Very cool song, Bob. Love the woody ambience of the backing track and the use of the violin. Haunting theme and strong vocals.
Captures exactly my feeling on visiting the battlefield at Gettysburg. Everyone should experience that, at least once. Am getting a chill now thinking about it...

The only rhyme was the final couplet of each verse, that was cool. Lot of well-turned phrases, as always. "There's a pull in the dirt and the stone" was one of my favorites. I loved how you all but spoke one line in the middle of each verse, that was brilliant. Strong production, too. Great work!

Hi Bob!
For me, the thing I noticed were the chords: moving back and forth between I - IV, I thought ‘He’s going to change soon’ but nope, kept on going until the move to V - I in the final line, like a tension and release thing, emphasising the title and theme of the song.

Bob, this so much reminded my again of John Prine. You are as good of a story teller as he was.
An outstanding arrangement with the perfect choice of instruments. Your vocal and the violin were fantastic together.
I've never been to Gettysburg but I have been to Harper's Ferry and Antietam.
Another winner for sure.

Ooo, I've spent a lot of time there, Bob. I've also heard and loved many songs of yours. Now I have both on one 3-minute piece. NYC to Gettysburg. What a wonderful trip. As always, the perfect lyics to match the perfect melody that matches the perfect lyrics, and all delivered with the perfect voice in the perfect mix of just the right instrumentation. I'd say that's pretty good, huh?

I really like this one. Somber and reflective.
I lived in S. Jersey as a child and I remember going to Gettysburg a couple of times. Certainly a place that played a very important part of the founding of this country. Great song.

I love the violin/fiddle in this. As I just commented on DC Ron's latest post I nearly always feel that instrumental breaks add to the dynamics of a song and it really dies in this, where it's perfectly placed. It then also make for a great outro. Otherwise, this is just another really, really excellent Bob Dean song!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
