Sure you can play the chords in from a midi keyboard.

Robh is generally pretty serious, and his answer while probably correct appearent didn't answer your question, so I think he may need a little more clarity about your question.

Let me give it a try. We are obviously talking RB since we are in the RB section. Here is what I know about the question:

The first 8 tracks are reserved for BIAB and these tracks follow the Chord chart which is typed in,or input from a midi file, or from the chord recognitions feature, but you can not "play" these chords into this chart directly. Now you can certainly arm any other track and directly record in the midi info from your keyboard - just like you record audio data. But this will not change the Chord Chart which drives BIAB.

Now I may be all wrong here, but I think we are off and running.

BIAB – 2026, Reaper (current), i7-12700F Processor, 32GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM, Motu Audio Express 6x6 - My SoundCloud.

So unlike BIAB wher you can play the chord on the midi keyboard
and press control and enter on the computer keyboard, RB doesn't
allow such means for chord entry?

Thanks again for quick response.

I never knew you could do that in BIAB, but you are indeed correct (I just confirmed, ...very neat), but alas, it does not do the same in RB? Maybe needs to go to the wish list.

Popeye,

if you insult the people who offer you help, it won't be long before nobody offers you any help.

Just a thought.

Pat,
if you read over the thread you will see the first response offered
from Rob was not helpful but rather insulting itself.
For that matter it was not only unhelpful info but wrong.
That's O.K.

I was not being rude or insulting, i was being concise, as far as the information I was reading. You ask "Is it not possible to enter chords via midi keyboard?" That is not much to go on but the answer is yes you can play chords on a midi keyboard and record them RB is a sequencer. "You then said 11 views and not one suggestion... Anyone willing to help out a noob? "

The people here are users not staff, so they will help if you are patient with them, some like me probably were a tad confused by the question. I can see now that you wanted to know if a keyboard would place the chords into the chords window, hence the word "enter" I. I took it to mean enter into the program, which is what i answered.

If I misread you then i apologize, but part of my "shortness" with the answer was that you expect immediate results, and your second post could easily have been mistaken for being a tad rude yourself.

Look at it this way in your first post you were let's say, less that clear, and in less than one and a half hours you stated that no one wanted to help, that is first off impatient, and kind of rude. If 11 people come by and so far no one either knows the answer, or is clear on the question, then you need to wait patiently. You then answer back to me with an attitude, so really who is being insulting and rude, me who was unclear with your question or you who responded with 'tude?

Anyway I am glad you got the answer, and i hope you enjoy the program. Welcome to the forum, and i once again apologize for the post. I will try to be more helpful in the future. Rob

Now go eat your spinich! Oh Olive uck uck uck!

1) it's true that the question was posted in the RB forum, and the reply was wrong for RB.. but his answer would work in BIAB. It is easy to get mixed up about which forum you are in when answering questions.

2) ENTHUSIAST, EXPERT , JOURNEYMAN etc (the titles appearing after posters' names) are based on how many posts a person has made. It has no significance of anyone's level of expertise. However, someone who has been here long enough to make 3,000 posts probably knows a thing or two about the software

3) I didn't see Rob's post as insulting. Here's why: In a forum, especially when answering a post by a new forum member, you have no idea what the other person's proficiency level is. Most people assume enough proficiency that they can make a general suggestion and the person can follow up by reading the docs or experimenting. But some people actually get offended if you specify each step, while others get offended if you offer too little information. What works is for people to keep restating the question patiently and without criticism until it is understood by the group how the question needs to be answered.

The final point is that nobody here gets paid to answer questions. We are all users, not employees. It is a free exchange, driven by trust and good will. If you undermine the good will with sarcasm, others will notice, and they won't stick their necks out to offer help. It's like a dog that bites the hand that feeds it. No more food.

Yeah, I was on a different page i guess. I was thinking playing in a chord manually would enter that chord into the track. I was not trying to be a jerk. The question was short and i made the answer short.

I guess after a long time of offering suggestions here and over at Cakewalk MC forums, maybe in retrospect I was being somewhat short with you, Mr. Popeye. Sorry dude i was really answering the question as I saw it. One thing I can say is that asking the question is not always that easy either, so we should all be as patient as Mr. Marr is above.

One thing that is frustrating to forum regulars is that about once or twice a month someone comes in and starts blasting away at either the software, the helpers, or the forum in general. It gets kind of old, so any sniff of an attitude is not met well with.

Anyway i do offer my apology for any misunderstanding. It can be frustrating when you so badly want an answer to a burning question that is holding up a process at that moment. After all when we carve out the time to work on a project that time is limited, and precious.

In my best Whimpey voice " I'd gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today"

If you were to open up a new project in RB set the tempo of the song and play your keyboard you could then safe this as a midi file. When you reopened the *.mid RB would analyze the chords and enter them in the chord sheet.

Or play in the chords, open the chords window, and right click .. midi chord wizard.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
