Having upgraded to 2010.5 USB (UltraPlusPAK Upgrade (Hard Drive Version)), the program is configured as follows (D is internal hard drive, E is PGMusic USB drive):
BIAB D:\bb
RealTracks sets in E:\bb\RealTracks\
RealDrums sets in E:\bb\Drums\

Question: Can I now delete with no loss:
D:\bb\RealTracks
D:\bb\RealTracks - Demos
D:\bb\Drums
D:\bb\Drums - Demos

If so, can I safely delete any other subfolders of D:\bb that also appear in USB?

Thanks.

Hi Law Tunes,

From what you say, it looks as though you can delete d:\realtracks (+ demos) and d:\realdrums (+demos). I'd take a couple of precautions, though, just in case problems arise.

What I would do in your situation is to rename all the above d:\ folders (say realtracks.old, realdrums.old, etc.). Once they are renamed, BIAB/RB will no longer be able to access these directories. Next time you run BIAB and load in some Realtracks, you will soon find out if BIAB is looking for these directories as errors will occur. If after a couple of days, BIAB and RB are running smoothly, it would indicate that all you need is indeed on the USB drive. (As a precaution, I suggest that you get hold of another USB drive and back-up all BIAB/RB files because once you start using the USB drive as your source, Realtrack and -drum files are only in a single location and if anything should happen.... )

Regards,
Noel

I assume you're running out of space internally. Yea delete those things if you need to. Make sure you have a complete back up though of everything just sitting on a drive that lives in the closet.

No, do not delete those folders!

Look in those /Drums and /RealTracks folders on your drive D. In my setup, there are two files in each: a zero byte file (AudioPhileVersion.txt) that says I have the audiophile version, and a tiny text file (AboutDrumsFolder.txt and AboutRealTracksFolder.txt). The RealTracks folder file says this:

This folder is used to store the RealTracks audio files.

If this folder is empty, either you haven't installed any RealTracks, or you are using a RealTracks folder location outside of the bb folder (i.e. different from the default RealTracks folder location).

If you are using a different location for your RealTracks files, you need to specify it in the RealTracks Settings dialog in Band-in-a-Box.

Similar message for the Drums folder.

So, if you have just these one or two files in each folder, leave them, and leave the folders.

If you have actual files there, yes, you could delete the files except for those mentioned above. That would mean you must have first installed your RealTracks and RealDrums to Drive D:.

Matt,
Interesting!
Would he be better off just deleting the whole bb folder and doing a reinstall with the option to put the programs on his D drive and leave all the Real stuff on the USB drive. I think I would do that unless you have some real elaborate settings and a bunch of 3rd party styles etc. Then you need to plan for that.

But as you said . . . you'd better have a backup of the program if you're going to setup to run on the USB.

If you want the "demos" gone, then they will fit on a backup DVD with no problem, but as Matt suggested, leave the little files in place. As Noel suggested, I'd leave the directories (they take next to no room by themselves), or as Noel suggested, and I sometimes do, I rename them adding an X_ in front so that they drop to the bottom of the directory list and are out of the way but are visible on the tree but easy to find if ever needed.

John, certainly he could reinstall, but would that delete the RealTracks and Drums files in the folders on drive D:, or just ignore them?

It's possible also that the program might even recreate those folders if they were deleted.

However, on the assumption that the two folders might be useful to tell the program where the Real Tracks and Real Drums actually are, I think it's easiest to leave them, and just do a block delete of everything else inside them that is not needed. [At least, until we hear otherwise from Peter, Andrew or Kent.]

Matt,
I guess my thoughts about doing a reinstall was to minimize what's on his D drive with going inti uncharted waters. As you said you never know what little file you might delete that causes some weirdness to happen. Twas me I'd either do a complete reinstall using the option"install program to D drive & leave real tracks on usb drive" or I'd just leave it alone. At least in either case it would be a legitimate install as intended by PG

That makes sense.

With 35 years in computer science, I'm comfortable making changes all over (keeping backups, of course) but perhaps others should not follow my lead.

D:\bb\Drums
D:\bb\Drums - Demos

If so, can I safely delete any other subfolders of D:\bb that also appear in USB?

I think that others have already covered this, but just in case - the answer is NO. If you are running Band-in-a-Box from your D: drive, but have the RealTracks and Drums on your E: drive, then only folders on your E: drive that Band-in-a-Box is concerned about, are the folders E:\bb\RealTracks and E:\bb\Drums. For all other folders, including "RealTracks - Demos" and "Drums - Demos", Band-in-a-Box is looking in D:\bb. The reason for this, is that the RealTracks and Drums folders are much larger than all other bb folders combined, so we need to allow them to be stored in a different location.

What you should do instead is:

1. (optional) On your D: drive (internal), go into the RealTracks folder and delete all of the subfolders in there. Go into the Drums folder and delete all the subfolders in there as well. As suggested you might want to back them up beforehand, just in case something is not as you expect.

2. Run the Band-in-a-Box Setup installer on the 2010.5 UltraPlusPAK hard drive, and choose option #2. Install to D:\bb.
