This one’s for Andrew Dee, who has already checked out my Bandcamp collection …

It’s been ten years since I recorded the following song, but it’s been 47 years since I wrote it. At that time, I was still young and naive and, for quite a while, very much in love with a girl who had, unfortunately, a very different view of the world than I did. It was then that I realized how important this is in a relationship.

Title: »Daughter of Light«
Based on the style TRAVEL!.STY
Key: G minor
170 BPM

At that time, I only used GarageBand to finish what I got from Band-in-a-box. Unfortunately, GarageBand also changes with every version of macOS – different instruments, different sounds, etc. –, so again, it’s impossible to remix the song today from the old files.

Here’s the song in Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/opur-music/daughter-of-light

And here the lyrics:

Daughter of Light

Because you are a daughter of light
and I’m a son of the earth
there’s no bridge from me to you
no way to understand

Because you are a woman from heaven
and I’m a man from the world
you’ve fascinated me with every move
and I tried so hard to reach you

REFRAIN
I thought I could love you, but now I see
our two worlds can never be joined
But please believe me, I regret
that it ended like this

Because you are a daughter of light
and I’m a son of the earth
I never felt your hope
as you’ll never feel mine

Because you are a woman from heaven
and I’m a man from the world
our ways couldn’t be more than parallel lines
and now they must lead apart

REFRAIN

Because you are a girl from the angels
and I’m a boy from the men
my love destroyed more than it built
and was hopeless ever to find it’s aim

Because you are not from my world
and I am not from yours
I could never really see your thoughts
and maybe I’m still mistaken

REFRAIN

Hi Opur!
Thank you for posting this song - I came across it when sampling your music the other day and it had instant appeal for me. I’ve always liked swing-feel acoustic guitar songs so was instantly drawn to it. The matter-of-fact approach of the lyrics is contrasted with the bouncy, upbeat feel of the music. I like how you brought in additional layers of instruments as the song progresses and then variation. The cello/strings add a nice touch as well, albeit with slightly too much volume that crowds out the vocal, but by the time they enter, the listener is already familiar with what the vocal is doing. Talking of vocals, I like how you used octave harmony on certain lines, then back to the main vocal only for a tinse of intimacy.

In style, your song reminded me of one by the band ‘Her Space Holiday’ and their song ‘Sleepy tigers’ ( Here on YouTube ).

Great song Opur - I’ve added it to my Soundcloud favs playlist.

Andrew

Good song, good vocal. The lyrics don't rhyme, were they originally in French? Good job with this.

Nice song. Maybe you should check the key to suite better to your vocal range. Now it sounds to be a bit to high. I like your arrangement, specially the strings, but maybe they are a bit too loud and covering your vocals.

Very nice, Opur. SUPER vocals and vocal arrangement. Dreamy, timeless feel. Almost like a folk song, but not quite. Great demonstration of the durability of many of the older MIDI styles. The strings give the song a nice lift, and I like how you used them, too. Super job all the way around.

Hello Opur,

I really enjoyed this song. It’s light and fresh and flows really well. Perhaps full of youthful exuberance and passion, when you wrote it. I couldn’t fault it, the mix, lyrics and production all sound perfect and professional to me. I’d expect to hear that on the radio.

Great song. Kind regards

Guys,

thanks so much for your encouraging words.

This must be the first time anyone’s ever complimented my voice, by the way. I’ve actually always loved to sing, but I never felt as though anyone liked it, which made me a bit shy about it. In my twenties, I played bass in a band, but we had a singer with a real rock voice; I was only allowed to sing “Message in a Bottle” because I could hit the high notes (back then), otherwise I was at best part of the background chorus.

No, I've always written songs only in English. I just didn't feel like the lines had to rhyme.

Yeah, that’s the big dream, of course: One day getting in the car, turning on the radio, and hearing your own song.

I guess we all feel that way, don’t we?

There’s something to that. I remember I was in a bit of a hurry back then and hadn’t quite figured out how to automate the volume yet. And as for my vocal range, it has of course decreased since the time I wrote the song; it would be interesting to see if I could still sing it today.

HA! You'll like this: I read the opening line of your post, and when i hit play it wouldn't. I thought, hmmm maybe it is just for Andrew. Sure glad the second one worked. hehe

Man, we often hear how the old songs are the best, and man, this one proves that. What a wonderful feel, and the lyrics are so good. Excellent vocal including the harmonies. Such a good write and production, Opur.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Opur,

What a history that song has; 47 years ago you wrote it and 37 years later you recorded it for the first time. I'm a bit curious why?
It's a nice song, lovely lyrics and you have a good voice for it.
The chorus of this song really needs to be sung high. After 47 years, that is a lot harder than it was back then...
I have a song like that too, with even higher notes in the chorus, and that is 50 years old. I had to rewrite it completely to adapt it to my current voice.

But as I said, a very sweet/sad song. Really enjoyed it!

Hans

Thanks for your nice words, I'm glad you like the song.
Why I recorded it so late? Well, it's simple: because I didn't have the technical means to do it back then. When I was young, I had an acoustic guitar and a cassette recorder. You could record a song with them, but it just didn't sound like much. (Actually, I once recorded this song as well, but the recording got lost.)

Later, I invested in a 4-track cassette recorder (FOSTEX), but every time I tried to produce a song really well, I was utterly disappointed with the end result—so much so that it always took me a long time before I tried again. Even when I finally bought an iMac and suddenly had GarageBand included for free, I couldn't get it to sound the way I wanted; the drums, in particular, were always a problem.

The game-changer came in 2012 when I discovered Band-in-a-Box – I don't need to explain to any of you why. But then I still had to figure out how to use the audio interface, the effects, and so on, before I dared to record my first songs. Although the results were immediately much better than my previous attempts, my standards have risen along with it, and I’m basically still learning how to get it right (and I rarely pull myself together enough to keep going).

In a nutshell: I’ve wasted a lot of time, growing old in the process. frown

Opur,

Sounds good. Really like that thud-y bass - drives the song throughout.
Nice vocals.
A pleasant arrangement.

Hi, Oour. The melody is just beautiful and expresses the ethereal poignant lyrics. I really liked it. You mentioned some doubts to your vocals which I think work very well. Your vocals have a distinct sound that relates to the rest of us instead of the polished pro vocals that sound smooth and wonderful yet sometimes lose the meaning or feeling of what they're singing. Yours are honest and I often find that to be more appealing. I have horrible vocals. There are very few songs I've written that my vocals actually work on.
