Me, I'm still waiting for someone to show me a "Lead Guitar" hangin' on the music store rack.
I thought they was all pretty much just guitars - and I've known some cats who could play "Lead Rhythm Guitar"...
*grin*
--Mac
Back in 1978 I was involved with a Blues Band/Southern rock Band. Played a lot of Alman Brothers etc. Two drummers, Two guitars, Bass & singer. One of the guitar players was in the military and was leaving so we needed another. We auditioned this guy and he could play all the solos REAL well. Couldn't play a chord. He absolutely said he never learned. I'm a little bit in the same boat. Been playing electric bass for 46 years and can't play guitar.
Well John if you just learn to play the C and F chords (preferably the baree type) then you can play the 3 chord trick in any key on rhythm guitar. That’s only 2 chords to learn to whet your appetite

Hey Mac Your "lead guitar" point is well-taken - must be the equivalent of "the tire's only flat on the bottom". Ian

Gosh, Mac, you know that comment and your attempt at using colloquial dialect in the context of BiaB and this thread makes no sense and is unnecessarily sarcastic to say the least.
You know very well, that in this context, "rhythm guitar" means the sound produced by the strumming of chords (not the guitar itself ... gee whiz) and that "lead guitar" means the sound created by the playing of a combination of single notes."
Give it a rest.

in defense of Mac, I don't think he was trying to be sarcastic. I think he was just trying to point out that the epitome of fine guitar playing often involves the use of chordal melodies (and how would you catagorize that...? rhythm or lead, since it has elements of both? As he said, it's all just guitar.)
You don't hear the use of chordal melodies much in pop music, but in jazz it has always been "the way"
This is exactly why I was careful not to misrepresent what I do, because my playing is not in the same realm as a Johnny Smith or Hank Garland (both of whom were, IMHO, masters of the chordal melody)

I like doing collaborations as well. I have collaborated with a few people on this forum and it is fun to do. My instrument is Piano/Keyboard/Vocals etc . . . and I use a Yamaha Tyros synth for my midi sounds. Most people usually collaborate via e-mail or pm's here on this forum. I have seen other forums do their collaboration in their forum posts. Example; I am a guitarist looking for Drums, Bass, Sax or Piano etc . . then they post an MP3 with their part recorded with some basic bed tracks. They put the song info in the post as well, Tempo, Key and a request of which measures/bars they want for a lead etc . . . The drummer d/l's the file, records his/her part and uploads their MP3 for the next musician. Most people are usually looking for a certain part they would like in their song. When you start using 3 or 4 people in a collaboration, the process takes much longer due to commitments in our daily lives, not counting a "do over." But, if you want your song polished with a killer Sax lead etc, collaborations are the way to go, IMO. They are both fun and rewarding. I like to collaborate and open to assist any way I can here. If you don't like how my part(s) come out, use that "Erase Trax" button. Trax

You can get a decent guitar solo out of biab soloists... However, you have to be willing to comp them... What does this mean? It means you have to generate 10 to 12 solos in biab... Just create a biab file for the number of measures for your solo... Then generate 12 versions of this...
Now export the solo to a sequencer... Let's assume the solo is 8 measures and they start at track 1 of your sequencer (cut out the count in)... Insert 12 tracks into your sequencer... Now, cut and paste each of the 8 measures into a separate track... So, in the end you wind up with 12 tracks each with a new occurrence of the 8 measure solo that you had in the long track that biab exported.
Now mute all except the first one... See what you like of that... The mute first and listen to the second one and see what you like of that... And so on for each track... By taking out the parts of the solo you don't like in each of the tracks, that makes a new part of the solo, you'll wind up with a good solo... this goes a lot quicker in practice than in actually explaining it... Anyway, It may be hard the first couple fo times, but after a while, get a good solo out of any instrument will come easy..

Purely from a workflow point of view, you might find it easier to do many fewer than 12 variations, say 4 or so, or, if you are picky like me, do them 1 at a time. Play each solo through in BAIB and only export the individual solos or "sets" (depending on how you do it) that show promise using drag and drop to separate tracks in your sequencer. That way you avoid the high number of BAIB solos that would never be useful in any circumstances. You might be left with four or five tracks with elements you can then comp together, which is easier to manage than one linear set of 12 takes end to end on one track. In Sonar, the rest is easy, as you can just use the scissors tool (with "snap to" off) to cut the solos into phrases (or part phrases) and then the mute tool to mute those bits that you don't like. Once you have a full solo comprised of individudal phrases over the four or five tracks, you can render it to a single track and delete the dross. For 16 bars, this can take less than 5 minutes start to finish. You can also use V-Vocal (or Melodyne if you have it) to change individual notes, lengthen notes, shorten pauses etc. Piece of cake really...
Feel free to ignore all of the above.
Brian

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
