It came out last year. There's Harmony Evo and also Harmony EFX. I saw one youtube video and so far could find only 3 short reviews on some music store site. It's $200 and $100 respectively plus the cost of an iLok which is good price I think if the sound is realistic. Anybody tried it?

For $300 i can get a digitech VCS 3 or something like that and not deal with a ILOK

I've never used an iLok, so I'm assuming that's not good. Mainly I'm just curious if any software has caught up sound wise with the hardware that's available.

It seems a lot of the hardware you must play a guitar through it to work which I don't want to have to do. Probably just end up singing all the parts myself like I've always done. grin.

But there's a free trial of the software so I'm going to test it out just to see how it sounds - if I can figure out how to use it.

This one accept midi input , and also CC input so One could program it to come on at any point in a song and feed it with a midi track for the harmony. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pro...ssor?sku=580443

Thanks for the tip Robh. I'm going to try some hardware stuff but right now the free trial is too tempting not to try - no iLok required for the demo.

Yesterday I started the 10 day free trial of Antares Harmony Engine Evo. The jury is still out but I'm having a lot of fun exploring. I tried the duet setting on a vocal I already had recorded in RB and set my duet partner for an octave below then adjusted "his" throat and the sound was pretty cool and not overly robotic.

In an uptempo track using more harmony voices the robotica was more apparent. grin. I dl'd the pdf manual. Nine days to go it'll be fun to see how human I can get it to sound. I haven't tried the midi controls yet. The choir is nice.

It works as a VST in RB just fine as an insert haven't tried any fancy routing because I don't know how yet.

Sundance,
I posted this in the tips section but I'll put it here. If you've done much real harmony I'm sure you're aware that when you sing your part you don't use your full unique voice with all of it's nuances. I f you apply a vocal harmony processor using the lead vocal that's exactly what you'll get. Try this. Sing the lead vocal as if it were a harmony part,at least in the ares were harmony will be used, using more of a generic breathy voice. Then apply the processor. Delete the lead vocal and do it as normal. Big difference.
Let me know what you think. Of course this won't work live but in a live situation it's not as apparent.

Good tip John.

Robh, there's another program I want to try in comparison - Mu Technologies Mu Voice which unfortunately also requires an iLok. Have you tried it?

Same here. I have sworn off the Antares company too.

I purchased a product electronically but was not given a link to download it. I wrote emails on a weekly basis to get that link and no-one bothered to reply to any of my emails. In the end, after six frustrating weeks of writing emails, I wrote to the editor of their online publication (I had this link because I had signed up to receive advertising), explained my problem, and asked him/her to forward my email to an appropriate person. The problem was then solved in a few days. Never again will I buy from Antares.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks Trax and Noel. That's good to know. I don't like Harmony Engine well enough to buy it anyway. The interface takes up the whole screen, I don't like the layout, and I haven't figured out how to get it to do anything other than play as an effect insert in RB. The voices are decent if you start with a really clean track. I can see where it could be quite flexible for someone into vocal arranging with the right DAW, the patience to diddle with it and of course trust the company.

I'm going to try the Mu Voice. They have a great demo on youtube so I'm curious.

I own them both -- bought Harmony EFX, then upgraded to Harmony Engine EVO when Antares briefly offered a special price on the upgrade. I'm just getting started with Harmony Engine EVO (using the Audio Units version with Logic Pro) but so far, I'm impressed with the sound and capabilities. Previously I'd tried an older Digitech hardware unit, the TC Helicon Harmonizer that shipped with Windows BIAB, and Melodyne's Celemony (which I like for pitch correction, but creating three-part harmony in Melodyne is not quick or easy, whatever the YouTube videos say). Yes, I don't like the Ilok, and setting it up and installing the requisite software, especially on several different CPUs, can be a bit frustrating (had several freezes and/or crashes along the way, and the copy protection scheme caused me some initial problems with other programs as well.) But now that everything is running, Harmony Engine EVO gives me the best results of any harmonizing option I've tried so far, in the least amount of time. A review of the Antares Avox2 bundle in the Dec. 2008 issue of Sound on Sound (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct08/articles/avox_2.htm) said the Antares Harmony engine (included in the bundle) is "about as good as it currently gets for automated backing vocal generation." That pretty much sums it up -- bearing in mind that "as good as it gets" still isn't great, but good enough in a lot of cases. I'd have been quite happy with Harmony EFX (same sound engine) if the upgrade hadn't been cheap, and I see the EFX version is now available online (from BHPhoto, GuitarCenter, and others) for $49 -- of course, you'll also need the unfortunate Ilok (about another $40) if you don't already have one.

I think it's a shame that it doesn't work right - at least I couldn't get it work right - in more DAWS. I tried using it in both RB and Reaper. It does have good sound and lots of neat features. I really liked being able to change the gender of the voices. They should make it more compatible and easy to use.

Josie,
do you not like the TC helcion in PT or do you need real time processing?

John,
I've only used it with BB and it doesn't sound real enough for me. Also since it's not a feature in RB it's kind of a pain to use if you don't have PT which I don't.

I'm used to singing all the parts myself - it's just time consuming - so I'm real picky.
The Harmony Evo (software) and the T.C. Helicon Harmony M (hardware) sound way WAY more natural and real. The difference is amazing.

Check out this demo.

PITB,

forum rules forbid inflammatory posts. The post above serves no purpose except to inflame. It is possible to express opinions without being inflammatory; but the recurring theme in your communication style seems to be pushing people's buttons for the sole purpose of getting a reaction. That is highly undesirable in a forum where people are trying their best to respect and support the company that foots the bill for the forum we enjoy.

You clearly have insights to offer. People here respect insights unless they are served with a topping of sarcasm. The use of sarcasm undermines credibility because sarcasm is generally regarded as the protest of the weak. People who use it risk unconsciously identifying themselves to others as being insecure and out of control.

I suggest you abandon the sarcasm and let your musical insights stand on their own two feet. Based on what I've seen so far, you can hold your own if you just stop baiting people.

Not at all. It's called a joke.

I like Sundance, anybody who has been reading the posts will get it.

Not inflammatory in the least.
