lores provided the voices. It's a cool plugin.

Hi Scott,

That's a very impressive piece of music!

Loved the mellow, orchestral sounds of the woodwinds and horns.

I also enjoyed the underlying drone at the beginning, and the stereo separation of the voices at the beginning and end - they reminded me of a Gregorian chant.

Very nicely done!

Very cool! Kept me completely engaged with all the varying textures, beautifully woven together. Totally enjoyed listening to your "music weaving" lullaby.

Thanks, Knee Wobbler. I added the sense of uneasiness because of that night time uncertainty and darkness.

Andrew, thanks. Yes, my son usually fell asleep by the second verse. The sub-sonics were from Usynth. I needed something much lower than the bass drone note, so the synth hit the spot I was looking for.

Oh, what a great idea, Scott --a melody you sang to your son. I have those too --a;ways made up songs for them. Also, Ogden Nash (I think) said, "It is every father's duty to make up stories for his children." So, man, that was a lot of fun.

Speaking of fun. Man, this is an outstanding masterpiece for your first dive into instumental music. What an extraordinary production.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, BD. I do have one verse for the song, but I thought it would be better as an instrumental.

Thanks, Dave. Yes, it took some time, especially composing part other than the original melody.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
