Here’s what I did. I imported a BIAB file into Real Band. Everything played fine. Then I used the metronome settings to create a click track. That plays fine, too, except….

When I loop the end of the song, the first time the click track plays fine. But, when the click track goes back to do the next loops, it’s way off the timing.

I don’t see how something like that could happen. A click is a click. How can it change? I don’t know what could possibly throw it off.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

I gave up on 'metronome' and use a real click track these days, which does not exhibit those issues
Metronome is ancient and needs to go away IMHO.

Set up a simple MIDI click track that can be imported into any song.
I usually convert it to audio once I am confident in the tempo map

Even if tempo map changes, just re-import the MIDI click track
quick and easy with one time setup

I'm not sure which of two issues is the situation here. There is the metronome, which can have subtle digital timing issues that depend more on your computer and sound card (and possibly word clock). And then there is looping, which you mentioned, that seems to have a problem each time a song repeats. Am I correct that you are describing a problem with looping, more than the metronome?

The metronome in the program offers you the opportunity to record the metronome onto a track. That’s what I did. I ramped up the volume, so it could be heard, etc. It plays through the first time fine, and then as the repeated loop go by, it’s way off the beat.

thanks for clarifying (I'm slow sometimes)
If you already made it a track, that's weird
Unless you still have the metronome itself playing .. have you checked that?
(made sure the metronome itself is disabled, since it is on a track now)

Michael,

This is a long shot... Do you have a change in tempo near the end of the song? If so, it might be that this tempo is not getting reset to the song's starting tempo when looped.

Yes, there is a tempo change towards the end. Let’s say the song slows down from 155 to 100 for a measure. Immediately after that, the song goes back to the original 155 and ends about 6 measures later, still at 155.

You’ve just highlighted one of the main reasons I wanted to use a click track in the first place. I.E. because I’ve got to come back in playing at the moment the song returns to the original tempo. Without the click, it’s pretty impossible for me to do that. I’m rhythmically inept even at a steady tempo!

The program makes the tempo switch fine the first time through, but then as I try to polish the ending via punch-in looping, the click goes all over the place. The song loops back to the punch-in start point with the click all misaligned.

I had to manually record the ending a few times without the use of punch-in looping.

That information would have been beneficial if it was included in the original post.

I would put relevant information in. But I don’t know what’s relevant and what isn’t.

The application had no trouble readjusting tempo to the end of the song. Right on the button.

Therefore I thought the tempo change was a non-issue.

Tempo changes happen on a tempo 'map' that aligns with the song.

As a tempo change happens it sets the tempo. It doesn't change again until another tempo map change (at least using the metronome).

When it's on a track RB has a chance of looking back to check the last tempo change when it loops.
The metronome just follows whatever it was told last.

So if you changed tempo from 100 to 112 and then loop back to a spot where the tempo was once set at 100 the metronome thinks it's still 112 because nobody told it to change.
Metronome is nice for a beginner starter tempo, but always make a click track instead .. just the best advice I can give here.
Noel's long shot was the likely answer and points out a weakness in Metronome.
/it is dumb and just does what it was last told, no awareness of its surroundings

That is why it works the first time thru; it gets every message in a map as it happens linearly

MIchael,

If you can upload Realband's SEQ file to a third-party site such as Dropbox and then put a link to that file in this thread, we can download it and have a look at it. This will help us find what is causing the issue. Sometimes seeing the problem first-hand is the easiest way to resolve an issue.

Regards,

Here is a link. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fbbMBh5i8i01sVQQe26HvW_thW6cqnJf?usp=sharing

The festivities are between measure 75 and the end. Song slows down for dramatic effect, a tacet occurs, and then everything goes back to the song's default tempo which is 155. Song ends at that tempo.

Problem 1. If you are trying to "punch-in" the end via looping, say within a punch-in window from measure 70 or so through the end, the first time through, no problem. But when the loop back happens, the timing of the click track is way out of whack.

Problem 2. The click doesn't play through the tacet. Where the slowdown occurs, the click leaves you hanging. There is no timekeeping happening. And of course, my whole intent in doing this with a click is to ensure that I know when to start playing again after the tacet. But the click doesn't play during the tacet.

Here -
Added a MIDI click track and converted it to audio for you
Tracks 11 & 12 (took all of 5 minutes)
You can mute yours and the new one should play as desired.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1tR0RZEM7kJeeoY00BTuBALvqXFnWuJor?usp=sharing

If it works, save that MIDI track (11) off somewhere so you can import it again later on a different project.

Harv:

Thanks for that. I will someday figure out to write midi stuff like this myself. Could prove handy, even though I can’t play piano very well.

Thanks again.

For anyone else interested ..
This is my 'stash' click
Simple MIDI track that can be imported into any song and just works (for 100 measures)
Cut or copy for length as needed. I call it Click.MID, it even names the track CLICK in many DAWs

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GkhVxSnQ7LSJYw9VWEBx2cqrmYaIDeR8/view?usp=drive_link

No need to understand MIDI, just import to a blank track and it plays a 1/4 note side-stick on your default synth for 100 measures (a Click track), following tempo changes etc.

/Cowbell version is extra <grin>

There's a metronome?

Personally I never use the metronome. With a drum track and the count-in, I've never felt the need to use a metronome in any of my music recordings.

Even when I move it to my DAW, I simply set the tempo in the DAW and rely on the tracks for timing.

There are rare exceptions to this. For example if I have a pause for effect in the song and everything comes in at the same time after the pause/hold, timing is critical and with no reference, the metronome in the DAW is essential. But that's pretty rare and I usually only resort to the click out of desperation.

There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
