I have a new PC with Windows 7 and want to purchase the 2010 BIAB, but I have noticed lots of talk on forums about Windows 7 being poorly equipped for midi ( technical stuff about not being able to select midi output drivers etc - don't understand any of it !)
I don't want to connect any external devices or do anything sophisticated - just create backing tracks in BIAB to use for instrumental teaching. Can anyone assure me that this will be fine in Windows 7 ?

It should work fine. The problem is Windows 7 64-bit isn't compatible with a lot of older hardware items (and some software). I just recently purchased a nice, new, fast computer and knew that doing that would cause me to have to replace my aging interface, because Edirol didn't update the drivers. (Now I'm an M-Audio ProFire 610 man.) If you don't have that problem, then you should be fine.
I installed BIAB, PT, and RB and they seem to be running fine for me. I haven't tried recording vocals, yet, so maybe I shouldn't say that...

DWS, welcome to the forum.
Windows 7 works very well with MIDi and with BIAB.
What you probably have been reading is the caution that you need to make sure there are Windows 7 drivers for whatever sound card, synth, etc. you want to use. This is almost not a problem anymore, a year after Windows 7 was introduced as a release candidate. There are a few vendor holdouts, particularly for the 64-bit version of Windows 7, but the situation gets better as time goes on. Tell us what your system is and we can be more specific. If you don't have any external devices, then you probably have the standard RealTek soundcard built in to the motherboard. While that's not the path to the finest sound, it should work fine for BIAB.

Yes, it is just a standard domestic system right out the box and it does appear to have a RealTek soundcard.
I am not bothered about high quality audio, just good enough for teaching.

Will this work okay ? Does Windows 7 have inbuilt synth software for generating midi sounds ?
Also, is it still possible to import midi files into the soloist and melodist channels ? I had an old version of BIAB that used to do that years ago.

You'll want to use the Coyote WT synth that is included for free. Windows does come with a synth, but this one is a midi synth that PGMusic assembled for Win7 64 bit. Uses the same sounds that normal windows uses, but in a nice reliable interface.
Not sure about importing midi into melodist, but by using RealBand you can import midi to any track you want.
A lot of people start the song in BiaB to get the backing tracks done, then open the song in RB to finish up.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

DWS, although the RealTek will work, if you can afford to add a decent soundcard for the cost of giving a few lessons, please consider doing so. The better the sound quality you can give them, the more your students will be inspired.

I have a Win7 64 bit with RealTek and X-Fi Xpress Express PCI soundcards all working well with BIAB2010
As stated you will get good enough results for your use with CoyoteWT and also the Coyote Forte DXi - which can be purchased from the site
