I was trying to log in to the NI forum today but their servers are under strain because they've just launched a five days only sale with 50% off their products. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone wanted to pick up a bargain (and you can access the site!)

Which product would be like Akoustik piano. Would Kontakt do the same kind of recording combined with the New York Concert Grand?

The full version of the NEW YORK CONCERT GRAND is listed at $39.50 USD. http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/powered-by-kontakt/new-york-concert-grand/

I just ordered Alicia Keys program from NI a few minutes ago. I was able to get in on their 50% sale. Their website is still busy with too many people but I got them on the phone.

Anyone need their number--323-467-2693

The man on the phone assured me that this program will work like Akoustik Piano so that I can record a piece using the program and produce a file with the piano synth on it. And have it work all in one program without needing another application.

From what I can tell, the closest thing to the old Akoustic Pianos would be this:

Thanks Dan, I saw that too but it seems to need the Kontakt player to use it. I will wait until my Alicia Keys programs comes from NI because I can't get anything from reading the website description of how it works. I have downloaded the free Kontakt player but it is difficult with out a piano set to install.

Great!! When you get it going, be sure and let us know how you like it. On the demos I've heard it has a sort of dark smooth sound that I'm pretty sure I would like. You can hear it on this vid as compared to Ivory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in7xZD_ToDc&feature=related

I listened to Ivory vs. Alicia Keys. Both sounded very nice, but quite a contrast in sound.

I'm still looking for a way to record and play back using Kontakt 4 once I get Alicia Keys. I don't have enough knowledge about these components since Akoustik Piano had the recording, playback, save, and save to wave capability.

What do you know about Reaper?

Hi Joan,

I tried Reaper a couple of years ago and liked it so much that I bought a license and I use it all the time. However, it is a powerful program and requires a lot of study to get the most out of it. The nice thing about it is that the demo is fully functional in every way so you can try it free. The thing is, you don't really need it unless you just want the added features it provides. (I'm assuming you have RealBand or Cakewalk or some other daw already.)

Quote/I'm still looking for a way to record and play back../endGuote

If you still have Akoustik Piano, you can use it to learn how to record and play back using your daw. In other words, don't use the built in capabilities-just pretend it doesn't have them. Or for that matter, use biab and using help, set it up so that you can record a bass sound or piano sound as midi or audio, using whatever synth you already have assigned there. Once you learn how to do it, it's the same for every thing (except for finding the action you want in the different menus lol)

If you haven't downloaded the free library for Kontakt yet, it's well worth downloading. Another free player and free lab that is well worth downloading is SampleTank. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/sampletank/download/ If you do download ST and need help with it, I might be able to help as I use it more than any other synth I have.
Hope this helps and feel free to pm me if you want. I'll try to help but I'm not very good at explaining things. lol

Later,
Jim

Thanks Jim, you are excellent at explaining things. I was finally able to reinstall my Akoustik Piano on my new HP laptop and that will help in giving me a recording device.
I will download the free library for Kontakt and see what develops with that. I will also see about getting Sample Tank. There seems to be a more difficult time with registering to get the free download for that one. I'll try again later.

I was hoping you'd say that. You're all set, then. Your recordings made that way in your previous rig were good, and they will be the same now. As Jim suggests you could easily learn how to record through a sequencer, too, and get more flexibility, since one standard technique is applicable to all VST instruments including Akoustik Piano.

The "new" Ni pianos offer very little extra function beyond their original Akoustik Piano form. If the money means anything to you, it's just as well not to buy the new ones. You can if you like open your Akoustik patches in Kontakt directly, bypassing the Akoustik Piano interface. Saving the patches (with samples) in the new compressed form offered by Kontakt 4 makes them load in a second that way. But Akoustik Piano never took long to load anyway, so it's no huge advantage.

Anyway, nice going! You have it made, with some pleasant experiments still to be enjoyed, if you feel like branching out in techniques.

Yes, I'm relieved to have success after going through about 3 reinstalls (3 hours each) of Akoustik and many attempts at getting their Service Center to activate. The secret for me was finally to highlight my key as if I was going to edit it, then press enter again. That triggered it to recognize my system. The problems with that install got me looking for other methods and I will enjoy learning about Kontakt, Reaper, and Alicia's Keys along with my Sonic Implants (Grand Pianos) that I have.

Alicia arrived but I need a refresher course in standalone usage since I can't get it entered as an instrument in Reaper yet.

Do I use a midi cable or some other cable between Roland FP-4 and laptop?
