I've never had success in converting any of my files to MP3s within BIAB. Is this a possibility and what could I be doing wrong?

In the Render dialog, there is an option to save to MP3 format. You are limited to whatever MP3 codec is installed in your system, usually poor quality. WMA is probably a better option as to quality if you can use the WMA format. For my needs, I Render to a wav and then use an external MP3 converter - in my case Foobar. If you search the web for LAME MP3 converter, you will find the LAME website which has plenty of options for free frontends for converting your WAV to MP3.

The lame website is http://lame.sourceforge.net/

This has come up before:

In B&B
“Audio” -> “Burn an Audio CD” -> (Now unclick “One wave file per track” you only want one stereo track) -> “Save in other Audio format and MP3” -> then click “Yes” (B&B will first create a wav file and tell you where its located) -> Now in the new window menu that comes up set ‘format’ to “Cyberlink MPEG 1 Layer 3” and ‘Attributes’ to “ 56kbits/sec 22050 Hz Stereo 6kb/sec” from the selection – now click “Yes”

You will now have at the same location as the wav file an MP3 file that shouldn’t be bigger than a few hundred kilo bytes and be of quite good quality.
There are options for better quality if you require it.

That should work, but a 64 kbps MP3 is going to sound pretty rough... I'd personally just render to a WAV and use another program (i use iTunes) to convert it to an MP3. That way I can choose my bitrate, up to 320 kbps, which is almost indiscernible from the original WAV file. You get a pretty big file, but it sure sounds a lot better.

I'm a freak about sound quality, though. Once you hit the 192 kbps mark, most people can't tell the difference.

Thanks guys, I did figure it out. I was just helping a friend over the phone who's been having a rough time doing so. Oddly, she has a soundcard that allows bitrates of up to 320kbps on her system, so she was able to create greater quality MP3s when we were done.

Thanks for your responses.

Although I'm a newbie to BIAB, (love it) I've been using the freeware Audacity for some time and it's good at converting to a range of bitrates in MP3 or whatever. I've also been exporting my BIAB tracks into Audacity to do multi-track vocal recording. (Then correcting my warbling in Melodyne- there might be a better way than all this exporting and importing but that's my process for now)

Audacity is a free, (open-source) cross-platform digital audio editor and recording application. It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD. Great program, new version just came out.

Audacity is a wonderful thing. Not much in life is free and actually works and provides you with tools and options. The only thing I can think of was Dad's garage when he turned 60 but my younger brother got 2 of the tools I want dang it.

I guess Im still lazy about this and after arranging my song in biab and tweeking the mix here and there I record it straight on to my Roland Workstation.i then record my vocals and harmonies(if they are needed) and then mix down in stereo onto a cd or mp3.But my aim is to do this through real band including normalizing the song.cheers Frankie

I'm with tributeman on this. Doing the same thing, except recording BIAB to a stand-alone Korg recorder. I'd like to use Real Band, but am not convinced that it's as simple, quick, stable, and reliable as using a dedicated recorder---especially for overdubs and punch-ins with a foot pedal on the fly.

The dedicated units are stable, but FAAAAAAR less flexable. There is so much you can do with a program like RB as far as mixing and mastering goes. Also there is the ability to add in anything and to add effects.
