AFAICS, if I set the percentage to, e.g., -60 to get the tempo set to 40% of a track's 'normal' tempo, there's no way to get back to 100% in a single change. Please update me if I'm wrong.

My first attempted workaround was to add an extra one-beat bar with a rest, then back to 4-beats on the next bar, so that I can make the change in two steps. That seems to work OK with the tempo, but seems to insert some rests before the melody.

My second attempt is for that single bar to remain at four beats, but obviously I then get a long pause before the music starts, which feels quite odd.

The count-in is at full-tempo, but my 'mournful' into then comes in at the -60%. Is there a way to set the count-in at the -60% tempo?

TIA,
Gordon.

Hi Gordon,

Have you tried setting the song's tempo for the slow tempo? Then when you want to return to the faster tempo, just enter the faster tempo in as an absolute value in the appropriate bar. This will create a count-in that is the slow tempo and then lead into the intro also at the slow tempo.

Regards,
--Noel

I would do this the way Noel suggested also, however, if any of the tracks are Real Tracks then this amount of stretching is likely to result in unwanted artifacts, (but I'm sure you already know this).

Hi Noel, AudioTrack,

Fixed tempos will work, for sure, but it means having them buried in the F5 bar options, which can be a nuisance if one wants to change the main tempo and have the variant tempos follow. I guess one could put something in the notes text to remind where the changes are, or there is/was an option on F5 to list all changes within the song. Definitely an option, though. In practice there are only two places in this song.

Most are RealTracks, but the melody is MIDI, and I have everything except that muted during the intro anyway, so excessive stretch is not an issue. There's the possibility, of course, to use different styles. More stuff in the F5 settings, but definitely feasible.

This is another good description of why support of non-integer tempos would help. One must obey some commonsense limits of pitch or tempo changes, as noted.

Hi Gordon.

Indeed there is an option that you might find useful. It's under the Layers icon and it's called "Bar Settings". If you activate this, your bar settings will show on the chordsheet. (As you will be able to see on the image below, I've set the tempo of bar 9 to 56.)

I haven't got BIAB with me at present, but I believe that there is a print button in <F5> Bar Settings that will list all of the changes. It uses Notepad.

That's correct, Trevor. It can be accessed through either the Memo or Bar Settings. In both cases, it's at the bottom of the window.

It would be nice if PG Music were to allow entering percentages in Tempo change to box, by appending the % at the end. So, Tempo change to 60 would set the tempo to exactly 60, whereas Tempo change to 60% would change the tempo to (original song tempo x 60%).

This would eliminate the clunky Tempo change by % usage which can get even trickier to use during repeats, since it wouldn't be affected by repeats and you can easily reset changes by setting Tempo change to 100%.

Might also make it easier to simulate the ritardando (and similar) effects.

So... useful feature request?

Possibly the best place for this request is in the Wishlist section. It may get better noticed if you post it there.

I've been exploring this a bit more.

First, thanks for the Layers hint ... there are several useful featyures on those tabs.
When I looked for the Print Summary option, it and other buttons were off the bottom of the dialog. I just had ro resize.

Some of what I was trying to do is easier than I'd realised as I wasn't really aware of the percentage box in the main song-settings area (the "Relative Tempo"). Setting that to 40% gives me the very solemn intro that I want, including the count-in, which is great ... so far. But at present I still can't see how to get back to 100% on the bar settings. The F5 bar settings appear to change the headline tempo, not the headline "Relative Tempo" percentage.

I presume that headline percentage primarily is aimed at people practicing a song at a slower tempo, rather than as a means to achieve what I'm trying to do.

I think this all boils down to a number of piecemeal little features that don't really work together as an overall strategy. Maybe that's inevitable with a mix of needs for tempo changes: song tempo changes, practice tempos and so on. I do though think the change by should allow more than 100% in one step, particularly as it allows -90% in one step ... that would take several bars to restore the original tempo.

My strategy now is probably to set the main tempos for the slow part, set the faster parts via F5 and tweak platying speeds by the "Relative Tempo" percentage, though I would much rather see the actual tempo than a percentage.

I had started to write a wishlist post for this, but I now think perhaps I should contemplate the whole process before trying to suggest something.
