New file uploaded at the SoundCloud link. Well, if bigger is better, this has GOT to be better. RIGHT???? Incorporated the following input:
1. Reduced vocal de-essing (Thanks, Dave/BlueAttitude!)
2. Widened the stereo field for the tremolo guitar (THANKS, BD!)
3. Reduced ambience on snare (Thank you, Laurent)
4. Added many, MANY more vocal tracks to the chorus (THANKS, you nailed it, David/dcuny!). There is an additional high harmony vocal and two cascading double-tracked BGVs.

If you only have time for a quick listen, jump to about :40 and listen through the first chorus.

Know many of you have listened, some more than once, so understand if you just say no.

Or no no.
Or no no no...no.

REALLY appreciate all the listens and input. To those who said I shouldn't change a thing, SORRY! I just...couldn't...stop...

Ha!

------

No No No No

Going for an even more outrageous, outsized, BIG sound this time. Used Waves latest Magma Stress compression plugin on the bass, vocal and guitar fills tracks to drive a sonic wedge through the mix. Everything except the vocals and guitar fills are Biab.

The guitar fills track was an improvised take based on the intro licks and intended as a placeholder. But I decided I liked the rawness and spontaneity of the take more than I disliked the sloppiness. That is, in the aggregate, I like the way it sounds.

Looking for feedback on how this sounds overall and anything else you care to comment on. Know the breaths are audible, but I can't decide if that's a bug or a feature. Also know this is very different sounding from my normal posts, but...what is art without experimentation and growth? Sorry, but NO, "AI" is not the correct answer to this (rhetorical) question. frown

Will update the song file and document here as I incorporate any feedback.

THANK YOU!

You look at me and say it’s all just science
When we’re standing on the shoulders of giants
Verbal sparring can be all fun and violence
Say what you will, but all I hear is silence

No, no, no, no
Don’t be that person
I can’t stand it
When we’re conversin’
And I can tell
You have been rehearsin’
No, no, no, no

You call your best friend and tell her our secrets
I feel so bad but you still have no regrets
You’ll probably post it on the world wide web
Even though that’s not remotely what I said

No, no, no, no
Don’t be that person
I can’t stand it
When we’re conversin’
And I can tell
You have been rehearsin’
No, no, no, no

You check your notes before you talk right through me
Goes to show that you hardly even knew me
I put your conversations on an endless loop
Knowing one day you might just get to the truth

No, no, no, no
Don’t be that person
I can’t stand it
When we’re conversin’
And I can tell
You have been rehearsin’
No, no, no, no

Don’t tell me lies
Don’t make me an experiment
Don’t try to fix me
I don’t want an argument
Maybe we can talk
And stay up all night
Don’t say it’s my fault
Every time we fight

No, no, no, no
No, no, no, no

Loved it, one of your best, both you and your brother! Vocals, guitar, all came together beautifully. The rawness of the guitars somehow worked magic commingled with your vocals. Some great rhymes like science and giants; secrets/regrets with their opposite accents was almost a stretch but I liked it. I usually say your vocals are the star of the show, but everything was stellar this time out. For a WIP, this certainly shined!

Ron,

For me, this is absolutely one of your best!

Awesome vocal and AWESOME production. It has an almost New Wave-ish sound at times, combined with a hard-hitting 90s Indie Rock sound.

The mix on this is big and splashy - lots of textures and air. Very cool!

I would not change a thing. Call this one done - it's perfect as is.

Hi Ron,

Well, you managed to achieve the BIG sound you were looking for BIG time! Huge!

Sounds great to me, one of your best.

Only comment seeing as you are looking for feedback is maybe a little heavy handed on the de-esser in spots.

Excellent!

Very cool, Ron. That swampy rhythm guitar with the fuzz tremolo (or whatever it is) is the signature for this song, aided by a lot of good movement in the bass, and those drums sound big as well, even though you didn’t use the Magma Stress on them?
Loved it!

I echo all the previous comments..I really liked the guitar fill motif and everything about it seemed just right.
I agree with Bob, I'd call this one done!!

Very cool. I'd call it done.

