I play a MIDI controller called a "Zendrum" (www.zendrum.com) and I plug it into an Edirol Sound Canvas (SC) module which is USB'd to my computer. The SC stereo outputs go to a mixer to which speakers are connected. I play the Zendrum through a SW package called "Battery3" by Native Instruments. Each of the 23 triggers on the Zendrum is mapped in Battery3 to a particular drum or percussion sound.
I would like to record MIDI in PT using the Battery3 sounds, but I cannot figure out how to do it or even if it's possible. I tried various combinations of selecting Roland MIDI drivers and even tried to use Battery's VST plug-in; but, since I don't know what I'm doing, I spent a lot of time fiddling around randomly to no avail.
One thing I've done in the past is to run the mixer's audio mains to the SC inputs; then, record the Zendrum as an audio device. That works, but it seems like I should be able to record it as a MIDI device also. If I close Battery3 and just use PT or BIAB, then the sounds are all wrong and not programmed to the correct triggers on the Zendrum. It seems like I need Battery3 running and having its sounds made available to PT (or BIAB or RealBand).
Can anyone suggest a technique that will allow me to utilize Battery3 and still record it as MIDI with PT?
Thanks,
Ken Bour
P.S. Sorry for double-posting, but I didn't mean to enter it in the "Wishlist" forum.

i assume zen has a midi out ?? try this. (bit unsure of your set up there. difficult without being there.) 1. zen midi out directly into midi input of pc. (or over usb.) with midi out of pc going to sound canvas. so you can hear sounds. 2. record the midi trak. 3. after recording insert battery plug in. tell me if that works. (muteing canvas). after inserting battery you might have to fiddle with some settings i suspect or remap the midi stream. for example lets say you see the midi recorded fine on the trak. and you want drum sounds from battery. but after inserting battery you hear a piano plonking along like drums. mebe battery expects the drums on a certain midi channel, so set the channel in the recorded midi trak appropriately and/or you might have to remap the midi data via the piano roll. from what i see battery has lots of drum samples. what you need to find out is...what midi note values trigger certain drum samples. ie...what midi note value triggers kik or snare or low tom etc etc. then you have to make sure that the recorded midi note values reflect this. note that the zen drum looks like to me has midi note select THUS ITS IMPORTANT I SUSPECT TO MATCH NOTE SELECTION WITH WHAT BATTERY IS EXPECTING.
what i would prolly do is hang a big sheet of paper on my studio wall with 2 columns. midi note value and corresponding sound it triggers. remember midi is different from audio. all the midi note values do on the trak is be used as a "sample trigger". the other thing you might find usefull is..within ptw is a likkle usefull utility called "midimon.exe". this allows you to get lots of deep details bout a midi data stream. there is also a utility called midi ox that might be usefull. tell me how ya get on mate.
i would also suspect youll need a pretty decent pc with a decent amount of memory and a decent processor. also dont do this stuff off the win OS drive. run a test with a dedicated hard drive..eg 7200 rpm 32 mb cache.
retired puter engr....powertracks on amd......NICE ! "what is the black art of audio engineering ?" my silly songs...motagator.com/bmanning see my tips in the tips section.
