I am soory for the confusing subject line, but I dont find anything better. I am mixing some audio with PT, I want the best sound possible with as little interference from other programs as possible. I use my computer for music, writing, internet and everything else. ( I do not have the luxery og having one computer for music only) Now, What is the things to "look for" too ceep the sound quality high, and ewerything running as smooth as possible when I am mixing and rendering my tracks ?
Best regards Tono

If a track has a blank section (where no part is being played) and there is even a tiny bit of noise; cut it. This especially tru at the beginning and end. I can't tell you how many mixes have had to have the end reworked because there was so much noise as the last notes died out. http://musicmastering.org I suggest maybe looking at the mixing and premastering pages.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

If your computer is powerful enough to run PT with some VST's smoothly, you're good to go as you are. Just make sure you exit all programs and services you don't need. For example: you don't want a notification from your virus scanner saying the latest version is downloaded when you are busy recording or mixing.
As long as the computer runs the DAW with VST's with no problem, there's no need to uninstall programs or delete data from your harddisk.
What's more important for good quality recording of music is a good quality interface. An interface is a high quality soundcard. It can be external (USB, firewire) or internal as a PC-card. Standard soundcards are not designed to record music the way interfaces are.

rharv, thanks for the mastering link. At that site they recommend using windows media player>visualization>bars as a way of seeing the sonic spectrum of the wav file to see if it can be EQ'd better. Is there other, possibly free software that might give more info for seeing the wav info. Is there any of the EQ vst's that have this feature. Thanks again for the link, Wyndham

PGRTA is pretty much the same thing as WMP bars display, just with less frequencies. The idea is to know there are tools to help 'see' what doesn't 'sound' right. A lot of EQ's have this feature in various forms. (often called FFT) Some do it as bars on the bands, some as linear. I think Reaper EQ has this feature. http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/index.php Most mastering softwares have it so you can make adjustments and see the result in the same window. There used to be a few good spectrum analyzers out there for free, but they fell away with recent OS. Voxengo Span is one you may still find. Or Blue Cat Or Audition has a nice one Ozone4 has a very nice EQ interface for this still a of few choices out there

While looking through many threads on mixing, I ran accross this one on the reaper forum. It has more info on the reasons for why mixes sound terrible and how to learn how to fix it. This is not a casual read but worth th time. http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=29283it was posted several years ago but even though I have only read the first 3 pages, I've seen a different POV to sound. Hope some here enjoy, Wyndham
