This is new to me so I need some basic advice. I just bought a software piano, the Galaxy Vintage D piano software. I have a separate HDD for the samples. So should I install the software on a different computer or on the same computer as PTP? If on a different computer, how do I connect them together to allow the PTP software to control the piano software? And I really don't understand the whole VSTi thing. Is there a tutorial or site where I can go to learn how it all connects together?/

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

There are a few ways to do this.

If the piano software is a large program and you want it on another computer, then you could use MIDI cables between the two computers to have one 'play' the other and use an audio cable back from the piano computer to the line in of the recording computer.

Much easier to try installing on the same system and see how it runs.
Install the piano software, remember where you install it.
In PTP select a MIDI track
Click the arrow to the left of the track name (in the main Tracks window) and cleck edit VSTi
In the resulting window is a box with the name of the track and four empty dropdown slots below the name.

Use the first (top one of the four) dropdown and scroll all the way to the bottom and select 'add VSTi'.
Find your already installed piano software, you'll need the .dll file or an .ax file. Most likely the .dll file.
Click OK
Now the information (or notes) on that track will play thru the new piano.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

On the Galaxy pianos forum, they also suggested that I try to install the piano on the same computer. The piano uses the Kontakt player. I will have the samples on a separate drive, 7200rpm. It was also suggested that I run it as a VSTi instrument.

Hopefully, I will have time next week to play around with it. Keep those suggestions coming and I will keep reading more in the forum to learn how to do what I need to do.

Thanks,

it might help if you post your puter details etc.
ram level, processor type, and important is how much
cache in your 7200 rpm drive.
I RECOMMEND 32 mb cache for budget.
cos mate some plug ins and sample players can be
very demanding on puter resources.
particularly running multiple instances.
some people run 3 drives.
one for OS(win), one to record to and one for samples.
(read my tips sometime in the tips n trocks section
if you have time.)

The computer is a Sony Vaio, p8400 duo 2.26 with 3g ram

Yes, I was thinking about a second external drive for the recording project files. That needs to be a fast drive also.

Don,
Is that a Yamaha HX-1 in your avatar?

Are you using that?

Yes it is. I use the HX-1 with MidiTzer and eventually, with Hauptwerk. I just haven't downloaded and installed the hauptwerk software yet. It works great with virtual organ software. If you are close to Dallas in June, we are having a silent movie using the MidiTzer (or Hauptwerk) for the score. If you are interested, some of our videos are at Dallas Organ Society and at my YouTube page.

The piano and organ sampled software has improved by leaps and bounds in the past two or three years. I just received the Galaxy Vintage D software piano today and will install it as soon as I decide which external hard drive to use for the piano samples. Glad to know I can just use it with PTP as a plug-in.

UPDATE: I just ordered a MyDigitalSSD High Speed 32GB ExpressCard/34 SSD Solid State Disk from Amazon. It does use the PCI Express interface instead of USB. First, I will install the piano software then install the samples on this card.

Even if it doesn't work, I can always use it for extra storage or it might work for the PTP project storage. After I experiment, I will post how it worked for the piano.

I am totally lost. I clicked on the "add VSTi" button. But I have no idea where the .dll file is or which one I need. The software plays through the Native Instruments Kontack player. I don't know if I need the dll from there or from the sample library. But this sure ain't easy! Any suggestions?

UPDATE EDIT:
I found the vsti dll in a folder. I finally got a sampled piano playing. Now the problem is finding a way to change the instrument that is playing, to use the Kontact control panel to adjust the settings on the piano.

Glad you got it working, I can't help you any farther than that; I have never used the kontact plugin.
Hopefully someone else here will jump in.

It is a little confusing to me because it seems to have too many steps. But since I have never really used plug in instruments before, perhaps it is supposed to have that many steps.

DIRECTIONS?? You mean i was supposed to read the directions?

Every time I change a song in PTP, I have to reload the samples/plug-in. I suppose that is the way it should be, since every tune would have different instruments and different layout. But for this project, I am using only one instrument with one midi track per song.

Anyway, it seems to be doing the job to this point. Eventually, I will have to render all of this to actual audio for CD mastering. But don't worry, I will have a bunch of questions then if I haven't read enough and figured it out by then.

Thanks for the help!

Most VSTi's (not all) will remember the setup if saved with the seq file. Maybe kontact doesn't, but if not you should be able to save a preset so it is easy to set up.

In the VSTi window, try 'save preset' or 'save group'. I have started using save group more often, as it works sometimes when others don't. Then after opening song, use load group to get the exact same setup going.

Once the VSTi dll file has been loaded, it should appear in the dropdown list of available synths as long as you do not move the dll file. So you would load the synth, load the group and be good to go (hopefully).

I am surprised the kontact player does not load with the seq file, or does it load but just not set up properly? If so it probably has it's own ini file that runs at startup, and using the preset or group would be required. Now that I think of it, since it is a sample player it probably does load up it's own default samples at startup, so at least now you know how to try to shorten the steps needed.

Well, here we are, three years later. I upgraded to PTP 12 and have been trying to get this thing to recognize the Kontakt VSI instruments for four hours. Tried what worked before. No luck.

I would really like to get this working because I like PTP. But if it won't recognize the instruments, then I don't know what to do.

Any suggestions?
