Considering the complexity of demoing and selecting different Styes of RT "bands", do users often start with a blank style and add specific RT instruments to build a band which would essentially become their own custom built "style"?
I don't know if this is a cool idea or a rabbit hole folly.
Thank you for letting me know if this is crazy or impractical.

I find it easier to start with a style colse enough to what i want in BIAB, but then i go into RB and add/subtract/replace parts i don't like. starting from scratch seems unnecessary with the multitude of styles BIAB has available.

I find it easier to start with a style colse enough to what i want in BIAB, but then i go into RB and add/subtract/replace parts i don't like. starting from scratch seems unnecessary with the multitude of styles BIAB has available. Thanks for that experience! Why switch to RealBand to do the substitutions rather than just staying in the main BB interface?

I do what Bob does but I stay in BiaB until I export stems to my DAW. Don't think I've ever started with a blank page though at least a few users here do.

My approach is similar to Bob's and Ron's. I used to start in BIAB. Then when the song was created, I'd move to RB because Realband had some useful features not found in BIAB. Then, when I had the creation production-ready, I'd move to Reaper. These days, I don't use RB quite as much because BIAB has adopted many of the features that I used to use Realband for. My last couple of songs have been created and made production-ready exclusively in BIAB before moving to Reaper. Below is my approach to narrowing down the style options when I write songs. 1) Tap the tempo identifier in BIAB to find out what the tempo of my song is. (In older versions of BIAB, this is the "=" or "–" icon. ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=31904&filename=tap tempo 2026.jpg) 2) Decide if I want (a) 8-beat swing style (Sw8) or (b) 16-beat swing style (Sw16) or (c) 8 even beats style (Ev8) or (d) 16 even beats style (Ev16). 3) Identify the song's time signature. Mostly, I don't, though, because I like to investigate all genres when I'm finding a style. Apply the above filters narrows down the options for suitable styles. I then go through the list and listen to the demo for the filtered styles until I encounter something that appeals. I then mark that as a "Favorite" so that I can easily find it again. --Noel

In addition to the above... After playing around quite a bit with BIAB 2026, another way of filtering styles that I will be trying in the future is given below. 1) Find a well known song that has a similar feel to the song that I'm writing. Once suitable styles have been identified, I then go through and listen to demos and/or use the style to play my song's chordsheet. At this stage, I'm not looking for a style that is a 100% perfect fit. the reason i switch to RB is that many moons ago, PowerTracks (predecessor to RB) had things that BIAB didn't do and now BIAB does things it didn't do, I still find them easier in RB and i like the way RB has the tracks view showing everything at a glance. Force of habit but I know i'm not alone in doing the 'heavy lifting' in RB.

After clicking on the Request Tab in Multi-Picker, it took me to the forum topic of Songs to add to the Band-in-a-Box Song Titles database in the PGMusic Wish List and of course, that brings up a question from what I just read.
Quote from PGMusic: "This thread is for Pop/Rock/LitePop/type songs. All of these would be starting from 1950s to current.

- not already present in the song titles database in Band-in-a-Box 2017. You can easily see that, by typing the title in using the StylePicker, or the dedicated Titles Browser
For example, if you type "American Pie" .... and it isn't there, just post a message here, saying
American Pie - Don MacLean
(the artist is optional, though appreciated)

Let's not start adding 'obscure' songs that you think are awesome, but aren't know by a wide audience.
The test is, would a person familiar with the genre and the decade recognize this song?
The point here is that you wouldn't want to be browsing a titles database if it had a bunch of obscure songs. We're at 8,000 songs now, and they are roughly equal (country=pop=jazz). So based on that, you'd have to consider the song that you're recommending to be in the top 3,000 of the country or pop or jazz genre.
"We will update the database with the songs you recommend."
Main Question: How often is this database updated? If I request a rock song to be added on January 1st of 2026 and PGMusic decides to add the requested song to the Database on January 2nd, do we have to wait until December 1st, when the 2027 version come out, before we see the added song?
It would be nice to get periodic updates throughout the year or even better yet, give the end user the ability to add songs to their own database for their own use. For example, if during the year a user has 20 songs, not currently in the database, that they have found matching styles for, it could be nice if they can be added locally for local use only, similar when the end user creates their own User Style.

How often is this database updated? I don't know. I think it used to be updated at least yearly to be included in the new BIAB release. They used to put an entry in the thread "Songs to add to the Band-in-a-Box Song Titles database" to show how far they got. The last entry for this that I can see is up to 2019. I made a request for a title 2020, it is still not in the database. But that does not matter. It is as easy to enter the filter parameters manually, time signature, tempo, feel and category. It will be the same result.

One thing to clarify is that when you select a style based on the song title, you are not going to get the accompaniment to that song as you hear it on the original recording. You can't just select the style and get an instant cover version. You're going to get a style that closely matches the tempo, time signature, feel (straight or swing), and hopefully similar instrumentation (for example, a hard rock song suggestion won't give you an accordion and a pedal steel guitar, but most likely a crunchy guitar with a bass and rock style drums).

My normal method is different. I am a composer and arranger and I don’t want my work to sound like anyone else’s, so I do not use styles; I choose individual RealTracks.
Remember what styles are: they are curated combinations of RealTracks (and sometimes MIDI) that PG Music offers to save you time. You can do that yourself.

Matt that was really helpful commentary and got at the thrust of my original question. It was clarifying for me. Can you tell me more about your process about how you search for and especially audition RTs to use to build a band? Perhaps filter first for RT instruments and then use the demo button for solo and band renditions? I would love to hear how you go about this interesting build it from scratch process. Thanks for what you have already responded to!

Matt is actually showing his age - and giving away a long lost secret workflow.  In the old days there were no styles, but we were musicians and we found a way to get it done. Instead of laying out a bunch of details - use ChatGPT with this prompt "in pgmusic's BIAB can we not choose a Style and only assign the instrument tracks manually?" PS, there is actually more to the story of the time styles were first offered. But I would only sound like an old man yelling at the clouds.

Yes, I also using this method more and more rather than styles. I found it much more easy to get were I want.

When I know I want a specific set of instruments and want no outside influence on my song I use a blank style as my starting point.
I believe the majority of the PG Music styles include underlying MIDI patterns that can influence how the instrumentation tracks are created. By definition a blank style doesn't have any influential data except for tempo, time signature and feel.

I don't think the MIDI charts included with most RealStyles have any effect on how the non-MIDI instruments are played. But wouldn't be the first time I've learned something surprising about BiaB...
