The music was written by Harold Orlob, the lyrics by Will M. Hough and Frank R. Adams. The song was published in 1909 and was first introduced in the 1909 musical The Prince of To-Night when it was performed by Henry Woodruff.
Early popular recordings were by Henry Burr (1909), Billy Murray (1910) and Manuel Romain (1910). In 1947 it was used as the title song of a movie about Joseph E. Howard, leading to renewed popularity for the song.
An instrumental version is played in the background as Malloy and Reed cruise the parking lot of the Domino bar in 'Routine Patrol: The Drug Store Cowboys'.
In my western swing swing version I sing and play plectrum banjo and guitars. I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper.

Man, my mom would've loved you, Arri. I love how you sing so many of the songs she used to sing. You always manage to come up with the perfect remake with a lot of respect for the history of the song.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Esa!
Love this - a wonderful melody and chord structure. Your choice of fiddle and mandolin solos was also good - good all round.

Love these old songs. I have been looking at some of the old songs from the 1800 - early 1900 to give a new spin too. Well done

Another nice one, Arri. Your singing and playing match the time period perfectly, as does the BiaB arrangement. Listening is like being transported back into an idyllic time. All this musical fun and a history lesson, too!

Very cool.
