Not sure what this will mean in the long run.
(I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on TV....)

I use a LOT of their products.

It would be sad for them to be done and release no new products or updates. It will be AWFUL if their demise means the products I already own cease to function!!! Is that likely?

I strongly suggest multiple backups. I have two backups here and one at my brother's house.

FWIW - I believe any company that ceases to provide support for a software program then said software program should be available for free.

NI<->DRM. Only drive clone, later used on same machine will solve this. To my understanding it uses system ID to tether authorization.

I believe NI is too big to fail, with roughly 1,000,000+ paid users plus it is embedded too deeply in music making community. I am not authority on the subject, but I don't know of any music making software company of this magnitude that would just close doors. Sure, anything is possible, but I believe chances of total doom are very slim.

Cakewalk (Sonar) in the final days of Gibson had roughly 100,000 - 150,000 users. In the middle of the hot mess, chief hinted that if for some reason they would have to shut servers, they would do permanent unlock of paid software. I can still activate my Gibson 2017 Sonar.

Having said that, I usually do a full drive clone every year smile

I'm not a lawyer but I have slept at the Holiday Inn Express.

I remember when I first bought one of the NI products. It was one of the Komplete bundles (version 4) of 6 or 8 synths. I actually still have it on my newest DAW and it still works and gets used from time to time. At that point in time they had a couple dozen offerings. A recent look at their website shows a listing of almost 1000 products.
I'm thinking they've spread themselves a little bit too thin with so many offerings as opposed to focusing on the things that made them into one of the best synth makers in the music industry.
I'm a pilot, well, I was a long time ago, and one of the sayings that got drilled into my head was Don't drop the airplane to fly the mic. In other words, attend to the main task first. A lot of companies, when they get too big, lose focus on the main objective. That may very well be the case here with NI trying to be the solution to everything. When you have too many things going on, and you have upstart competition selling similar products for less than half what you have to charge, the future starts looking bleak. And I think that's exactly where NI finds itself now.
How, or if they can find a way out of this mess has yet to be determined.
They make some really top quality software and it would be ashamed to see them fold up.

NI acquired iZotope a while back. I'm up to Ozone 9 Advanced and standing fast.

I wonder how much AI is impacting these businesses. If AI can produce and mix and master, why spend money on DAW's and plugins, etc?

I'm absolutely sure it's been playing a big part. Why buy and learn how to use synths, and acquire the keyboard skills when you can write a prompt for "80's style synth"?
Same thing goes for the mastering..... Ozone 10 or 11, cost vs just let AI master it, especially when you can easily compare the O-10 results with the AI results and can't tell which is which.

As Dylan sang.... The times, they are a changin'.

Sheesh. Izotope is what our productions are centered around. Yeah as mentioned you can clone your drive (we Apple folks back up multiple times daily) but a new OS can kill many fx. For example current Izotope products are still not compatible with the current MacOS that was released in October.

Yes and today's release of Logic Pro 12 is bad news for Intel Mac's. It will only work with Apple Silicone machines which I have myself but for a lot of folks this might not be the case.

I am kind of a music software junkie and I own Ozone 11 and NI Complete but this year I did not upgrade to the latest versions as I could not see anything there worth doing so. To me it seems like the investors want these company's to push out something new just for the sales. If you look at how much the upgrade costs are compared to how much they added or lack of quality. How many synths, compressors and so on does one really need?
I know AI has a lot to do with all of this and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. I am not against certain functions with AI but I don't want it doing everything I enjoy about making music.

As a note: My Facebook time line is periodically filled with adverts for plugins and synths. The vast majority of these are all under $40 with a large number under $15. Just for grins, and because I liked the sound I heard in one of those adverts, I paid $11 for one of those. The piano and strings in this thing are amazing. Meanwhile, NI equivalent .... in different packages are way more expensive and you have to buy two vs one. Oh yeah, the $11 package runs on Kontakt as the host.

IMHO if one uses AI to generate lyrics, melodies, vocals and all the instrumental tracks they are not "making music" or exhibiting a whit of creativity.

I have had the identical experience when it comes to sounds. I have a ton of third party sounds that sound either equal to or superior to NI's sounds and at a fraction of the cost.

This is likely to have more to do with debt load taken on from acquisitions of iZotope, Brainworkx, Plugin Alliance that didn't pan out. All these were merged in 2023 under the Native Instruments umbrella.

Now, that doesn't mean that AI isn't indirectly to blame. But it's more likely that someone had overly optimistic predictions that didn't pan out.

There's a really long thread on another forum, where someone with far more savvy than me pointed out this article:

https://midnightrebels.com/the-end-of-an-era-native-instruments-private-equity-and-the-crisis-of-music-tech/

Quote
So why the insolvency filing now? It appears to be a strategic step known as a “transfer restructuring.” By entering insolvency, the potential buyers (Bain/Bridgepoint) can negotiate to acquire the assets of NI—the code, the brands, and the team—without taking on the heavy debt load left by previous owners. It effectively cleans the business, allowing it to emerge as a new legal entity with a healthier balance sheet.

I wish this would have a more assuring statement, like "You are guaranteed to be able to download and activate existing purchased products in years to come even if we go belly up tomorrow" but at least something:

I like what Rusty (Misha) and others are saying. We can hope that they promise authorizations will remain possible even if the worst happens to the company.

In the US, this is what we call Chapter 11—court supervised reorganization with some relief in debt repayment schedule..

Francisco Partners, their venture capital overlords got them into this. I expect that some divisions will be consolidated and others sold. That’s a lot of quit valuable IP.

Some are waiting to see if Muse Group will suffer the same fate. Francisco Partners put up the many billion$ for them to acquire Hal Leonard and other entities.

Based on some stuff I read here (and elsewhere) I purchased Izotope's / NI's Music Production Suite 8.5 this last weekend. While searching for tips and tutorials I found this thread. Did I throw my money away? Is there actually a chance they could shut everything down? If they did shut it down would we have any recourse?

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
