Soundcloud: That was the reason why YouTube: That was the reason why DEVELOPMENT Written sometime between 2001 and 2003 (I have a midi file dated Oct 2004), this song details some of the me to my (now) wife and me while we were dating leading me to be very appreciative of being loved and loving her. I think the bridge might have been added last, as it usually is for me - but not sure when. A point of clarification: ‘that’ in the title refers to all the things we did – not how I am referring to my wife – just making it clear. At various times over the years when I have considered the song, I have wondered about the lyrics. I've decided there's a fine line between adoration/affection, sounding 'needy' or some form of obsession. Hopefully, the lyrics come across as the first type. Coming in just over 3 minutes, this song is fairly ‘vanilla-flavoured’ and not adventurous in a musical sense. When working on the BV harmonies, I was pleasantly surprised that I was singing (on ‘I can’t waste/live…’) 7ths and 9ths of the root – not something I designed, but it sounded okay so I kept going with it. There's a section of the song I've called 'middle bit' which is repeated - it's not the chorus because it doesn't contain the title, but I wasn't sure what to call it. Is this song an A, B and C structure? Those that know more about the theory of songwriting can comment. Love this, Andrew. Written at a time when every moment was a "that" moment. I'm getting chills thinking of my wife of 47 years and how many "that" moments were packed in there. I can imagine you feel the same. We can hear it in your vocal. Oh, man, I gotta play this for her. I referred to this song (without hearing it first) in a song I just posted here. Mine is about never knowing why, but this one is so good at answering it.

Best of all, she was and still is authentic - what I saw was what I got. Grateful, man. Andrew

Like this a lot, Andrew. Light and breezy but earnest and heartfelt. Especially liked your backing vocal arrangement and the (uncredited?) guitar break. Cool harmonic movement, too. Super mix, it all sounds great. Nicely done.

Nice tune, Andrew, definitely earworm material that will bounce merrily in my brain for the next several hours. Liked the solo, too.

Hi Andrew,
I think I can relate to the sentiment. I sometimes think why on earth did my better half choose me, why did she choose vanilla instead of strawberry ripple?!? I too am grateful that I have a an understanding, thoughtful and smart life partner. The song is full of all that realisation of how lucky we are to have that special person in our lives. There’s a part of the Middle Bit melody that reminds me of Mike Nesmith, and I liked the variation in texture during the bridge. The vocal was also very good.
Another solid write Andrew.

Re: the uncredited guitar solo, I wasn't paying attention to the Song Memo when I posted the new thread - Song Memo is not listing it for some reason? I wonder - does Song Memo not list frozen tracks? In any case, the guitar solo is: 4389: Guitar, Electric, Soloist Soul70sRelaxedPat Ev 100. Thanks for listening! Andrew

Yes, I was happy with the guitar solo section I used - and better still, I didn't need to regenerate or go splicing and dicing through the track to find it. Thanks for listening! Andrew

We are both very [lucky / fortunate / blessed - I'm not sure what the appropriate word is nowadays] men to have enduring marriages - easy to overlook in the day-to-day rhythm of life. Alison is very reluctant to receive praise about how worthy she is. I often quote a line from the movie 'As good as it gets' starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt - "You make me want to be a better man". (BTW - where is Greg Kinnear these days - I thought he was a good actor.) Re: Mike Nesmith - any particular song or just the general vibe? I have to admit that his 'Joanne' (despite its country leanings) is an all-time favourite of mine. I know we have both been likened to different artists from time-to-time, so I am always fascinated by these comparisons. As my mum would say "A fox can't smell its own den". Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Yes it’s Joanne. It’s at the end of the middle bit where you sing:
“I can’t live, without you with me, to have you near me To spend my whole life next to you”
…it reminds me of the last two lines of each verse, where in verse 1 Mikey sings….
“And I saw as she went a most hopeless situation For Joanne and the man and the times that made them both run”
The chords are different between the two songs, but it has a similar descending tone to Joanne.
I suppose on reflection and another listen, whilst not completely like Joanne in places it does still have some of that vibe.
Regards.

Regards. Hi Andrew. I like this song and I like the way the song form does follow a simple pattern (like mine do). Like you, I wonder why things happen...but I don't chalk it up to fate. I just think it's the randomness of life.

In Joanne, that section ‘for Joanne and the man and the times that made them both run’ goes IV - iv - V - I, whereas mine goes ii - iv - V but doesn’t resolve to the I root chord, but the ii in mine is the relative minor of IV in Joanne - so similar, and both having a descending melody. The vibe. It’s the power of the minor iv. What a wonderful song Joanne is.

You mention something that I hadn’t consciously thought about - when I met my wife, this was one of (or the start of) the happiest periods of my life, and I hope for her also. It seems appropriate that the song conveys a light, airy and happy feel because I recall that is what it felt like. Thanks for listening! Andrew

Hi, Andrew. Nice! With the guitar and BGVs, it's got a nice 60's vibe. The chorus works especially well.

Andrew, this is on outstanding masterpiece. This hit home for me "I can’t waste ... a lifetime, not knowing you’re mine And being better for loving you I can’t live, without you with me, to have you near me To spend my whole life next to you"
I have no idea why my wife wed me 58 years ago; yes we have had a ton of "that" moments. (Watch the original movie Grease and you will see our story.)
Great vocals and harmonies. Super groove and mix. One of your best for sure - loved it.
It takes courage for a man to admit his wife was wrong.
