HI all

Quick question for BIB.

Is it possible to change styles in the middle of a song?

I wanted to change from a funk style to a swing walking bass.

I tried defining a C/D style as the one I wanted to switch to. The drum changed but the bass stayed the same as the original pattern.

Is this supposed to work? Or am I trying to something not supported?

Thanks

Jeff

Nevermind that stuff about styles, you got a 40 inch monitor and a water cooled CPU. Wow!!

OK Jeff, to answer your question. I think the answer is yes, have you tried to do it wiht the Bar Settings "F5". Just select the bar you want the style to change at and hit "F5". then you can select and alternate style. You would have to also specify which chorus you want each style to play over. All done in F5. Let us know how it works for you.

Only problem I think you may have is if you want the RT instruments to change with the sytle change. this is not possible, but you can select which ones at playing over the each style (all in F5). Otherwise you would have to go to RB for more options and flexibilty in arrangement.

Right, at this time it is not possible to change RealTrack instruments in the middle of a song. You could, however, put the same instrument on two tracks and use different styles with each, and mute one or the other using F5 where you wish. I think that's one of the suggestions jazzmandan was describing.

Since you mention C/D, you probably mean MIDI styles and yes, those can change within a song, but you will only hear a difference if the style was programmed to give one. Many styles only feature A and B substyles. The use of C and D or more depends on what that style was programmed to sound like. You can also modify MIDI styles and save copies under a different name, if you like.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried changing the style ( I am using realtracks and real drums ) with F5, but I got the warning that this is not supported and the style change will be ignored. Would be a cool feature for a future version tho :-).

This is possible with RealBand tho correct? I will give it a try. I am assuming I can define the different styles and bass tracks on different channels and generate specific measures?

Future versions are usually things that happen in December. But not always. I'd save up a buck or two, don't blow it all on a huge bottle of pure-fumes and invisible clothing, (lingerie), and stash some cash ...you never know. I'm just suggesting based on past empirical data....

Instead of trying to cajole her to wear the gear and splash the squash, you can woo her with style changes maybe, or at least new styles.

If that doesn't work buy a new brain bucket for hockey. Those hits to the head....what waz I sayin?

LOL - sounds like great advice.

So I got it to work in RealBand.

Here is a link to the track. You can hear the transition to the jazz drums and bass in the middle.

It's not how big your monitor is, it's how you use it!

Hi Jeff,

That is a cool cat groove. I'm "new" to the BB/RB world. I ordered the Everything Pak 6 months ago and over the Holiday, had a chance to jump in a bit and try some things out with BB specifically.

Your post addressed one of my main issues as well. After digging a bit, it does in fact seem that inserting a style change mid song (when real tracks are used) does not work as one would like it to...apparently, the only real track that can change currently are the real drums...BUT, like other posters here suggested, there is a work around that unfortunately uses up an additional track and one has to mute the other during the change...and flop back again. Not that cool in my book...but plausible.

So, as you have stated, you have achieved the desired effect with RB...which is encouraging for me! I haven't even started to delve into RB yet.

I'm not sure how much of BB is the same within RB (meaning can I construct the basic frame in the same manner?) and then really get to customizing it by adding more tracks with definable styles and instruments at will...I hope so...as that would be true freedom of expression.

I noticed to that you also have a Motif XS (like me!) You play much better than I of course...it is good to know a fellow Motif man on the scene here. I absolutely adore that machine...one of the better investments...should probably take me to the end of my days here on earth.

BTW, in regards to the Motif, have you ever delved into making a custom patch map for the thing for playing BB/RB's MIDI stuff? I started down the road called "just getting it to work" and I used a patch map someone else created for a similar Yamaha product (the ES I think...previous generation)...just to get me going to check the response...it worked, but of course the patches are not what they appear. Just curious.

If there is anyone out there that has a patch map for the XS, I would be greatful for sure...no doubt that would take a tremendous amount of time. Maybe the guys at Motifator.com could do it as a support thing for users?

Anywho-I'll start delving into the RB manual and get educated a bit...meanwhile search here and scour the FAQ's and videos.

Great job with the song, I'd like to hear more...

Oh, again by the way, WHAT IS that chord you're using at the last turn around for the Em, Am, Em, Am, C,...and then B what? Can't figure the extension...B7#9 maybe? IE, 1,3,b7,#9 voicing?

Thanks again...if you have any tips, I'm all wet behing the ears.

Regards,
Eric

It's an E7#9, and the song is in Am.

The changes are Am, Dm etc, F, E7#9. The F could be played as FMaj7.

Hi Flan

Yes the Motif is a great machine. I play in a christian rock band on Sunday mornings and evenings. I use the Motif hammond about 50% of the time. I bought a custom library called Organimation from ksounds that I like a lot. Better than the stock hammond patches I think. It is one of the Organimation patches I used on this recording.

Matt has the progression correct - standard minor blues. Except when I go to the jazz feel I switch to Am9, Dm9 and Fmaj9 which makes it sound a little jazzier - especially if you use closed voicings. And for the E7#9 to get that blues sound - voice it this way on the keyboard:

( left hand ) E and B ( right hand ) G# D E G

I am thinking about getting back into a blues / classic rock band, because that is where my heart is. Might be a challenge juggling 2 bands but we'll see. BIB and Realband have been great practice tools to get back into the blues thing. I was so I happy I got the style change thing working in RealBand I decided to record it. Hoping by practicing this way I will be better prepared when I go on auditions.

I have also started a youtube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/user/jeffsmusicchannel

I will be putting my original compositions there. Most of which will include RealTracks in some form or other.

I am pretty new to the whole recording thing so the quality will get better over time.

But I will say the BIB and RealBand are awesome. Keep it up PGMusic. I am already saving for the 2011 version :-).
