I know this might be one of the most curious posting you have ever read, but here`s the story:

My father, who is American but has an Austrian mother, went to roam the world 7 months before I was born. So I never got to meet him. I always thought he didn`t take his responsibilities. I found him on facebook 5 months ago. He lives in Arizona. It turned out that he didn`t know of my existence and was very pleased of having another child. We are getting along phantasically.

I wrote him a song for Fathers Day. It seems that he passed on his musical abilities to me, since my mother is more into painting, but totally unmusical. So I thought he might like to have his own song. Here it is:

"You And Me": http://www.sandrasherman.com/media/you-and-me.mp3

It`s in the Gypsy style, which I have been into a lot recently. As usual I recorded everything in my living room. The only thing that came from BB are the brush drums.

Enjoy! He was thrilled ;-))

That is indeed quite a story. How nice for you two to reunite. And, very nice song.

Will there be a trip for you to the US? Arizona is hot as heck.

Hi Sandra,

WOW!!!!!! What a song! What a story! This composition was just brilliant to listen to. Your skills are amazing and leave me speechless.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I would never have believed that this was recorded in a living a room. The sound is studio quality all the way.

sandra, in a word - phenomenal! i too hear grisman in your picking. he merges jass with bluegrass and i heard that throughout your piece and done beautifully, i might add.

arizona may well be the rattlesnake capital of the civilized world so bring along a bottle of vienese schnapps und a tin of snoose (chewing tobacco). survivors say that they'll flee from you if hit in the eyes with snoose juice. the schnapps will give you something to do while waiting for the hearse to pick up your friend who couldn't spit straight.

Sandra,

I have been a fan of your music since day one, but now I have something else to congratulate you on and that's the on going relationship with your father . . . so congrats and my best to both of you.

He must really be proud to find he has a talented daughter like you.

That's mighty impressive playing. I like that style of music a lot even though I don't play it at all. Pretty cool story, too.

Thank you all guys for your very kind words. They touched me.
Yes, I guess I have to overcome my flight fears and go there. My niece says they have 119F (48C) there right now. Sounds cozy and warm ;-)) He`s gonna come to Vienna next year. And yes, he`s proud that I make music for a living. He always wanted to do that but went to the Navy for 22 years.

It`s odd enough that he is still alive after all that he experienced including the survival of a brain tumor two years ago). Seems the supreme being wanted us to finally meet.

We found out that we have so many things in common even though we`ve never met. Behaviour that I cannot have learned by watching. So strange. I`m happy as a pig in the mud.

Thanks for the playing compliments too. I`m new to Sinti Jazz (Gypsy) but trying my best.

Sandra

Hi Sandra,
Great story and song. What guitar are you using? To my ears, that's a really good sound you're getting. And as others have stated, your playing is very impressive indeed. Best wishes, and thanks for sharing.

That`s a "Volkert" Custom handmade Gypsyguitar. He`s one of the best Gypsy Guitar Luthiers worldwide. Gypsyguitars usually sound very agressive, much attack, no sustain (intentionally) and very loud. They have to be used with special silk-strings and special Gypsypicks about 3.5mm strong and rounded at the edges. That`s where that sound comes from.

I recorded this guitar with a regular AKG C2000 condenser mic (small membrane). The Upright bass was recorded with a condenser mic (big membrane) right under the bridge of the bass (stuck on the instrument).

I used alittle bit of compression for all the instruments except the drums and a multiband Compressor on the master. A little reverb on the guitars. That`s it. I tend to not overdo things. Keep the mix simple.

Hey Sandra,

Wonderful story with you and your dad. The Internet sure can have an enormous impact on ones personal life!

As for the song: absolutely brilliant! I loved it very much. Great playing, well arranged and you did a splendid job on the producing. Congratulations. If you would've mixed this song in with a couple of songs by the Rosenberg Trio, no-one would have picked out your song. You should be at the Samois Festival (France) next year!

Great job!
