I'm doing some recording now after a hiatus of a few years.
Somehow my mind is telling me that there used to be a way of locking a track to keep from inadvertently recording over it. I used to record with PTPA and I thought that feature was in it, and I did some recording way back with RB 2022 and I'm thinking the same thing.
I checked the documentation and did a search here but I came up with zilch, although I must admit that the pdf search capability was somewhat limited and the site search gave back so many results that didn't cover what I was seeking so after a while I had to give that up.
Could someone please tell me if my memory serves me correctly that RB used to have that function and no longer does, or if it never had it and the latest version does not have that capability.
BTW, I sure do miss that large red gradient color of the track bar in the tracks window that 2022 had. Is there a way in the 2026 preferences to enable that?
Thanks BluegrassPicker

Hi BGP, If you right-click your mouse in the Tracks window, then click on "Generate" from the pop-up menu, you find the option "Freeze track from generation" available. This should do the job for you. ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=32406&filename=freeze tracks 2026.jpg) --Noel

Thanks for your reply, Noel.
I had a chance to try your suggestion today, and it didn't work. The Freeze Track From Generation selection through the menu system enabled the little snowflake icon on the track, and I tried that before from the track window by selecting the snowflake. I thought what the heck, maybe it would work when going through the menu, but no dice either. The recording with the snowflake active with the track number selected and in red just performed as a normal active recording take.
Maybe my setup doesn't have something in the preferences selected or de-selected, or something.
Thanks for the good suggestion, it was worth a try, and much appreciated.

om That's what I've been doing. Would be simpler just to be able to check a box or padlock icon on the track to lock it and be done. What happens, and it's probably just my ignorance, is that I'll select a track for recording then move the mouse over to some other track to check something out or whatever, then come back to the track to record, then lay down my masterpiece recording that just nailed it in one shot so absolutely beautifully (yeah right) and then get the "Do you want to save" box, punch Yes and then find out that I just recorded over my previous other masterpiece track of a different instrument or vocal. Like I said, my ignorance and my bad, and I'm far more careful now than I used to be. Live and learn. I back up frequently as well (fanatically, having worked many years in IT) but that leads me to another wish-list item. As I progress in the project I do a "Save As" and add an incremental number such as "MySong-1.SEQ" then "MySong-2.SEQ" etc. That way I can go back prior to the latest changes or additions to "before" if the latest needed to be undone. Many programs have a History window that can be used to step backward. I haven't seen one in RB. So, in RB when I select "Save As" I am often taken to some directory other than where the original file is located. If I simply add my incremental number to the file, the file is then created in that other directory, not the original. That happens often if you go to a VST directory to choose a plugin preset, etc. You're taken to the last opened directory to save your file, not the original. I learned I've gotta be on my toes and pay attention and not get lazy or I end up having to search around to find where that "lost" file went. If there was a way to keep a "Save As" file in the original file's directory, that would be helpful. Also - and this is a real wish-list item for many programs like RB - have a "Save As Incremental" that adds a number to the filename so you can just select that and keep on with the project. I guess it's laziness on my part, but when I get into a project I get super focused and "stuff happens". That's why I was curious if there was a locking mechanism. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. BluegrassPicker

Hi BGP. I've just tried it in Build 8 of BIAB, and Freeze is working correctly. (I also get a message pop-up to say that the track is frozen so it won't be generated.) Have you installed Build 8 yet? To check which build of RB you have, have a look under the Help menu and select "About Realband". If Buil 8 is not installed, it can be found at the link below. https://www.pgmusic.com/support.realband.htm--Noel

I believe Freeze from regeneration only applies to tracks generated internally by the BIAB style or adding a RealTrack SuperMidi or midi instrument from the MultiPicker.

My recording computer had RB v7. No snowflake protection there. My working computer has RB v8. No snowflake protection. I just now updated the recording computer to RB v8. No snowflake protection there still. For testing: -I'm using a new unpopulated creation of a SEQ file (no SGU loaded) -selecting (arming) an empty audio track -recording a bar or two -applying the snowflake (via clicking the snowflake or via the menu) -recording a bar or two -Keep Yes -RB copies the new audio over the top of the previous audio everytime.
Not a major issue for me, I was just hoping for something that I might have been missing.
Thanks

om Yes, it's under the File section in RB prefs. Check the box if you want the open and save as folders to open independently. Mine was checked. I'll do some experimenting. Thanks Quick recovery to you - been there done that several times. Some minor, some not so... But God's been good. BluegrassPicker

