Hi
I am trying to record my voice , but still not satisfied. Although I think I improved with my mixing(reverb…), I am still looking for something that could make my singing sounds more professional ; a tip, trick, secret (like for example , in restaurant , professionals might have some kind of secrets making the food tasty, or whatever).

My voice sounds (it s hard to explain) too close , like in a conversation. It s clear, but it lacks depth . I could make it more far, but then I lose the clearness.
I saw a advice to duplicate the track , and make with the pan ne in the middle , one left , one right. It could be a little bit better, but I am still not satisfied with the result.
When I hear professional stuff ( not necessarily super professional), and my stuff , I see the difference ; and I am wondering, maybe there is a tip/tips , maybe even simple tips , with the microphone , recording, mixing, that can make a difference
Thanks
Daniel

Decent mic, good preamp?

Have you tinkered with using the vocal categories for plugins? May learn a lot just playing around with the settings. (Right-click and select track category-vocal category then allow plugins to be inserted) Just something to try that is built into the programs already (RB and PT).
Do this on a copy of the existing song, of course, so you don't mess up what you already have.

Otherwise-
Four slots available on the track DX FX area, typical things to try here;
EQ the voice track, remove everything in the very bottom end to clean up. See what else helps with the character.
Put a de-esser on the track if needed SpitFish is a decent free one. Removes some sibilance and makes you not so 'right in your ear' sounding.
Put a compressor on the track, many professionally recorded vocals go thru a compressor.
Kjaerhaus Classic Compressor vocal presets are nice (and free). BlockFish (same company as spitfish) is another nice free one.

A little reverb, adjust to suit, depending on song. I like 'Ambience' because of the quality and ability to EQ the reverb right inside the module, and adjust damping on top and bottom. Nice plugin with a free version (nag screen) and not too expensive to license. They have worked with PGMusic in the past to make the plugin behave better in PT, so I have supported them since. There are TON of presets in this plugin, so it may take a while to find what you like, unless you know your way around a reverb unit.

**Note- just noticed Ambience free no longer has nag screen

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Daniel,

Some good direction from rharv above no doubt but maybe if you post an example of your recorded voice singing an actual tune we might be able to help even more. Again to rharv's point I for one can attest to the difference a good mic will make in one's vocals 1st hand.

Later,

Don't worry about getting it right. We just want to hear anything so we no were to start. Put together a song and then post it so we can download and listen. It's very difficult to listen to yourself singing and be objective. The first thing that needs to be established is can you sing. Not everyone can.

Over at JPF I answered by suggesting doubling your own vocal, i.e. singing it twice (if you can get it the same or close to the same). You'd be amazed at how many of the hits you've heard over the years have two or more layered vocal takes.

Also, consider the judicious use of chorusing. One or two chorused tracks buried under the main vocal can add substance.
