...but not quite there yet. I welcome other solutions. Here's where I am now. I'm using biab to generate a guitar sound to the guitar input on a Digitech Vocalist Pro. I have a bose L1 PA now so I only need one channel for the main output, since it is not stereo. I set biab to output all but the guitar channel to the right side (master out). The guitar goes to the left side (or center if I want it to also sound in the mix) which I input to the guitar input on the Vocalist Pro and the "Music IQ" picks up the chords fairly well for the harmonies, but not real stable. I find that simple realtrack guitar styles work OK, but not the more complicated comping styles which cause the vocalist to fish around for the harmonies. Is there a way to add a midi guitar track to a Realtracks style? I could make a straight strumming style that would be silent in the mix and work with almost everything. (the drawback to that would be losing some good realtrack guitar sounds) Of course the best thing would be to have biab output a midi track, like it's designed to do, that will run silently along side of my Realtracks, but I've never came up with a solution to accomplish that. It's so frustrating that I haven't used my harmonizer since switching to all realtracks over a year ago.

I would never go all RTs there is just not a perfect one for every situation. Have biab make a nice midi piano track and have that feed the vocalist and it should work let the piano track play quietly in the background

Look in the Prefs for "Output Chords" and there you can set the thing up to output chords on a channel you select, no matter if a song is all realtracks or MIDI or what.

Set up your harmony device to receive only on that same MIDI channel.

Thanks guys. I'll work on it again this evening. Mac, I was under the impression that the "Output Chords" option in the preferences didn't work when using realtracks. I'll give it another try - if it works, that will solve everything.

Setting the chord output channel doesn't seem to work. I'm using a usb straight from the Vocalist Live Pro to my computer but it doesn't seem to receive a signal from biab. I've made sure the channels are the same on both units and also tried different channels. I'm using Windows 7 and the latest version (299) of biab. In order to use midi sounds with this setup I have to use the CoyoteWT setting. I've also disabled that but it still didn't receive the midi signal. I'm surprised there aren't more people with a system similar to mine haven't figured this out yet. I'm getting discouraged again...

I don't have a Digitech but the VoiceLive. I did it this way.

1. I use Band in a Box..so I use the Soloist Channel, you'd need a midi channel.
2. Setup to output chords on Midi ch 5.
3. Set your track to Midi ch 5.
4. Set your device to Midi ch 5.
5. Set volumes to about 2 or so.

When I go into the thing and press f5 in band in a box I can send a patch to the soloist channel, ie 32, and 3.2 patch latches on my box. Note that Band in a Box has a function to set up the vocalist.

**If you have chords typed on the Chord Grid, then Output Chords should work regardless of the track type.

I do have chords typed in, and have tried using the soloist, and through tracks, and the biab vocalist setup procedure. None send the midi signal to my processor, which is set to receive channel 5. I've even tried songs that only have midi. Perhaps it's because I have two usb connections: 1 from laptop to Bose L1, and the other from laptop to the digitech Vocalist Live Pro. The Midi Output driver is set to the Vocalist Pro and I have the Use VST/DXi Synth checked and set to (CoyoteWT) for midi. Audio Setting (MME) is to the Bose L1 for usb audio out. Still stumped...

I have the same bose L1 and VoiceLive.

I just did the following:

1. Go into Opts Setup Output Channel.
2. Check the box for Vocalist.
3. Ensure that it says Midi 5.
Close box.
4. Open the Channels in Opts Prefs and ensure that Midi 5 is assigned to the soloist channel. I now don't use that channel, only to embed cc controls.
5. Close that.
6. Set your Midi Voice Controller to receive Ch 5, that should be all she wrote.

With my setup as soon as I press play the midi light begins to flash on my voicelive, and I can see the chords. Note if you have a chord dispay it may be relative, for example you expect to see a D chord but see a C# chord instead, this is normal as far as relatives being weird goes.

Later you can check through the patches in your book and charge harmonies. I usually have one that thickens my voice and start with that say, 3.6 so at the first bar of the song I press F5 and enter instrument 36 which is some kinda guitar. But if you watch it will change the harmony patch. At least for me. If later you want to have the song do it on autopilot that works too...

Thanks John, I'm finally getting some live harmonies. I used the settings exactly as you said and it does work but with the following reservations:
1. I have to uncheck the DXI box or it will not send midi on any channel, so I loose any songs that require a midi instrument in the mix, although on those tunes I can record a wave of th using the DXI synth setting, then open it in biab, tweak it and save it. Then it will play as a .wav and I can hear the midi parts when DXI is unchecked (a minor hassle).
2. The chord output doesn't seem to be all that accurate many of the times (strange harmonies - even with "just triads and 7th's selected).
3. It seems I have to re-enter the soloist track instrument setting each time I open a song (doesn't keep the default mysetup.DK when changing songs. Hopefully I'll figure that one out.
4. Each time I change songs, it changes the selection on the vocalist. If I fix that on the vocalist (set to not receive patch changes) or set biab to not send patch changes, I loose the harmonies. Another puzzle to figure out.

I just wish the biab techies would get involved and come up with a good fix for this. There are many of us that play live and want this option and still want to use the latest biab technology (i.e. realtracks audiophile) with the latest computer stuff (windows 7)...

Thanks to everyone who came to my aid on this.

1. I always press F5 and put in the harmony setting I want for every new song and add a * or some such notation to the songname.

2. I don't have a problem with strange harmonies, maybe take some simple country song with a few chord changes and watch and see what happens.
Should give you a clue.

3. There is a setting for saving the settings each time, I'm in the hospital and just have my netbook so can't point you the right way there but I set the Soloist for something and it sticks so it's do able.

4. I'm wondering about the digitech forums, any help over there?

5. Did you get this from PG music? One reason I got the voicelive, hoping for better support.

Keep plugging.

John, you're in the hospital? I hope you're just visiting. If not, get off the forum and get well! (I heard you Canadians were a tough lot). Thanks for all your help. I'll see if I can dig up a digitech forum -- great advice. I looked at your voicelive on YouTube and it sounds great. I was also impressed with their new smaller boxes "harmony-m" and "voicetone correct" - really good stuff. I still say the PG Music should step up to the plate and make interfacing with these tools much easier. Maybe T.C. Helicon and Digitech should send them their harmonizers for research - it might even help their sales.

I'm in the hospital, rather be in Hawaii. Last Cancer treatment didn't sit well, still isn't. Was hoping to be home tomorrow, but I guess not.

I thought I the doc said 'You're a cancer' and that's true. Turned out not so funny. Lee from there who hangs out here went through the same thing, hope my outcome is as good as they are preaching. Time will tell.

Finally gave up on biab providing midi (with dxi checked). It doesn't work. So I'm using the music i.q. on my vocalist live pro to get the harmony (hard to do when I'm playing trumpet ;-) I'll probably bring up the subject in a few months again.

There is a button for Midi Monitor. To set my system up I used that, set it to show me what was on Ch 5 only, and troubleshot the thing from that perspective.

What it does is show you every midi command going out on Ch5.

If you set up the box to send on 5, you should see the chord going in terms of 3 notes if you selected that option, and some on off stuff is all. Once you are sure that is happening it's a cable and set box to receive issue.

Very simple in the end. Don't give up yet. \

In looking for the button it's on the bottom row I think, click the arrows and look for the Midi and some green marbles.

Then set the filter or there will be too much data.

That should take 30 seconds to confirm you are getting output. Actually it's good if you have a device to allow you to see visually that you cable is right, that way you get flashing or output at the other end. Many midi cables are confusing to say the least. If you get output on 5 but no chords, switch the cable around and try again.