It has an 80s rock feel to me. Definitely not a bad thing.

Did you grab the magma on the free black Friday deal?

Let's see... if 2 negatives equal a positive, 4 should be twice as positive. And yes, this is positively a fine song. Good write with fun lyrics. (We can say they're fun cuz they're not directed to us. We are happy observers of the tongue-lashing someone else is getting.) Meaningful for sure. My favorite lines: "You check your notes before you talk right through me
Goes to show that you hardly even knew me"

Good backing band and mix. You said so well: "I liked the rawness and spontaneity of the take"

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes, this is an outstanding song.
Super rocker with a very strong vocal and great harmonies; you don't need no AI vocal.
I really liked your guitar on this one.
Great backing band and a perfect mix.

Ron,

Always know when I click on one of your songs I’m in for a treat. No exception here. Wicked alternative 80’s like sound (maybe . . . it has a slightly harder edge than that). Cool write and the production hits all the right notes. The “no, no, no, no” definitely hits ear worm territory. Excellent!!

Very excellent, gritty rocking cruiser! Great production in all respects, including the vocals. Re the lyrics, I've never been in that scenario with a woman, but "Even though that’s not remotely what I said" definitely pertains to male 'friends' I'd categorise as 'mostly positive acquaintances' who one way or another always felt they had to compete with me. Being misquoted or mis-paraphrased is a real pain in the butt! laugh

Thanks, Rob. May just be me, but although I like the song and the mix a lot, something just sounds a bit OFF to me, and I can't put my finger on it. Every time I try to fix it (whatever "it" is) a bit of the magic is lost and I revert back to the posted version. Might just be getting my ears acclimated...

Ron,

R.W.'s lyrics are always So interesting (and original).
You do an amazing job of bringing them to life (melody/music/vocal)
Y'all (you) have become one of my favorite bands...

LOVE your guitar track. It's the kind of "little touch" that makes a hit. Producer.

The synth pad worked SO well. So "integrated". It thrilled me every time it came around

Love the drop. Well done!

I listened 3 times on monitors, then 3 more with earbuds.
No discomfort.
The vocal has a "just right" hurt to it.
I think it was a trick question - to get more listens smile

I enjoyed every one of them.

Thanks, Dave! The Magma plugin is notionally a compressor, and only has one knob, but it must have a de-esser that kicks in at some point. But I think that's what's creating this itch I want to scratch. Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Andrew

Appreciate it, Andrew. The lead guitar FX patch is a Johnny Marr-style tremolo-heavy chain that I modded a bit. The fuzziness came from the Magma plugin. The drums have the Studio One "Drum Group" preset, which is EQ + multiband compressor. Gives a nice punch and lift to most BiaB RealDrums and I use it a lot. I like the BiaB bass line, too, but it only popped out when I entered a G7 chord, and not a G or G9. Lucky I found it!

Thanks, Herb. Yeah, this Magma plugin was the black Friday freebie. Decided to test it out on this track and liked it enough to keep it, which isn't the usual outcome. Glad you liked it!

Hi Ron,

This is excellent! You've really pulled out all the stops with the one. I really love the production. It suits the mood of the song perfectly. Everything about this is a perfect fit as far as my ears can hear. There is nothing I would change.

Yeah, great song Ron. Great playing, choice of tracks and vocals. I enjoy songs which are a little bit different and are stylistically different, this meets that criteria. Really enjoyed my listen.

Appreciate the listen, Mario. I do have to restrain myself on adding guitar fills, as I tend to overdo them. The entire guitar take is a single chord shape alternating between the 3rd and 5th frets. Sometimes the simplest things can sound the best...

It seems that the title of the song is not very unique, but the lyrics and the music definitely are smile Great sound and mix, the tremolo guitar works very well, true trademark of the song. The bottom is solid and tightly focused, you can really enjoy the bass in its full glory.

Lyrics go again deep into relationship conversation drama, although I cannot decide who's the winner, but the main character seems to be almost on the ropes smile

Enjoyed the vocals also. To quote Mario, "Yes yes yes yes", another pop rock pearl, soundwise bit different but in a very good way.

Janne
