You may well already know, but if not: you can search both RealTracks and Styles for a keyword like flute. Just put it into the search box, possibly setting or clearing other filters first.

There are dozens of "flute" tracks available. To find all the Real and MIDI tracks, go the the MultiPicker, enter "flute" in the Filter String box and browse the tabs along the top for RealTracks, MIDI Sup (MIDI SuperTracks), and MIDI Tk (regular MIDI tracks). You might also look at MIDI Sol (soloist) and Mel (melodist) tabs. Or even the RealTracks tab as Gordon suggests to see all the integrated bands PGMusic has put together with a flute in the ensemble.

Incidentally, another trick(?) that might be handy, is that one can also search for the name of the musician who played one RealTrack and often can often find the same musician with the same instrument playing in a different style.

I am a friend of Patrick who posted this question and we have started our BIAB journey together trying to understand how we can use the software for creating backing tracks.
Thanks for the advice on finding the flute sound; we will take a look.
Patrick wants to include the sound of a flute playing a "melody line".
We are struggling to understand where in BIAB that is done. The flute obviously needs to play "notes" not chords. Where exactly can this be done in the software?
Thank you in advance for your help

The steps to get to a flute melody track will differ depending on whether you want to write your own melody or use BiaB-generated melody tracks. You can enter a flute melody of your own with a MIDI track using a flute instrument patch. You can also modify one of the BiaB flute RealTracks using PlayableRealtracks. There are also BiaB MIDI tracks based on a flute. None of these are for flute "chords" as flutes don't play like that.
There are lots of folks here who use a LOT of MIDI, and they can provide more details than I can.
Welcome! Good to have a friend to share the learning experience with. You can make lots of new friends here, too.

I use BiaB for part of my backing track construction, if the style is appropriate for the song I'm doing.
I play sax, flute, wind synthesizer, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards.
In my rack, I have many hundreds of synth voices, with sample based, fm, linear artthmetic, and physical modeling synthesizers. One of the hardest voices for me to emulate either using a keyboard MIDI controller or a wind MIDI controller is the flute.
The flute changes tone at every octave, and the breath noise component changes in intensity. I can get a good flute sound, but not a good flute performance with the gear I have. But thanfully, I have a "real" flute if I need one.
Question can you create a melody "note by note" in BIAB without playing a flute or keyboard and importing as a midi file?
Steve, I'm going to give a too-easy-to-be-true suggestion: Open the Piano Roll in BiaB. That's where you can build a MIDI track note by note.
That does sound too easy to be true
I'll give it a go.......
Edit
I have just recorded a very short midi track of the Flute playing complete rubbish on my song Thanks Ron
Thanks for the advice......my knowledge of the software is slowly improving as I even worked out how to change the record function to record Midi and not audio

Steve, very cool. I can remember how thrilling it was when I listened to my own first MIDI track rubbish. Seems like yesterday.
Happy playing!
Cheers, I'm looking forward to meeting up with Patrick again and putting this knowledge into practice.
So I can now tell BIAB to create a melody line to my selected chords using a selected instrument and I can also record a Midi track using the Piano key pad. I have also worked out how to edit the melody line that BIAB creates which appears to be possible note by note.
Last question .....
As neither myself or Patrick can play piano can you create a melody line using any king of "notation" note by note where you can select what note to play and for how long (tone, semi tone, quaver etc) ?

Steve, yes, all that is doable. Might be best to watch this video, as it explains the basics of navigating the piano roll. You're signature says you're using the 2025 version, but if you've upgraded to 2026 the piano roll has been redesigned.

Thanks for that very useful.
Yes I'm using 2025. My Piano roll looks slightly different. Is that video for the 2026 version?
I'm probably being thick but if I start a new song that has no melody line how do I add notes from scratch? Clicking the keyboard of the piano roll does nothing, even when I drag and click. I can understand how to edit an existing melody but not how to start from scratch. Like I said probaly missing something easy again
Edit
Answering my own question
control & shift click can add new notes Yesssss (I found this within a slighly different video available within BIAB )

FYI - Chapter 10 in your 2025 manual shows you how to input notes via your computer keyboard. You may find this a better option than using a mouse. YMMV
OK, a random thought; Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?
