THE BARN

Why a song about a barn? Well, If Interested … in high school Bud spent summers doing farm work that included hot, hot days of stacking hay bales in a huge barn. Later his stepfather owned a barn and much later Bud owned a barn. So barns are in his memories. And those memories include seeing the collapse of many small farms as big agriculture took over … long sad story.

Thanks to Peter for the guitar fills/solos and advice with the mix/arrangement. And thanks to PG Music making it all possible. The lyric is on SC. If you choose to listen we always appreciate your time to do so and welcome any comments.

This a sit n settle listen.
Lovely sounds from the band, the guitarist & a gentle, restful swing from the singer.
Built like a barn...space, purpose and strength.

Cheers

Hi, J&B.

Everything sounds great. There are some interesting chord changes, which keeps my attention.

As usual, Janice sounds at home, and Peter's guitar fills nicely. I like the tremolo accents.

Good story - changing times. I appreciate the back story as well! smile

Thank you Ray. Your comments mean a lot to us.

That last and analogous sentence could not be any more eloquent.

Much appreciated,

Wistful and wonderful, ya'll. Very calming on the surface, but a lot going on beneath. Especially like the twisty chord changes. The long held note at the end is sweet, too.

Can't think of a fresh way to say this: GREAT vocals, SUPER lead guitar and STELLAR mix. So I'll just say it like that. Ya'll are the best.

My grandfather made a living and supported a family running his one man farm in south Georgia. Spent a couple of summers as a teen shadowing him. Saw hard work close up, and did a bit myself. But his farm and the hundreds of others like his are all gone now, overtaken by corporations, combines and kudzu. It's progress, I know, but it's sad as well.

Love this song. I could tell a few barn stories. Maybe another time...

Hi J&B. I like this. I was raised on a farm in NE. Our old barn was built in the early 1900's and collapsed a few years back now. Memories. Thanks for posting.

Thank you.

We liked that tremolo too as it reminded us our bluegrass days when Janice played some mandolin.

Glad you liked the narrative as farm work is not exactly a common subject. 😀

And thanks for mentioning the progression and backstory also.

Much appreciated!

Hi Janice, Bud and Peter!

I like the lyrics in this song with observations of barn life. The percussion metering away gave the impression of the long and slow manual effort of running a farm, and this was also borne out by the vocals and other instrumentation, with the harmonica painting occasional respite from the labour.

I’m interested in how the 3 of you collaborate, given Peter is in Sydney? Do you send him a draft mix, then he sends his guitar stems back with commentary and suggestions? I’m assuming it might sometimes be more iterative than that?

Good work, as usual!

Andrew

Janice, Bud & Peter,

This is such a beautiful "from the heart" song...

I also have fond memories of old barns from when I was very young in rural Chepachet, RI. This song speaks directly to those memories.

I love the way Janice delivers this lyric. Full of passion and melancholy. She is one of the very best singers around. I also love Peter's guitar lines and subtle interplay with Janice's vocal. Truly spectacular.

Bud's mix is of the highest order. Crystal clear and pro all the way.

This is one to listen to over & over again.

I'm so used to hearing you folks release something upbeat (often with a swing beat) and was expecting the same here! I was pleasantly surprised to hear this beautiful, soft flowing song that has been wonderfully produced!
This is probably my favorite vocal performance from Janice out of the many, many songs I've listened to of yours! Such a beautiful delivery from start to last note!
Peter provided excellent support on guitar!
5 Stars!
Thanks, TB

This is a really good song on a topic of vital importance: What future for our agriculture and our farmers? I think everyone has some idea about this, but I'm not going to get into that debate. Thank you for this beautiful song and for asking us the right questions.

Great song delivered by a wonderful chanteuse. That harp almost had a Mickey Raphael quality. Nice guitar fills. Yep, factory farming is a bad thing on so many levels. My brother, who is 91 now, was a white house correspondent during Ike's time. Ike was obsessed with painting barns and covered bridges and gave my brother many barn watercolors, which now cover my brother's living room walls. Great job with this song, team!

Janice, Bud & Peter, this is a masterpiece
Everything is as good as it gets in music

"On a porch an old man looks up from his weathered hands
He gazes at the barn now bordered by corporate land
For years the family has stubbornly refused to sell
Will it last? …. now only time will tell"
This is so true. Most all of the farms around have been bought by corporations. It is so sad.

Loved it

Thank you for the very nice review. It means even more given that you have experienced farm work.
"One take Janice" surprised me with that long note. Thanks for mentioning it.

Glad you liked the guitar, the vocals and the mix.

So we both did some farm work in S. GA Heckuva coincidence! smile

The small farm situation is indeed sad. They are very hard to find nowadays.
Land bought by corporations and crop allotments leased to big ag.

We three appreciate your comments!

Excellent song all around, It reminded me of visiting my cousins whose father owned a farm. What I recall most about playing in the barn was the amazing number of rats which ran about as soon as we disturbed the hay! It also reminded me of something completely different: an old friend (now passed away) who I named Baron Baddie Von Barnes as at that time (1973) he lived in Barnes, London. His interest in any actual barn would have been the rats! laugh

What? No cajon, Janice? Ooo, man, I love the laid-back-I'm-busy-not-being-busy feel. Love those vocals and excellent choices of harmony. Yep, I'm a farm country boy too. Man, the lyrics are so well crafted and match the feel of this beauty. Dang, Peter, you make every song so much better.

Enjoy whatever happens!

J&B+P,

Nice write. Heartwarming and heart-wrenching.

Gorgeous vocals.
Nice production.
Peter's guitar is perfectly supportive.
Excellent mix.

Very cool album cover.

Like you (and Ron), I spent childhood/teen summers working on Grampa's farm (and uncle's farms) in Iowa. Bailing hay, cutting silage, walking beans, milking cows (by hand and machine) and chasing piglets to be neutered. Always glad that I eventually got to go home to "city life" afterwards...but glad to have had the experience...

You are most welcome and we are glad you found it relatable. Wish that barn could have held on.

Appreciate it,

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
