I was just in another forum and a guy was telling me that he used to play drums but was now a keyboard player. I told that I had known more than a handful of drummers that did that. Then I got to thinking, I can't recollect anyone that played guitar, bass, keyboard, etc. that ever switched to drums.

Funny thread.

Actually, I have worked with one, Greg Chesson. He was an excellent pianist who filled in on drums one day in a big band. He went on to play drums on tour with Woody Herman. Of course, he was still a pianist, but is more known for being a drummer. Greg then changed careers to become a software engineer. I met him in college where we formed a jazz group (and went to the finals of the American College Jazz Festival).

The piano is indeed a percussion instrument.

The legendary Art Blakey was a piano player who switched to drums.

You just never know sometimes who you're working with especially here in LA or Matt living in New York. There's a ton of very talented people around here. At least 10 years ago I did some gigs with a really good drummer over a period of months who at a rehearsal came over to my keyboard to show me a Chick Corea part I was having trouble with. He just ripped it out and I could tell in 5 seconds he was a better player than I was. it was the only time he did this and I had no idea. He told me later he does just as many gigs as a keyboard player as he does as a drummer. It was a humbling experience.

I used to play in a band with a percussionist. He played nothing but drums in our band, but during some post-graduate studies he entered a marimba contest and won. We tried to get him to bring his vibraphone to the gig, but he just wanted to play drums in the band.

I started on drums and switched to saxophone early on. I still enjoy playing drums every once in a while, and also enjoy inputting drum beats while writing styles using a MIDI percussion controller, but I'd never want to give up the more melodic instruments like sax, guitar, flute and synthesizers.

There's an excellent guiat player over here named Bob Jones who played with the "WE Five" back in the day. He switches between the guitar and the drums and plays both equally well. Aaron Loo, a friend of mine, went to Berklee as a pianist but switched to drums and played with Michael Paulo and the LA Express for a while. He switches back and forth pretty effortlessly too. Talented guys, both of them.
