if you scan sheet music into BIAB, will you be able to see the melody notes if they are on the scanned sheet?

To my knowledge, BIAB cannot scan in a lead sheet. It can import audio (MP3, etc) files and interpret chords.

Cool. I didn't know such a program existed. I wish I knew about that a few years and hundreds of arrangements ago!

Smartscore has a 30 trial as does Notation musician, which can open the midi as a score and edit in many ways, then save as midi for further work in BIAB or RB.

The ability to scan sheet music into MIDI has been around for many years, but you may have to do some editing afterward. It's a lot like OCR for text; the better the source copy (clean, no wrinkles, no smudges or folds, not faded), the fewer the errors in the scan. And especially, make certain that the music is correctly aligned in the scanner.

Here is some info on the MIDI Edition of SmartScore. http://www.musitek.com/midiedition.html

Hi

I have used Notation musician for quite awhile,i find a Ragtime piano tune and load it into notation you can then find the chords which in ragtime is very easy and you can have from very simple to very complex chords what ever you prefer, you then mix the differnt tracks to make one track i then split it in to Melody and accoupliment i then make a midi file out of both the melody and accoup and export them to a file in BIAB and i end up with a melody track and chords, there again you can do all this in BIAB with abit more editing and you end up with the same results one thing i allways print a copy while in Notation
one thing go to Smartscore web site and see what scanners they recomend it does matter if you have a old scanner
i have a book of a hundred little kown ragtime tunes and i found that i can enter a melody line by hand as quick as useing smartscore and editting the results

regards Dave

I know this post is old, but I'm having a similar issue. I want to scan music into BIAB. What program would be good for that?

Through the years trying that with several software made me give it up .... it only works with simple lead sheet scores, and then still you'll have to fix a lot of errors.

You cannot scan printed sheet music directly into Band-in-a-Box. However, Keystroke notation entry and musicXML support are some recently added features in Band-in-a-Box that could help you..

What type of sheet music do you have and what are you trying to accomplish in the end? If what you have is a fakebook with chord symbols and melody for example, it is probably much easier for you to enter the songs directly into Band-in-a-Box using the chord sheet and notation window.

Chord entry typically takes no longer than a few minutes. For the melody, use the keystroke entry method: Open the notation window, toggle into editable notation mode. Use the left and right cursor keys to move back and forth, press the N key to insert a note at the current time, and set the pitch of the note using the up and down keys. You only need to worry about the position of each melody note, Band-in-a-Box takes care of adding rests, ties, and everything else.

Or, if you can scan your music using another program, you may be able to export as a musicXML file. You could then import the MusicXML file into Band-in-a-Box (File - Open Special..). How useful this will be depends on what end result you are looking for and what type of music you have.