Snowflake is a BiaB feature. If I open a BiaB file (SGU not SEQ) I do a couple things.
First I right-click the track and get to where it says "Make all BB tracks regular tracks". Caveat: you no longer have a BiaB song with BiaB features, like regenerate all the tracks using a style, etc. Instead you have all those tracks 'frozen', as in you have to intentionally record/generate a given track(s). In other words you don't worry about what you want to prevent from getting generated and instead focus on what you do want to generate.
Then I save as a SEQ file so it is saved that way. Then you can safely work in RB focused on what you want to change vs what you have to try to prevent from changing. And you still have the original SGU file if needed.
This is a huge difference in how RB and BB work, fundamentally, for me. Plus it's linear instead of chorus/verse options.

Thanks rharv, very interesting.
I'll do some experimenting with that.
I love BB and RB - it's been a lot of fun for many years and I don't know what I'd do without it.
But I have a flat spot on my forehead from beating my head against the wall quite often, and then another flat spot on the other side where I slapped myself very often and said "rats, I should have known that". But your hint saved me from that part because I didn't know about that.
Thanks again for the advice. BluegrassPicker

Rharv, didn't read your post as a dig at RB. You totally misread my remark and if you did, so will others. it's best I take my post down. BIAB and RB are a team - RB doesn't need a defense nor does BIAB. My post was about workflow, which seemed to be on topic at the time. No problem, .my fiend, I took care of it.

One thing to note (and I'm not in front of my computer, so I presume it's the same for RB2026) is that when you make all BIAB tracks regular tracks, and you then generate the song again (using either the same or different style), it will generate an new entire set of BIAB accompaniment tracks at the top and move the non-BIAB tracks down. Of course, after making the tracks regular, you can still either full or partially regenerate that track using the existing selected instrument or a different RT instrument. So it's not a total track freeze.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I haven't yet started my experimentation with some of these suggestions due to time constraints, but the thought did occur to me that in the interest of simplicity to accomplish the goal of protecting a track from being recorded over in RB wouldn't it be easier if there were a padlock icon or other mechanism to click on that would lock the track?
The background reason for my original question:
At this time I've only been doing some "simple" multitrack recordings by laying down separate tracks of variations of rhythm guitar, lead guitar, banjo, dobro and bass and some vocals depending on the song. Years ago in PTPA I used the drums in that program for my "metronome" while recording. Now I'm using some styles and even using the bass from them in my recordings instead of doing my own (they sound good and I'm probably getting lazy). I'm not at this point in time trying to construct an entire song with total BIAB accompaniment from start to finish.
My workflow has been to lay out the song in its entirety with the chords in BIAB with the chosen style, tempo and key and then I'll designate the sections with bar-based section letters. I then create the SGU file and load it into RB and then designate the sections once again with bar-based section letters (since the BIAB ones and RB ones are not compatible). I then record the rhythm guitar on a separate track, then record the other instruments each on a separate track. Often times I just lay down a portion of a separate track in the proper place for a lead instrument break, and do a few on separate tracks so I can choose which ones sound best to keep later on.
In that process of recording on multiple separate empty tracks is where I sometimes (often) end up recording over a previous recorded track, and that is where the "padlock" would come in most handy for me. I've been paying much more attention to which track is armed for the recording, but that "padlock" would surely come in handy.
There are probably better workflows to accomplish the same overall goal of constructing a song, but I have been counting on my previous very limited experience in PTPA, BIAB and RT to help me get the job done. The advice from everyone here on the forum in the past and present is and has been very extremely valuable to me to help increase my very limited experience with those programs. All suggestions and help are very valuable to me and appreciated, and my eyes and ears are always open. Thanks to all.

Well, when that happens here I just undo (Hold CTRL key and tap 'Z' or use the Undo Redo arrow icons) Then try again. But this time don't make that same mistake again. <grin /> You haven't really 'lost' anything in RB that was already recorded as long as you deal with it right then, and don't close out and come back, but you may have to try recording that new track again 'Undo' is your friend. BK...
another trick is say designate tracks 100 to 200 in rb as muted dupe tracks. this way if you want to say ensure track 9 is not lost dupe it to track 109.. and mute...see what i mean ? so you can recover. big note..a big studio producer once said to me 'if you cant do your song in 40 tracks...question whether the song should be done at all'. (except orchestra productions with many players)
so you could designale tracks 1 to 40 the original tracks and 100 to 140 the saved dupes. in case a prob with undos.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
