Remake of a song originally done in 2018:

The remake has a new bass track from Marty (BabuMusic), a new drum track, and a new guitar solo. I kept the solo close to the original, it's just a simple solo but it fits the song well IMHO, I just added a few notes at the end so that it transitions into the vocal better.

Boring production notes to follow, lyrics after that wink

The Band and production notes:

Drums: EZDrummer3 (original version used: FunkyGroove60s^2-a: Snare & Tom , b: QuarterHat FloorTom)
Bass: Marty Straub (original version used 2609:Bass, Electric, ClassicFunkRootFiveAlex Ev 130)

Piano: MIDI SuperTracks in song: 2840:Piano, Rhythm SoulJazzMike Ev 130

Bridge Piano part: Chris Spruit

I used a midi track for the piano instead of audio because Chris had an idea for a bridge/piano part which she plays, using midi for both makes it flow better. I no longer have the VSTi I originally used to render the midi, got lost on an old computer, so Chris used one of her VSTi's to do the render.

I recorded three guitar tracks, two rhythm and one lead.

Mixed with Reaper, mastered with Ozone 12.

The vocal is the one Chris recorded back in 2018, however I ran it through the vocal effects chain I use now, very different than what I used back in 2018. These days I use mostly plugins from iZotope, back in 2018 it was all Waves plugins. Exception is the Waves Vocal Rider plugin, I almost always use that.

One of the biggest changes for all of the remixes I have done lately is using the Neutron 5 unmask plugin, it's a game changer IMHO. For this mix I added it to the bass track and I'm feeding it's side chain input from the EZD3 Floor Toms track, so it carves out space in the bass track whenever the Floor Tom hits.

I also route all the instruments to an instrument bus instead of the master bus. The instrument bus has the unmask plugin added, and I feed it's side chain input via the vocal track, so it carves out space for the vocal, mostly in the guitar and piano tracks.

Right on Time (2018, Chris Spruit)
V1
right on time
pouring rain has fallen
from the mouth of a blood red sky
right on time

now that the thunder's spoken, after lightning broke the sky
after the heat has gone now
running veins of dusty lines
back into life back into the times of growing high
right, right, right on time

V2
right on time
after the words been spoken
from the tongue of the lightning strike
right on time
my mother once has told me from the catcher in the rye
all my dreams are broken
by the greatest thief of times

*Gin a body , meet a body
Coming thro' the grain
sweet child, sweet child need a body cry *

Bridge/Solo

V3
the wind sounds like a whisper through the alley of the grains
soothing rain has fallen
falling down to cleanse the sky
get back to life
back into the times of rising high
right, right, right, right on time

(*INFO: a children's rhyme song that inspired the author of the book Catcher in the Rye)

Dave,

Wow! What an awesome remake of a great song! The mix is spectacular. Love the great guitar and bass parts as well. The piano is also a standout track - sounds tailor made for this song.

As usual Chris is on fire here! Loved it!

Dave and team, what song, performance and great blues rock vibe!
Everyone has done such a fantastic job.
Your choice of the piano is such a good one!
I must mention how solid and perfect Marty's bass parts are on this, they really carry the song along!
Chris's vocal is so smooth and really draws the listener in! She is such a pro level singer!
Dave, the guitar parts are really great, both the cleaner tones and the heavier solo parts!
It was a great idea to update this and well worth several listens!
Take care, TB

All your work has paid offf, I'm quite sure. This sounds terrific. Your production skills have become quite impressive. i also love any reference to a classic piece of literature. To my ears, Chris sounds softer in the mix. It still sounds great, just different. It may be the way she decided to sing it, hard for me to know. I heard her emphasizing some words, but I didn't hear that bite I usually get. I went back and listened to your previous post, and it sounded like I am used to hearing her. So I don't know what to make of the difference. Still outstanding!!! EDIT UPDATE: Nobody else has mentioned it or concurred so it's probably just my weird ears.

Superb song on every level! Babu-the-Bass Marty excels, Chris's vocals are as always perfect for the piece, plus I love that 2-part instrumental break. Just what was needed and a 100% fit.

Great poetic lyrics.
I love it when you have to think about them.
Marty's bass is as solid as ever and a smooth silky vocal from Chris.
You did a great job on the rest, Dave.

Hi Dave!
This has a great Latin-blues feel, and I agree with others about the piano being definitive. Everyone did their parts well - it all sounds very natural. Well done!

Dave, this REALLY POPS! Very snappy backing track, and the bass is (of course) pendulous and cool. Great job transitioning the MIDI SuperTrack part to Chris' part. That turned out great. Chris' vocals are nice as always, and I like the vocal FX chain you're using here. Great tone and touch on your guitar parts. Really love your playing. Super mix, too.

Thanks for the reminder about the iZotope unmasking plugins. Can't remember why I moved away from them, but they are great at what they do.

Thanks, Bob, we were all pretty happy with how the remake turned out, and nice to get Marty in there, we didn't know him back when we first started making music together.

(I love all your remastered versions, because now I have the chance to discover all your fantastic older songs that were released before I joined the forum)

A great song with a super mix, tight bass, and tasteful guitar playing.
And as always, Chris is the icing on the cake.
Enjoyed my listen a lot [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Hey Bob,

The vocal is actually the original one, I just used a different signal chain on it. I actually liked the way the original sounded but Chris thought it lacked clarity. Nothing weird about your ears, just a personal taste thing wink

Thanks for the kind words and all the support over the years!

Man, i've been in a lot of recdording situations over the last 58 years, but the best time of all is recording Blue Attitude songs. Y'all can hear how incredibly gifted Dave & Chris are. When i get to play to a track with his guitar and her amazing voice... well, no words --you get it. Love this song. Those lyrics are just... WOW. Love the way that gal thinks and how she puts it into words, then sings them like no one else can.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yeah, the instrumental break is a highlight for me too, adding that piano part before the guitar solo, which was Chris' idea, kicked it up a notch. Thanks, Chay!
