Sometimes I come up with a ridiculous song like this. Besides the Band in a Box files, I sent my vocals through the online royalty free AI program (which does not cull from works done by other artists), Audimee, and used the screwball vocal of "Ralph." https://www.johnwalradt.com/music/songs/listentothedogs-2026jan03.mp3Style is _CMPFMH2.STY (Campfire, Hank 2 Guitars) RealTracks in style: ~528:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Hank Sw 120 RealTracks in style: ~372:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Hank Sw 120 RealTracks in song: 2855:Harmonica, Background CountrySwingJellyRoll Sw 120 LISTEN TO THE DOGS SCREW AT MIDNIGHT Words and music: John Walradt Well, the evening’s warm though the sun’s gone down And I’m feelin’ good though you’re still around Well, pretty soon we’re gonna be homeward bound Just listen to them romantic sounds. Well, listen to the dogs screw at midnight Listen to them crazy dogs go at it in mid-flight And I say it to you I think we ought to do it, too Listen to them crazy dogs screw at midnight. Well, this farm is full of pups and little kitty cats And I tell you, my friend, they know just where it’s at By the light of the silvery moon They’re gonna get it on in the month of June. Well, listen to the dogs screw at midnight Listen to them crazy dogs go at it in mid-flight And I say it to you I think we ought to do it, too Listen to them crazy dogs screw at midnight. Well, listen to the dogs screw at midnight Listen to them crazy dogs go at it in mid-flight And I say it to you I think we ought to do it, too Listen to them crazy dogs Won’t you listen to them crazy dogs Come on and listen to them crazy dogs Screw at midnight.

Hi John! I held it together until the outro - then lost it. My wife asked what I was giggling about and I replied ‘You don’t wanna know.’
I can see why you didn’t title this song ‘The greatest ‘come on’ line never used.’ I’ve never heard dogs at midnight, and I’m trying desperately to get a mental image out of my mind - of dogs in the act with glazed looks.
I normally try and focus on the music when listening to others’ songs, but your title and lyrics just grabbed me from the get-go - and I want them to let go.
‘Ralph’ indeed.
Andrew

Hi, Andrew! Always a pleasure to see you again. That song is kind of like a car wreck. You don't want to look at it but you can't help it. I've very seldom played it in front of people for fear it would become my signature song despite all the other songs I've written! I've neither seen nor heard dogs in that activity...even worse, what would they do afterwards? Look for a discarded cold pizza still stuck to the cardboard in the alley? But I guess it's part of pop songwriting...put together catchy melodies and words that stick like glue! Oh yes, "Ralph." All the poor Ralphs of the world who might chance upon Audimee! John

John, this is freak-en hilarious! My foot was tapping, my head was bobbing, and my lips were smiling throughout this song. I didn't care for the vocal but the lyrics more than made up for it. A fantastic song.

Thank you, Mario! The vocal is quite raspy and goofy, ain't it? A real screwball. I wrote that song when I was bussing tables at the Black Angus restaurant in Boise. I don't know what inspired me to write it. I usually come up with a melody first and the melody feels like something so I run with it. John

Hi again John,
WINNER…of the most obscure song subject matter!
This is as far removed from your previous song as is possible. I don’t know about dogs, but I get to hear possums breathing heavy and banging around on my rainwater tank after midnight. If they’re not going hard at it then they must be planning to convert my tank into a spaceship!
Yeah a fun song, good choice of style, good lyrics. Enjoyed my listen. Kind regards

HI, KW. Even more obscure...I've never heard dogs going at it and it's just fine with me if I never do! Yeee-haaa! With any luck, they'll join your possums on their newly constructed spacecraft. Our domicile here in Yucaipa is something of a zoo. We have cats, coyotes, possums, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, traipsing through our patio and the grassy area in back. Looking for the arc? Well, no, they don't come in pairs. We just try to keep the neighbor's perpetually empty house blocked off at the base so that the skunks don't enter. One skunk was angry at us for putting blocks in front of his entry way so he sprayed our house. Anyway, I'm not sure how I came up with that title except that the tune just felt like it and the words went together well! Thank you for listening and enjoying it! Best to you, John
