As a result of recent negative publicity, and tips from Facebook users, I just checked my privacy settings last weekend. I could swear some settings were changed from the way I had left them, plus there are many new options that unfortunately default to the most public choice. Bad business. That means you can never trust it; you must be constantly vigilant, which adds to the waste of time Facebook often is.

Just remember, there's nothing "free" about any "free" service. Lame advertisements don't pay the bills. They're going to get something from you. Your personal information is of great value. You have to protect it vigilantly.

I closed my Facebook account a while back. Then I decided to create a new one. Told me my email was already in use. I logged in just like before I closed the acount and nothing had changed!
Either they don't REALLY close your account, or I somehow didn't get it closed. They make it difficult. You have to give them a reason then try to decipher one of those little pictures and type it in. I hate those things.
But I'm back to using FB a little now. I change my info often. I've had all kinds of jobs. Lived all over the world. Been 18-102 years old.

Yeah, exactly. Why should I even consider this piece of crap again? My daughter and other friends send me or rather Facebook does, emails telling me I have friends who want to contact me. Right. That's why I already have their personal emails and I tell any and everybody to not put my name on anything.

There is lot of Facebook users who set privacity setup to let personal and familiar pics be of free access to everyone, even not friends. Not a safe procedure by the way.

No, they never really close your account, just take it off line. I guess they're hoping you'll change your mind and reclaim it eventually, contacts and info intact.
Since I use FB essentially for self-promotion I don't see any sense in hiding anything from anybody. I wouldn't be there otherwise -- in fact, I held off from joining for a long time simply because so much info was hidden from people browsing through.
