I just set up BIAB to use the VST SynthFont64 as my default sound engine in BIAB 2026. I'm looking for especially beautiful soundfonts that will make VSTSynthFont64 sound BETTER than the Calkwalk TTS-1. The BIAB site info says there are soundfonts that even exceed 1 Gb..

Does anyone know any soundfonts that basically over the whole GM and GM2 range of sounds the sound quality is clearly better than that of the Calkwalk TTS-1.? I have a particular love for the sounds of piano and strings and flutes and guitars. But I do have VSTI's to improve these sounds if I want to and if BIAB can handle them without crashing-which it frequently does.
Any links or references would be appreciated. Also is the use of the VST SynthFont64 my best option to have the nicest-sounding GM softsynth for my BIAB GM sound engine. (Right now I virtually always use GM styles.)

Check out the list of free SoundFonts on the Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth webpage. VirtualMIDISynth is an excellent replacement for the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth (no longer installed with Windows). I use the Arachno SoundFont. Good sound quality without being huge. SoundFonts load into RAM. Depending on how much RAM you have, that may or may not be a problem. I'd be careful choosing a SoundFont if you have less than 32 GB of RAM.

Coolsoft is the way to go. I have been using it for years. My choice of SoundFont is 8mbgm_enhanced18 for a simple reason.

I have played bluegrass banjo for 40 years now and after checking sound fonts for years, this is the closest I have found to emulate a real banjo sound.

Of course, that's my opinion.

The good thing about Coolsoft is that you can load numerous soundfonts and try them all out until you find the one you like, and soundfonts are easy to find on the web. If you don't find one you like on Coolsoft's website, just do a Google search on something like "Soundfont Websites" and start looking.

For example, check this out.

Is the sound quality better than that of the Calkwalk TTS-1 or Bandstand? I have lots of RAM--96 Gb's so that should not be a problem.
With no RAM problems what would be the best soundfont to get and use?

Peter:

What I like, you may not like so it is best just to install Coolsoft and download a bunch of soundfonts and try them out. That is what I did and listened my song of choice with each one.

Here is my pick out of the 50 or so I have tried over the years, but you may want something with a different sound to your ears.

I keep them all in a directory I named, imagine this, c:\soundfonts

8mbgm_enhanced18.sf2
ChoriumRevA.sf2
Coyote Forte GM.sf2
Masterpiece.sf2
PhoenixGM2.1Final.sf2

I think they are all good and as you can see, coyote forte is among those listed.

Confused. I've been using VSTSynthfont64 Vsti, that is included with Band in a Box for quite a while.
I have also been using Coolsoft MIDIMapper for years, for other purposes.
I set it up in MIDI driver preferences tab, unchecking my VSTi synth (as instructed by the prompts).
I tried it out and it kind of worked (heard playback), but
The default synth gets crossed out in the mixer
No level movement shows on the mixer Master Volume Meter when playing.
Master volume control no affect. BIAB 2026 Build 1224.
I must have missed something.... Anyone?
