After using a pc for over a quarter of a century and always using the Shutdown option its only of late I have started using the Sleep and finally the Hibernate option.

I'm loving the Hibernate option as it seems your SSD (best for doing Hibernate) writes a file to the drive, saving its state, your pc will then turn off, you can even disconnect the power and it will restart in a fraction of the time that it normally takes, when you power up again.

On an old pc here that is about 30 seconds.

Now and again its still good to do a proper shutdown so that drives or other issues can do a proper restart, but on the whole Hibernate is great, if you haven't tried it.

I still shut down. But then, I live in Florida, which appears to be the thunderstorm capital of the USA.

Many years ago, I worked for the phone company, back when they were all attached to wires and utility poles. I was trying out what it means to be normal. Normal was over-rated, I went back to music in a few years.

I saw a North America lightning map, and the most strikes were in an oval from Palm Beach to Tampa. I live in the first oval surrounding that one.

Sent out to evaluate a repair, I also saw what lightning can do. The line from the pole to the house was empty, with a few beads of copper outside the neoprene, where the rest of the copper leaked out. At the house, the metal flashing of the roof melted, making a connection from the power lines to the hook that anchored the phone wire. The phone's lightning protector was missing, a piece of it was found on the back fence. The ground wire was gone, just a black line on the house where it used to be. The wire to the phone was fused together and stiff. It was a wall phone, which looked good until I snapped the cover off. The insides were melted.

In addition to that, there were two holes almost above the bed (the owners were awakened by the bolt), the TV was fried along with light bulbs and a few small appliances. They also had an electrician there, with house wiring problems.

When I leave the house, or when I go to bed, the computer is not only off, but it's unplugged. My data is too precious to leave it to chance. The odds for this happening are slim, but the penalty is too costly to ignore.

I've been in storms where there was no time lag (latency?) between the flash of light and the thunder. That tells me it hit really, really close.

I've read that rebooting the computer gets rid of useless data, but that was decades ago. I don't know if that's still appropriate.

Good advice Notes, The good thing about putting the PC into Hibernation mode is you can still unplug at the wall, but still have a fast startup in under half a minute, when you switch on again.

I would compare it to saving in a game, rather than starting the whole game over again.

A proper shutdown every week or so is a good thing too to clear all the miss-behaving gremlins as you say.

Try the Hibernation mode if you haven't already done so, to see if it makes a difference to startup time.

I always seem to learn something new about computers even though I have used for a long time now.

For anyone listening in, if Hibernate is not an option on your PC, the following link will show you how to enable it:

https://www.wikihow.com/Enable-Hibernate-Windows-11

I use Hibernate almost every time I shut down. Never sleep mode.

I have started to shut down. Any saving I can make on electricity is welcome in the UK and the monitor stays on standby if I send the PC to sleep

I was just thinking about this. For some reason, my main output audio device keeps getting changed. I'll find it, but I have to make some tests of what combination of programs causes it. In the meantime, the sure-fire solution is to restart the computer, so I just shut it down at night.

Quarter century? You're a newcomer grin. I've built all my PCs since 1983.

[Any Windows users, what I think is causing my audio driver reset is that checkbox in the Device Manager that says "Allow this program to take control of audio devices" or something like that. It's not consistent how you find that setting for all programs. I'm working on it...]

This is quite ironic, isn't it.

For years the UK government has been nagging us to turn off everything when it's not in use because "even that little red LED results in lots of wasted electricity".

Now they're encouraging us to buy electric cars that typically charge at 7.4kW overnight.

They seem to have forgotten about nagging.

I'm told we now have the most expensive energy in the world.

No, everything runs 24-7. Am not proud of this nor trying to make a point. But I DO pay the electric bill every month, and it's not bad. On the other hand, I do recycle, go for long walks and eat organic. And I don't intentionally place a demand on the AI-driven data centers. So there's that.

OK
Devil's advocate I guess

Mine uses sleep most of the time, not only for convenience but a couple other reasons
That little LED light that stays on is so minute of an energy problem. Go ahead start turning your computer off at night instead and have it reboot and tell me THAT is what saved you big $$ on your electric bill.
<grin>

There are other reasons/theories I have too, but I'm an idiot who has had the same power supply for 17 years ..

It is and I don't worry overmuch about them, though the point made by the "switch off at the wall" advocates is that the LED may use virtually nothing, but the power losses in the PSU and so on are much less insignificant.

It all pales away totally againsr 7.4kW for hours for an EV, though.

I power my PCs down. Mostly habit, but partly that if I don't force a full shift-power-down on Windows, then it leaves some data, um, unsettled and Linux, quite reasonably then declines to work with an unclean filesystem.

I also think my laptop battery lasts better if I do a full powerdown, though that might be in my head ...I've never bothered to try to prove or disprove it.

100%...using power, using water - in huge amounts and providing things as useless &/or ephemeral as NFTs were/are.
I power down everything and turn them off at the power socket too. Little red lights and the standbye power suck bother me on all appliances. The only ones that stay connected are the ones without battery supported clocks. Two years ago I had a comp fried by a lighnting strike up the road...it sent a surge along the phone line, killed the modem & the comp. It was wide spread damage - I couldn't buy a modem for about 5 day as every appliance & conp store had sold out...most of those customers didn't lose their comps as they shut down when the storm started. I was in the process of shutting down appliances starting downstairs and was too late by he time I was top side.

Cheers

For those of you who use Sleep or Hibernation on a desktop computer, does that affect the power settings for USB and PCI devices? I mentioned that if I leave my computer on a few hours, my audio output device gets reassigned! I tracked it down to the advanced power settings in Windows Device Manager affecting the driver assignment when they timed out. Everything is unfortunately set on full power now. There is more required to making a permanent fix here, but will this problem happen if I put the computer to sleep overnight?

I dunno, I turn my Audio Interface off, but put computer to sleep.
I sometimes get woken up at 3AM and have to get to work quick (emergency), so having the computer fire right up works for me.

/ I am so looking forward to retirement

SysAdmin/Programmer for a company supporting 24/7 logistics and medical services.

Somebody has to keep that stuff running and when it isn't it can get quite stressful.
A little over a year to go, if plans work, but I know I'll still get calls.

However, it becomes optional at that point.
I am mostly relied on for SQL and IIS/.NET stuff

If you dig deep into the power and USB settings, you can set a device's "sleep" individually.

Rharv, I used to teach SQL with relational database courses. Cool.

Sawmill Music, yes, power and USB settings were the problem. Thanks.

I discovered my Windows Device Manager power settings were all reset to the default on my production machine [why does it do that!]. For now, I had just turned everything on full blast and the problem went away. I am reassured it wasn't something to do with the Fender device driver or allowing a program to take exclusive control of a device. It was plain old power saving that I was sure was off. Now I can fine-tune the settings.

Ray, a lightning strike on the neighbor's tree took out all kinds of stuff - dishwasher, couple of circuit breakers in the panel, and worst, my Yamaha MIDI synth (just a week before a symphony concert for which I was making last-minute revisions to my music).

The only safe way a device is protected from a lightning strike is not attached to a power source. The high voltage and current can jump across a on/off switch with no problem.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library.
